Diablo III™

Key Features

  • Combine Gems

Covetous Shen’s tools and mastery of gemcraft allow him to combine lower quality gems together to produce superior results.
  • Add Sockets

Shen can etch a socket into shields, helms, belts, or pants, enabling nearly any piece of equipment to reap the benefits of gems.
  • Remove Gems

For a gold cost, he can also extract gems from equipment sockets so that they can be re-used.
"I'm a simple man. Give me a good meal, a warm bed and a handful of jewels."

The strangely-titled Covetous Shen has gone by many names throughout his history, but none have seemed to fit quite so well as the one he’s using now. Shen originally hails from the diamond isles of Xiansai, but his wanderlust has taken him far from home.

Covetous Shen is carefree by nature, giving every appearance of being a man without ambition, and trusting in fate to guide him to where he needs to be. Shen’s lax attitude only changes when jewels are involved. His greed for glittering precious stones is legendary; he may even love them more than he loves his own life.

When Shen joins you, he is searching for a particularly rare gem, one he suspects you may have an eventual hand in finding. Until his own quest is at an end, he will use his transcendent talent for jewelcrafting in your service, helping to cut and shape the gems that will elevate your weapons and armor to new heights of foe-destroying potential.

Workshop Progression

As you dedicate gold and materials to training your artisans, they’ll upgrade their scant tables and carts into more complete workshops, unlocking new recipes in the process.

@Khione: Both, though if you focus on one you will max it earlier as they both cost a lot of gold.

I'm confused here. Never played Diablo before but I am getting it and I'm wondering, do these Artisans and Followers just come with you on your journey or something, or do they have their own places?

@Balanidin: Im not 100% sure how d3 will be but in d2, you had to buy your followers and there were no artisans but followers didnt have their own special place, the just follow you and kill

@Balanidin: When you play solo, you can pick one of 3 followers to keep you company and fight along side of your hero. They can be equipped with gear, but have far less gear slots. Followers have unique dialog with your hero to spice up the journey.

Artisans on the other hand, are just in town. You pay to level them up to take advantage of their abilities to craft gems, armors, and weapons. Enjoy!

@Balanidin: Leveling of the Artesian's is also shared between your characters. So you only need level them once!!

I would like to see this expanded on, after looking at the different effects on the gems the variety seems to be very slim. Unless they are only showing us only a small number of the gem types, then there are only really 4 different gems that get more powerful effects as you combine them. They also are only showing the effects the gems have if they are placed in a helm or in your weapon, even though it says that any piece can be fitted with slots. I think if they expanded this system it would give players a greater opportunity to differentiate between each other and make something that was more focused on a certain play style or character build. Like I said, I might be missing something like an option to combine gems of different colors for different effects (which is quite possible) or maybe gems changing effects when placed in different armor slots (unlikely). Regardless of the gem system I can't wait for this game. Feel free to add a reply if i am missing something here.

There should be more kinds of gems than what I saw... What happened to the Skulls and other fancy gems from D2?
