Diablo® III

Made D3's color scheme darker ingame [+video]

Hello guys. Here are some screenshot comparisons of how I made Diablo III have a darker color scheme, it works in game, these screenshots were not modified using an image editor. It works as a direct3d post processing filter, making the game look sharper, have less saturation, add a slight bit of a (silver) sepia tone, slightly lowered exposure, slightly raised gamma.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the files to make this happen for your game so here are some screenshots. I want to know what you guys think.

[UPDATE 2] Heres a video of it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcnIIVYSuLM

[UPDATE] Here are a new set of screenshots, I changed the sepia tone to a more neutral silver color (removing that reddish look), and balanced the exposure and gamma, making it not so dark as before.

Why are games only good if they're played in the dark?

It's a just a personal preference, for me the game looked washed out, and had too much blue and green hues.

Looks really good except the cathedral its too much giving it a red hue I would like to see some minor tweaks back to the lighter side to even it up or it wont work for intended low lighting areas

the exterior areas don't need any darkening they are perfectly fine as they are, D2's exteriors weren't that dark, does nobody remember act 2 or 5? about the darkest one i can remember was act 3.

the dungeons need some serious darkening and contrast, they are really really too "soft" and "smooth" looking

and it's not just the way their textures are but the style of them, i don't know about the whole "multi-layer" look, kind of kills the whole "deep dark dungeon to hell" feeling, it really doesn't feel like a dungeon to me

thus far all i have seen in screenshots and whatever is dungeons with a similar style to the skeleton king tombs

no sign of dungeons with the style of the monastery in D2 act 1, the durance of hate in act 3 or any of the other more cramped "one-layer" dungeons of d2

some people like to, you know, SEE THINGS.

oh yeah and i'm aware they are supposedly going to make each dungeon different somehow, well thus far i haven't seen any like the D2 ones

also, the darkening pic of the cathedral/skeleton king tombs is really great, unfortunately just darkening it doesn't solve the other issues i mentioned above

Sharpening the image is cheating.

For the first time I'll say that the darker ones look better.. but only because of the textures. It's sharper, less cartoonish. The rest is fine the way it is!

Just remember what Jay Wilson said... It's really easy to photoshop a screenshot, but you can't photoshop the game.

The game does appear to be far too saturated. Much like poorly made saturday morning cartoons, however it's fun as hell to play.

I really wish you hadn't sharpend it. Cant really make an informed comparison because you did to much.

The biggest issue I have with D3, is it seems to have that "full screen glow" effect (not quite at the level of wow) and I don't know if you can turn it off.

He isn't using PS, he is using a Direct3D post process filter (by his own words). The only issue that really comes from using filters on the game is you are placing more graphical overhead on your GPU/CPU and it can/will degrade game performance.

LIKED. it looks more gritty. i think it should be this way. can you tell us how to go about getting this exactly?

Certainly prefer the game darker and grittier.
