One of the most iconic ideas of voodoo is inflicting pain on a doll that also inflicts pain on the victim. So why does the Witch Doctor not have a spell that does this? Say selecting a target enemy running away and doing terrible damage to a doll that could also do AOE to other monsters? IDK
Does voodoo culture use the dolls like that? Well for one it's not real is it? So no they couldn't use it like that? Does it matter? Things get twisted and new ideas form all the time. What matters in a game like Diablo3 is is it cool and fun.
The culture around voodoo is real, even if the magic is questionable.
But I guess it's just not how witch doctors in Diablo work. There are spells that summon fetishes, and the gargantuan is supposedly a giant wicker man, and their unique off-hand item is a voodoo doll.
From a designer point of view, while the idea is pretty cool ... how do you translate that visually? It would be tricky to make it as flashy and obvious as a flurry of flaming bats.
Ya, true witch doctors were meant to heal curses and were more of a medicine man.
As i understand it, voodoo dolls have a variety of uses that aren't all from the same religion, so the origin is unclear. Pins can be used in healing to mark injuries like a modern day patient chart, but the dolls also have uses for communicating with spirits and things.
I think the fetishes and hex curse hit on some of this visually.
