World of Warcraft Class Talent System

World of Warcraft Class Talent System

World of Warcraft Game Director Tom Chilton, and Lead Systems Designer Greg Street took to the stage this morning to discuss the direction of class balance for World of Warcraft, as well as the new talent system coming in Mists of Pandaria. Their panel focused on the philosophies and goals of this new system, what’s changing, and what expectations players should have as they level up in Pandaria and beyond.

Philosophies and Goals

In Cataclysm, we made some pretty radical adjustments to the talent trees. Some of those changes worked out really well, while others didn't really help us achieve the goals we set out to reach. We really liked offering players a choice of class specialization at level 10, for example, and how streamlining each of the talent trees made room for meaningful choices and greater character customization. We didn't like that there was still a lot of "bulk" left in the talent trees despite our clean-up efforts, though, and that it remained possible for players to "miss" really important performance talents. Looking back, we feel that the Cataclysm talent trees are roughly 80% composed of class role-defining talents that are crucial to rotations and performance, while the other 20% are interesting utility talents, and that's where the real choices were happening.

For Mists of Pandaria, we want to move toward something that feels more flexible, yet eliminates many of the flaws of the old system at the same time. More importantly, we want players to gain access to important class performance abilities easily while ensuring that the more engaging utility abilities, where all the choices a player makes are meaningful, are front and center. Getting there will take some major changes.

The New Class Talent System

Perhaps the most exciting of these changes is the removal of the old talent tree system. Rather than each class having three separate trees, one for each specialization, players will now choose talents from individual sets which are awarded every 15 levels. Each class will have its own selection of talents, and the entire list will be available to all characters of that class regardless of  specialization.

Each talent set is comprised of three talents which fall into a clear "theme." Some sets will offer utility such as movement speed increases and boosts to survivability, while others will reduce the costs of certain situational abilities. Currently, the goal is to avoid making any particular talent mandatory or to have them play a role in ability rotations directly. Instead, they're intended to give players interesting ways to customize their characters according to their preferred playstyle.

In total, there will be six talent sets, with players unlocking a new set every 15 levels. This means that there will be fewer talents overall, but each talent you choose has the potential to have a much more dramatic effect on your gameplay.

Examples of possible talents for paladins in Mists of Pandaria

Another big change being made is how talents are selected. Instead of "purchasing" talents with a predetermined number of points (earned as you level), talent selection will be toggle-based. For each set of three talents players unlock, they will get to choose one talent to activate, for a total of six active talents at level 90. (Talent ranks have been completely removed.)

Similar to current functionality, talents selections will be finalized by clicking "Learn" at the bottom of the talent pane; however, a big benefit of removing talent points is that it allows us to let players "re-talent" with more flexibility. Even after players have activated their talents, they won't be completely locked into their choices as they are now. If at any point a player feels that another talent may be more appropriate or fun, he or she can simply select that talent from their tree and click "Learn" again. This can be done on a talent-by-talent basis or, if the situation demands it, all talents can be changed out at once.

As a result, talents can be changed out when switching specs, as well as when running dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds. While re-talenting will most likely be disabled during combat and will incur a small fee (either in the form of gold or a reagent), it will still give players more opportunities to adapt their characters to better meet the challenges they expect to face while playing.

Class Talents vs. Specialization Abilities

So what does this mean for important spec-based spells and abilities like Hammer of the Righteous and Circle of Healing?

At level 10, players will still select a specialization and unlock an iconic class specialization ability. As players level up, they will then automatically learn both class-based and specialization-specific abilities at set intervals. The specialization abilities you learn will be largely comprised of old talents we feel players should have, as well as core class abilities that not every spec needs.

For example, for a level 25 Protection paladin, his or her training list may look a little something like this:

Level 10: Avenger's Shield (Protection ability)
Judgments of the Wise (Protection ability)
Level 12: Rightous Fury (Class ability)
Level 13: Redemption (Class ability)
Level 14: Flash of Light (Class ability)
Level 15: Hand of Reckoning (Class ability)
Level 16: Lay on Hands (Class ability)
Level 18: Divine Shield (Class ability)
Level 20: Hammer of the Righteous (Protection ability)
Level 22: Supplication (Class ability)
Level 24: Consecration (Class ability)

These spells and abilities will be trained in the field, appearing immediately in players' spellbooks once they reach the appropriate level. As a result, there will no longer be a need to visit class trainers save to re-spec or purchase Dual Specialization, keeping players engaged and doing what they enjoy.

With this new method of distributing abilities, we can ensure that players are receiving role-defining talents at levels that make sense and will benefit them the most as well as deliver fun and meaningful choices along the way.

Be sure to visit or tune in to the World of Warcraft Classes/Items/Professions Q&A tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. PDT in Hall D of the Anaheim Convention Center to learn more about the direction we’re taking with class balance in Mists of Pandaria.

I have been reading most of these posts and would have to agree with 90% of the people voicing there opinions on this whole matter.. The only thing WoW has going for it, is that no one has been able to best the game thus far, and no one can srgue that. But they are not killing the game, they have already killed the game. People flock to WoW for the MMO experince, that has long been gone from that game. The raiding has become mundane, and the new talent system isnt even a system. Its a no brainer. There are no tough choices taht make/break your play style and make you successfull or a failure.. I to miss the Vanilla days. The only thing there is to do is completely stop playing WoW and to be honest I do not see that happening until something comes along that can hold our ' true gamers' attention longer then a week.. Blizzard has been listening to the complaints of the core raiders, and have yet to make any changes.. All of the points everyone has made will go unto closed ears for they simply do not care. Everyone bitc*** but still play. You take away there money, you get there attention

This has motivated me to post, really poor Blizz, I am seriously considering cancelling my account this time. Sick of these inane poorly thought out changes. The philosophies and goals stated above to me do not justify your blatant lack of consideration for the time spent by long time loyal players and PAYING CUSTOMERS in setting up their toons, the in game costs and other preferences, now removed at your whim. Spend 5 minutes calculating what your company earns from WoW account holders annually and your arrogance and lack of consideration towards the majority astounds me. I have been a Guild leader for 3 years of a Guild that has been running for over 5 years and I am honestly feeling "over it" right at this moment.

@Shanarda: agreed, i may not be the best player or even a good raider but the fact that everything that i have learned over the years has to be forgotten in order to be able to play my toons.... The new talent system is an abomination, all my classes that I once loved now disgust me.

this talent system is a big mess. i like the spell and skills that we use now but there is no point to have specs now with this system. no unqiue improve to any class now hunter was Beast Mastery and Survial now both class are almost the same this talent system was.... no word to describe how bad it is and how mad i feel. i am calling gamestop and removing my preorder. my time is up on 9/10 and i am gladly i did not buy more time. change the system back or have each spec have different talent selection.

Looks like wow has decided to eliminate the individuality of characters, and vanilla out the game. Other games have died on the vine do to the same error. people play the game so they can say, hey my character can .... you eliminate that when you say every warrior is a warrior is a warrior... no individuality means loss of players, loss of players means death of game.

I am not a huge fan of the new talent system, I feel it is a major step in the wrong direction. I have been playing off and on since vanilla and feel that if you created a few "OG" servers, everyone would be happy. Every server now will instantly become a LVL 90 MoP server once it drops, give the HC gamers a few vanilla, BC and Wrath servers. I know I am not the only one that would LOVE a BC server with the old school talent system and a level cap of 70.

I mean, you can play D2 without LoD, why not play WoW without MoP?

I'm getting real tried of people going on about Blizzard doing this and Blizzard doing that. Blizzard no longer exist, it was bought out by Activision before Cata was released (thats when it started going dumb) & with the layoff of the game designers a few months back the release of Mist of Pandaria is pure Activision. Activision has always been known for simple, idiot games for simple, idiot people.. Soon WoW will be filled with simple idiot people playing a simple idiot game. People who like to think & prefer a challenge will have to find their gaming fun somewhere else.

Any suggestions?

I'm not a huge player. Not even really casual. I mostly just hop on and chat with friends, but even with that in mind Mists of Pandaria looks exciting. But the talent trees.. Blizzard :/ Things were so much simpler when it was a talent a level and the trees were 40pts long. Things worked really well! And even with the talents at every other level it's going alright. But once every 15 levels? Why? You can't solve an issue by grossely changing it!

Come on Blizzard, even the young players (like me) don't have any trouble understanding the talent trees. What are you talking about "bulk", I rather prefer it as it is. I've been a loyal player for 4 years, but those years are coming to an end due to this new talent tree.

You guys act like WoTLK was a good xpack, BC was better if not the best xpantion WoW ever head, sure WoTLK was good in the beginning but quickly went bad after Ulduar patch making cata not even have a chance at being anywhere decent. And you're right, this game has been taken away from hardcore gamers and given to casuals. I used to be hardcore and now im casual since i dont have the time for it anymore but thats what pvp and 10 mans were for, Casuals, 25 mans were for hardcore people thats what BC was, they need to bring it back so that both sides get their way.

Elfninja hit the nail on the head, blizzard doesnt have to cater have to children the making of mop being harder is what should be happening not easier, there only one more expansion suppose to be left and i promise you they will change this, but at note i do like the diversity of the trees the being able to not have to go all the way down one tree to go to the others rather then any, but it was best LK go back to that talents general set up for real. ever since blizzard got bought by activision they have only cared about the numbers honestly make the game harder and get some of these kids that that doesnt understand the game off here, the people on my server are ridicously stupid sometimes, that would make the game better overall.

`what you guys arent understanding is that blizzard need to make sure the "children who play wow" dont go crying to their parents to cancel subscription. Did you here the star wars game The Old Republic is going free to play in september. TOR used to be 15 / month too. World of wowcraft would be such a better game if they didnt have to cater to children but as long as mommy and daddy are paying subscription they have really no choice. Its just like any other job, if sales go down, bosses directly blame the game developers, "ITS Their fault the game isn't easy enough for 12 y/o tommy to play his pally". Bosses will never look at the money factor, people can hardly pay for their houses, they are so desperate they are stealing "man hole Covers". (heard that on the news today) pretty sad blizzard thinks of only $$ but that's a corporation for you

Looking at this, I must agree with Satanix on the dumbing down and catering to the crybaby players that eventually get things their way. I am currently playing the beta of MoP, and I'm none to pleased with the change in glyphs, nor has the new talent system made me a fan of it. Pet battles and farming, while fun, purely smack of catering to the children and facebook community of WoW (pokemon and farmville, respectively). The game world of Pandaria is beautiful, and it's nice to play through, but it makes me wonder what the future for WoW truly is when Blizzard seems to be fixing things that are not broken.
