This is exactly what they did with Cataclysm, released the game to people on the date, but let them know it wouldn't be playable until 7pm.
I assume they will do the same for D3.
iirc, WotLK and TBC (and probably original WoW, though i started playing a year after release) which i went to both midnight releases, and played imediately after getting home.
These 2 expansions where actually released 1 day later than the U.S. so that the servers would be online when we got our copies.
imo, giving it to us early, and just making sure consumers are aware the game isn't live until a certain time in the evening is the best option.
