this is true, but limiting the entrance would not allow people to just farm it repeatedly.
For example, Uber Trists were relatively easy to get all the keys and create the portals, if you are geared enough you can kill the bosses and get the torch. -easy to do.
Now imagine Uber Trists's keys no longer droppable from kills, but instead use very rare crafting materials that could otherwise craft armor which is guaranteeing at least some good loot.
They could also create lockout timers, but I absolutely hate the idea of lockouts, and I'm 100% sure that Blizzard would never implement it, they would never create lockouts because they refuse daily quests for Diablo 3 as well. (these things force you to play consistently, which isn't casual)

Crafting portals would create a path of least resistance. That being said 'future endgame content' will pretty much do the same thing.
At some point we just wont need gear from 'inferno baal'. When that day comes, craftable portals could create a nice niche for encouraging us to continue to farm Inferno while we do our Uber Trist runs.
The idea of lockout timers in D3 leaves a bad taste in my mouth. D2 always rewarded the player (legit player) for the time spent in game (even if that meant killing baal 53 times a day).
In WoW they make sense. You WANT to save your progress thru a dungeon. Having to clear an entire raid instance the first time you enter it would get pretty old, pretty quick. Additionally, If you could farm the early bosses in a new instance you could quickly out gear it. Meaning even your most avg of players would consume content at a much greater rate than even the most hardcore of hardcore.
With Diablo the itemization isn't all tied to 'farming bosses.' The encounters are much shorter. And the odds of you getting the same 'item drop' are astronomical. The quest for perfect items is almost never ending.
I like this idea alot. Using super rare loot to craft portals to places few have gone would be cool.
For example it would be cool if they crafted a portal that sent you too a mini sc2 universe and u were attacked by a swarm of zerg. Just imagine a swarm of banelings and mutas coming at you. If it were hc i would prolly crap my pants.

You mean you didn't automatically run around ignoring the stupid little guys to make sure there weren't any shamans?
even the shaman weren't worth killing in the long run. :P
Not too late in development, however this wouldn't be 'launch' content. This is more expansion/endgame extension content, just like they used it for in D2.
Given that we won't have a Cube and we will be relying on NPC crafters, I can see this as potential content in the future.
