I was going to dismiss this as kind of novelty since BK only does (from what I've read) 0.5% of a mob's remaining health per second. Either mob health is low and your own damage is way better than that and it's irrelevant, or mob health is so so high that this does result in large numbers on screen, but it's likely that your own damage won't be enough to survive the encounter anyway. I'd have said good CC had more utility than that.
However, if it really is increased by %elite and %physical and other buffs, then it actually becomes pretty respectable. Nice! :)
Unity is not intended and will be fixed. I don't have a citation for this beyond common sense however. Why is this common sense? Because no other ring, regardless of roll, provides anything even close to a 50% passive damage reduction, least of all without giving up any stats on the ring itself. Using it WITHOUT the immortality token makes sense as you will take damage from the follower or kill the follower when you take damage, using it WITH that token is gamebreaking.
The likely fix will involve having that token disable the legendary property of unity or by disabling the property on followers entirely. Other options include change the damage calculation so that a follower taking damage still hurts you as it would without the token equipped.
I would like to see blue address this. Normally I would not have even brought up a useful bug because I fear it being fixed, but the OP took care of that already so now it's time to get it out in the open.

edit: heck, last week's Play Your Way build uses the trick and it's been showcased by Bliz: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/14833864/deadsets-leapquake-crusader-7-17-2014 (scroll down to "The Items")

Great write up, thanks for putting all of this together.
I did about 10 minutes of testing with my Enchantress using Overwhelming Desire in T6. I didn't see it proc during that time. I changed her Charm ability to Forceful Push and don't have any other charms as a Barbarian. (Wasn't using SoR at the time.)
Can anyone confirm this actually works on her? I currently have her using the Tormentor and its pretty awesome, another chance at charm would be great.
I'm using Ess of Johan which is great for Might of the Earth set, but it has a very small proc chance as well. Perhaps I was just unlucky in my test?
I am a monk and have the Asheara's set bonus. I have the follower immortality legendary on the Templar and the Scoundrel. I do not have that legendary for the Enchantress as of yet. I have a unity ring on myself and all 3 followers. I only group with my cousin, a barbarian. And I only play when I can group with him because I am otherwise using my Witch Doctor to solo. I have died repeatedly to the Enchantress. I am grouped. This means that I am in a multiplayer mode. The unity ring works to kill me. So, I imagine it works all the time in multiplayer. I would like more information on how you tested the unity rings and concluded that the Asheara followers do not abide by the unity rings' rules. I am almost positive you are wrong given my experience. I have removed the unity ring from the Enchantress and she has not killed me since I did that. Before that she killed me at least a dozen times.
Since i wanted the main guide to be informative, i did not share all my testing procedure in it. So detailed how-to test were scattered among other topics, some of them in EU forum.
I'm always happy to talk about those, because i like to share other player experience and remarks. Also i think test procedures can always be upgraded. I'm quite glad you brought up that issue on the Ashera's 4 Unitys combo, let's call it A4U.
First of all, i lack details on your experience. Do you play with your cousin in a 2 formation or do both of you join a 4 member team ? Does your cousin or any other player wore Unity(s) at the time ? Did you see the Dhalgren was killed by Enchantress message ? Any screenshots ? Was there any reflect damage involved ?
There's something quite odd here : even if a follower have an immortality token, you still take damage. So if the A4U were to be effective, you could have die from any of them, the Enchantress would still take the same damage than the others... Yet you die from the same follower again and again ? That would be possible in solo mode, if A4U was effective, and if your enchantress had tons of HP, enough to be a fatal blow.
My test procedure on this matter (to know if damage mitigation was effective with an A4U), is really easy to reproduce, and i invite you to try.
I talked about it, there :
To me the result is quite clear, for the same flat damage dealer, No follower = No main follower, sumoned Unity followers. In multiplayer, with no other Unity on the other team members, results were the same.
I will try to reproduce the "was kill by Enchantress" message with the same A4U as you, 2 immortality tokens and one all skill token on the enchantress. I'll give her massive HP and low-resistance to make her die often, wishing her to romanticaly take me in her death.
Then i will update this post... Still i'm quite skeptical.

Thanks for the fast reply. No, it is just He and I goofing around and lamenting our terrible message. It was a message about what killed me and it was saying, "Dhalgren killed by enchantress" a bunch of times. It could have been the affix buff on the elites of reflect damage, because I did not pay attention to that. I understand your point about not having a follower while grouped, but they do show up. My cousin does not use a unity ring. It is just me with him, and we never group with others. Trust me, our poor damage would just get us kicked! :P
Since I removed her unity ring I have not gotten the message that she has killed me ever again, but who knows. I just wanted to introduce you to some weird evidence that seems to imply that the unity on the followers while in a multiplayer setting does work. Maybe it does not. Just my experience.
Why http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/band-of-hollow-whispers with 7% AS, not http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/oculus-ring with 16% AS or http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/unity with the +% elite damage?
Why need use Furnace exactly with this ring?
How haunts worked with Furnace?
Both alternatives you suggest are valid. In fact i often switch Unity and Whispers according to context.
But let's dig a little on this matter.
Take in consideration that bonus are not additive, and that Fumace is a very slow weapon. Each choice will have its pros and cons, and the templates shown in this guide are not stone engraved, many variations are possible.
I like band of Hollow whispers because it will give extra attacks and can be enhanced with %arcane bonus on SoJ and amy.
(Note that i am unsure if Elite bonus apply on Whispers)
Unity will stack elite Bonus, so it will be effective at beginning, as the Elite HP are still high and then will be less and less effective as the HP go down. Hollow will deal flat damage regardless of the fight duration. I will favor band of Hollow whispers if there's %arcane bonus on Enchantress's SoJ and amy. But this is really a matter of taste.
For the 16% AS oculus, as i've stated,
I still don't know if this is intended or a bug. I did create a topic in general, hoping for a blue response. I did not get one, however the topic was moved in bug report section, that can be a clue... or not.
So if you have extra gold and gems you can go for the 16% AS Oculus ring, however i'm unsure if this will be corrected or not.
Still i've updated the fumace template with the Unity alternative, thanks for your remarks.
Just wanted to chime in and thank you for this brilliant resource Ash Tag.
2 observations. It's a real shame Windforce on Scoundrel and Strongarms on self doesn't work, and also I always use a legacy Puzzle Ring on my followers for goblins every 15 minutes.
I've yet to establish whether on PTR these goblins can open the Geed treasure realm yet, but will report back if I get lucky!
If by "work" you meant stack, yes it does work. CDR stack on followers the same way it does on a player's chars (i.e non-additive).
