Yeah, I'm going to blare the games own soundtrack. I don't want to replace it, the soundscape of an experience is very important. Later when I'm in hell or something I'll just play music I like.

Decemberists, Iron and Wine, Andy McKee, Trace Bundy, Punch Brothers, maybe some classical stuff. The Goat Rodeo Sessions are fantastic.

Bach fugues would be really good, some Tchaikovsky would be suitably epic while playing the monk.

I don't need to recreate any particular flavor of music to enjoy the game with, for that I will just keep the game's music going.

When I first read "Nightwish" I actually said out loud "WTF is he talking about?!". I'm not a huge Nightwish fan so I haven't heard every song by them. Surprised me a bit with that "near growling".

They have a few songs where their male vocals reach near growling levels. For those like me who sensitive to that growling crud, it's borderline. But it works for those songs.

To convert the death metal growling fans back to the singing side...

I found when I played Diablo I, Diablo II, and WoW with the original soundtrack, I was far more immersed in the game's overall mood direction and enjoyed the experience much more.

With that said, how can we leave out Lamb of God: Wrath album? That s*** is pretty heavy.

Listen to this song and tell me it doesn't make you visualize you hauling your character on mighty quests, through great sweeping dungeons and monsters bellowing from the deeps... calling your divine retribution.

If you'd be interested in something like that with vocals I would urge you to check out Summoning and Elffor, though they're not for everyone as the rest of this thread has pointed out several times.

I was playing D2 and listening to the Girl with Dragon Tattoo soundtrack the other day... it fit nicely.

And you know, for sentimental reasons, when I think of music in Diablo, I will always be reminded of their background music for Tristram:

Meh. You youngsters and your rage punk music (barf). The reason why Blizzard doesn't focus on music in games is because everyone has different tastes, and Blizz plays it safe so as to not alienate players

Sad, because music is one of the best mood-setting devices there is. You normally can't go wrong with some good orchestral pieces though.

The best part about the Diablo music is that it's pretty sparse. It makes for a much more dynamic play experience, also giving the music more impact when it builds and crescendos.

Don't get me wrong. I like several bands that play some pretty hard stuff. But even the most diverse and dynamic of those bands won't be substituted in place of the full Diablo sound experience on my first play through. :)

This isn't just a "let the bodies hit the floor" game.

Oh I assure you. Many bodies will hit the floor and / or be obliterated. Just not mine!!

I think it's perfectly fine to put on your own music during your games. That's your choice. Although I always leave the game's soundtrack on because it is an essential part of the immersion!

I personally listen to the original soundtrack in my first playthroughs. But when it's time to farm and grind, it's usually melodic death metal, black metal and metalcore.
