Diablo® III

Upcoming Change - Preparation (Punishment)

Community Manager
With Patch 2.1 around the corner, many classes are receiving some substantial revisions to core functionalities. These changes have equally substantial philosophy behind them, so we want to prepare you in advance for the kinds of adjustments you should expect.

Preparation (Punishment) was creating less than ideal gameplay by encouraging the conversion of Discipline to direct DPS. The byproduct of this was Demon Hunters frequently finding themselves without their defensive or utility skills, often resulting in more frequent character death. To address this, we are reworking this rune to no longer cost Discipline, but have a 20 second cooldown.

While this change may initially seem severe, it has several major benefits we hope players will take the opportunity to explore and experiment with:
  • All Discipline is now reserved for defensive and utility skills, encouraging Demon Hunters to take greater advantage of these skills.
  • Nightstalker will feel less mandatory in conjunction with Punishment, freeing up a Passive slot in many builds.
  • If you choose to keep Preparation (Punishment) in your build, the cooldown corresponds with roughly how long it would take to regenerate the appropriate amount of Discipline (unless you had a large amount of Resource Cost Reduction).
  • Cooldown Reduction is now a more attractive stat, and this may open up new CDR-focused builds.

We know this changes builds and the gameplay pattern for some Demon Hunters. We’re also working hard to adjust other skills as well as introduce Legendary items both in this patch and constantly in the future in order to continue opening up new and exciting ways to play.

This change will soon be available on the PTR, and we hope that you will take the opportunity to try it out and let us know how it feels. We're eager to hear your feedback on this and other changes coming in Patch 2.1.

Great job. Finally something that helps you use other skills.

Less mandatory skills pls. LESS

lol, i may actually use it now if the CD is only 20s. i'm not one to normally fiddle with long cooldowns, vengeance being a more-recent change

Sounds logical.

I'm sure many cluster bomb DHs will not like this change, but CDR builds are really lacking right now, perhaps this will help.

I would REALLY love to see changes to other, far less efficient skills, in order to make them more competitive with the popular T5-T6 builds today. I hope the new patch brings at least a few of changes like that.

Ummm....random change lol....
Okay then~
Wait.....this still is good.....

So new Punishment rune:

Restore 75 hatred
20 second cooldown

It's like a bat companion almost....but better and doesn't use companion slot.

0% CDR:
3.75 hatred/s

10% CDR:
4.1667 hatred/s

20% CDR:
4.6875 hatred/s

30% CDR:
5.357 hatred/s

40% CDR:
6.25 hatred/s

50% CDR (most likely not going to be that high...):
7.5 hatred/s

Don't forget em hexing pants of mr nyan ^.^

Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. We needed a BUFF! not a stupid nerf

It's good to see that a change like that gets a heads up and explanation (though this does appear to be a nerf). I don't use Prep-Punishment often, but a lot of players do so giving them advance warning to discuss it and to go mess around with it on the PTR so they can give feedback is great.

Any changes incoming to Dexterity itself - perhaps rolling STI/Awareness into it? That would free up a passive for both DH and Monk.

It is a buff. Besides, once you get cindercoat, punishment is less necessary.

You can still use it, it functions similar to the bat, but it's less mandatory.

I'm also sure there are other changes which may make other abilities more attractive. This does hurt CA builds burst damage, but I'm sure something will make up for it.

Yikes! And cindercoat makes prep more effective not less mandatory.

It's definitely a nerf not a buff

Forces us to use less effective builds than CA spam.

  • not alone ofcourse

you'd need to address the lack of feedback between RoV and Nats 4 pc for group play
vengeance as well could use a buff for variety

this is gonna kill my DH.

    truly lame.

now im gonna get 1 shot by everything. AND be hatred starved.

No one is going to stack cdr for just 1 skill. Bad nerf is bad. My DH is going to go to the back burner now. GJ Blizzard. Instead of nerfing just add another rune to it ffs. It has completely ruined my build now.

DH defense needs to be addressed

you cant just say " Demon hunters die all the time because they arent using defensive skills, so we will take away one of your offensive skills so you can use a defensive one instead"

Yuck. Does this mean Multishot: Suppression fire is getting changed as well?

First of all 'All' discipline cannot be considered reserved for defense if punishment remains in any form. English much?

Oh noes the metrics say too many are using punishment and night stalker. How many are using defensive special affixes by the way? lol. You still don't get it.

What purpose does this serve other than to force everyone further to WD/Crus? No one wants to sit around generating 2/3 of the time, DERP!

Don't you have more barb nerfs to pass out? Leave the functioning classes alone for the love of Pete.

This made my morning lol. What kind of tool reads this thread and says that. "were adding a 20 second cool down to a skill that had no cool down at all." - "looks like a buff to me, time to go buy that bridge I was offered earlier".

Yeah to add to my post above. I have no desire to use defensive skills on a pure dps based character. It makes it simply not fun.
