So you found this silly Mask at the back of the voodoo shack and are wondering how does it actually work?

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/the-grin-reaper

The Grin Reaper is an extremely fun and capable WD mask, properly built TGR can put TIki wielders to shame with Crowd Control or leave Pet builds in the dust with a Creeping Doom of dogs, fetishes, 15 Spider Queens and 8 Lob Blobs :D.

Q: How much damage do the mimics do?

They do *almost* 100% of the WD damage.

This includes buffs (PtV, BBV, GF) and debuffs (MC, Piranhas), +% elite, +% elemental.
One exception: +% skill does not transfer to the mimics (so don't bother with the likes of +% Spiders)

Damage is calculated based on minimum weapon damage number.

For example:
A Knife+Mojo combo has a damage range of 1556-2248
The mimics will always use 1556.

WD average weapon damage: (1556-2249)/2 = 1902
Mimics weapon damage: 1556

In this case, the mimics do on average about 82% of the WD damage.

To maximize mimics damage - look for high minimum damage on both weapon and mojo.

Q: What's the deal with DoTs?

The Grin Reaper Mimics do not have any of the hard caps on the WD dot's. This means you can have as many Spider Queens, Lob Blobs, Pyrogists, and Phantasm as the Mimics can cast.

Exception: each mimic will only have one Manitou and it will go away when the mimic goes away.

Haunt: The Mimics will cast haunt once on a single target, the DoT seems to go away when the Mimic goes away.

Q: Do the Mimics benefit from Attack Speed?

Reported by Myrec

Mimics attack speed is determined by your weapon attack speed. They don't benefit from attack speed bonus from gear.

Q: Can the mimics cast any attack?

They will not cast any of the following attacks -

Zombie Dogs
Fetish Army
Garg
Zombie Wall
Hex
Big Bad Voodoo
Locust Swarm
Firebats *

Q: How are the mimics summoned, what is the best way to have them always up?

Mimics have a chance to be summoned per cast, this means the Fire Bats are the best, Rain of Toads is second best and everything else is pretty much the same. More attack speed helps!

Yes, you have to attack to summon.

Q: Can the Mimics Proc Crowd Control?

Yes, they can proc CC from the following attacks -

Mass Confusion
Snake on the Face (perma stun a rift guardian)
Addling Toads
Horrify
Phlebotomize

Q: Can they proc debuffs?

They can proc damage debuff from the following attacks, multiple casts will stack -

Mass Confusion
Piranhas

Note: that means you can have three MC and three Piranhas stacked at the same time for a nice big multiplier.

Q: Can they proc buffs?

No, They can cast Horrify and Soul Harvest but the WD will not get the Armor or Intel boost. They will also not buff mana regen or life per second.

Q: Can they proc effects from weapon and items?

In general no. The only item that seems to work with them is Frostburn gloves, the mimics can proc the freeze effect using cold attacks or using a cold weapon with any attack (i.e Rain of Toads).

Cinkrement confirmed that the following do not proc:
strongarm braces, deadly rebirth, spider queens grasp, haunt of vaxo, goldskin

Q: Do passives transfer to the Mimics?

No, Passives such as Vision Quest, FS, Creeping Death and Bad Medicine do not transfer to the Mimics.

Q: What's the deal with Fire Bats?

Mimics seem to be able to cast Fire Bats but they will not deal any damage. Maybe a bug?

Q: Do mimics benefit from Big Bad Voodoo?

Only Slam Dance will boost them, they will actually get boosted twice if summoned after BBV is out for a total of 30%+30%=60% damage boost (as long as the WD stays in the BBV ring). They don't seem to benefit from the attack speed boost.

Q: Are mimics considered pets?

Yes, mimics are considered temporary pets and benefit from pets buff items such as Enforcer, Zuni 6p and TNT gloves.

It's sad isn't it? I tried playing around with Cloud of Bats, it was pretty cool to have 3 of them going about 10-15 yards from each other, but the mimics weren't doing any damage.

Reminds me of the Quintessons....WD should have a mask like that!

yeah, would be awesome if fire bats worked.

I also wish that the spider queens and blobs would teleport to you like the rest of the pets, would make it much more viable.

Been playing with this mask forever (mostly because I haven't found MoJ)... having 3 piranha-nados going with 3 rain of toads is pretty awesome for wiping out a huge bunch of mobs quickly.

I don't think they get benefit from +speed, when they cast spirit barrage it seems pretty slow. same for when I have slam dance fetish up.

Didn't know the debuff stacked however... that is awesome.

From what I've seen, the mimics proc at least some item effects. Mine proc fire walkers and I've seen others proc things like the Manajuma set cloud.

I can confirm this that the visuals of the molten trail and cloud are there. But not sure about if it is doing any damage.

This is probably because mimics mimic your character's display upon creation, aka they look the same as you at the moment when they're summoned. So if you have cloud, or molten trail, they should have it too visually. HOWEVER, they don't do damage with it. It is all visual. (Though need confirmation)

This is also applied to Firebats. The mimics DO NOT CAST firebat. (Easily tested if you have firebats on your bar, and you summon the mimics through another method. They will never ever use firebats)
The reason people are seeing them casting firebats, is again, the same thing with above, they mimic how you look like at the point of summon. Since you proc summon them via Firebats (And which is channeled), they will be summoned as if they are channeling Firebats, too. Thus, you only see the visual aspect of them "casting" firebats, but do no damage.

Really sweet post with great information about a nice build a lot of Witch Doctors may not be aware of. I found a Grin Reaper while leveling, and completely underestimated it's potential. I'll be hanging on to it if I find another one after seeing this. Great work!

Excellent write up and great thread. I sincerely hope this thread stays positive and follows a discussion about the build.

It seems like a neat ability, but sadly, this helm will only be used as a stepping stone to bigger and better builds, as pet builds use MoJ and DoT/Jade builds use Quetz.

Awesome, loved the video and write up. It may not be as powerful as other builds, but its great to see another T6 capable build using an interesting affix on a piece of gear.

I've used this helm in conjunction with the deadly rebirth legendary knife. The build idea came from a thread a while back, can't remember who posted, but it was a fun alternate build when you get bored of pets/jade with lots of cc.

Basically you run piranhado and grasp of the dead groping eels, along with the 2 aforementioned items. It's fun because you have so much cc thrown down between you and your mimics casts, monsters are locked down easy. The rest of the build then you can play with, maybe throwing some pets and a nuke in there for extra damage.

Why on earth do you have VIsion Quest?
I've tried the build, it's really not that good IMHO, the mimics are too random, don't last long enough.

A couple of additional points about the Grin Reaper.

The Mimics will cast Soul Harvest, you can see the targeting circle on the floor. Like you said, the Mimic's SH wouldn't give you the Int buff, nor will it give you life or mana if you have those runed. It will do damage from the weapon damage rune, but on the whole the mask doesn't work well with SH.

The Mimics can't be killed, but they can be targeted by enemies. So they are additional distractions for mobs.

At some point, you will see a skeleton standing next to you and you will try to kill your own Mimic. It'll probably happen more than once :)

Do the debuffs from piranhado cast by mimics work/stack with my own piranhado (& strongarms)?

If I'm using jade set, do their SH harvest the DoTs too?

- a Jade WD w/o quetz

I'm a new WD and found this Mask rather quickly (found 2 in a day actually)!

Put it on not knowing what it does as I couldn't find "Horrific Mimic" in any skill.

Suddenly, I'm seeing 2 pools of piranhas when I didn't even cast it.. and I realise they work like Wiz's Mirror Images... but even better!

Right now I'm in abit of a fix - my gear are mostly +cold%, cos I tot of using Haunt, Spirit Barrage as my mains (aiming for Jade Harvester set). Not sure if I should change some to poison%, or continue stacking cold%...

I just found one of these in the last hour! Really made a difference in my damage output and puts me about one good piece away from starting Torment for the first time :)
