Remember all that changed after the release of Diablo 2? Some of it was immediate, some of it was over time and the expansion. Call it the normal evolution of a game, call it response to fans, what have you but I bet some would be surprised that on launch Diablo 2 had (hope I get these right):
No mana potions for sale.
Normal throwing items disappeared with no durability left.
Summoned skeletons were constantly disappearing as you moved and didnt scale.
Followers didn't have equipment slots and disappeared between games.
Elite versions of belts had the same number of stacks as their normal version.
I was trying to think what would be the first things changes in Diablo 3 and at the top of my list was the fact mercs would only be viable in normal mode. They are just too cool to not be able to use more. Now that is done, so what else do you predict will change? Town Portals back? Oh wait. :)
So.. you did or didn't want these in D2?
What they'll add to D3 after release (assume it's not there AT release):
>Dueling system in the world.
>In/out of combat states.
>Change in the drop rate of certain items/rares.
>Mercs will get nerfed.
>Hardcore pvp (one for perma-death, another for wow-style duels (1 hp remains after defeat))
