I know Bashiok has said that they have moved beyond the unattuned runestone system. I, myself, quite liked the idea; though it obviously had issues for stash storage. Also, being random, not getting the spell effect you were looking for would be frustrating.
My suggestion: keep unattuned runestones, but give the Jeweler recipes to craft runestones - some learnt, some as drops.
The Jeweler, going by the information in the game guide, has the least value of the three artisans. He can upgrade gems and unsocket gems. It would make sense for him to also manage runestones. He could craft unattuned runestones to the color you wished. Perhaps if the additional attributes on the runestone were not to you liking he could reapply the recipe (for a fee). He could also upgrade runestones.
The benefits of this would be that the randomisation would be still there in drops (recipes) and additional rune attributes. also the recipes would do a lively trade on the AH. There would be recipes for 7 levels of each of the 5 colors for 5 class' spells, with each class having between 20 and 25 spells (somewhere around 4000 recipes). Collecting every recipe would be quite an achievement.
Also, being able to retune runestones (for a fee) would mean that you could swap a runestone from one class to another assuming you had the recipe. This would go some way to reducing stash clutter and provide further ongoing gold sinks.
I'd be interested in your thoughts.
There's one aspect of your idea that I just had to latch on to, that being the crafting runestones.
The thought I immediately went to was, what if your jeweler could actually create UNIQUE runestones?
In essence you could FIND the 5 runestones in the world, but with the unattuned runestone this now gave you the opportunity to let your jeweler put on his own special recipes. So basically we have 5 runestones you find in the world, but, I don't know say 3 more that are created specifically by the jeweler, giving us like 8 total.
These other 3 runestones would then have their own unique properties from the previous 5, but you would have to find a level 7 unattuned runestone AND the level 7 recipe to create the best version of that specific one. This could also mean that maybe they are rather strong considering the amount of work we would have to put in to finding both level 7 items and getting the jeweler to the highest ranking. They would of course have random properties associated with them to allow for variety within the runestones as well.
What do you think? I'm biased so of course I think it's interesting. Haha.
I think that every runed skill is like a whole new skill in terms of development (animation/sounds/graphics as well as numbers and balance to think of), so there is no way there are going to add another few dozen skills by adding three new rune effect per skill ;)
Good idea, although he should be able to use unattuned runes to create hybrid rune stones via rare recipe drops: that is rune stones that have some properties of one and some of the other. A skill's animation can be randomly chosen as either stone's, while the effects are from both types.
