You may want to try running it in Compatibility Mode set to Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Windows 7 is a very different beast.

I didn't have to do that. I just run it in windowed mode.

Install it first, then go to http://us.battle.net/support/en/article/diablo-ii-patch-information

Install 1.13

When that's done, go to the desktop icon for it, right click it, go to properties, and then select "Run as Windows XP" or w/e and make sure you're on administrator. It works for me as i've been playing it on Win 7 since Sept last year.

Are you installing via CDs or the download from the battlenet site when you link your keys to bnet? I downloaded the installs from bnet and run win7 and have had no issues.

Try running as an admin. If that doesn't work I would reccommend trying to run in compatability mode in addition to running as admin.

i had to manually get the patch on my diablo 2 before i could run it you might try that if you havent already.

using windows 7 64bit

I installed it on my 64-bit Win7 laptop yesterday and didn't have to do anything funky, no forcing compatibility or admin.

I downloaded it from battle.net instead of using my old disks- OP try downloading from battle.net instead. You will have to register your cd key with battle.net.

running it as admin is pretty important if you want to play online.

Depending upon your video card the colours may appear all messed up whilst in game (once you get it working)

If that happens you can do one of 3 things:

- Play in windowed mode (add a -w at the end of your "target" in the Shortcut properties)
- Open Windows 7 Screen Resolution page (right click desktop) and leave it open then resume playing
- There is a REG fix for D2 but I cba looking. I just used the Screen Resolution method.

You might want to try brining up Task Manager and killing explorer.exe. Then launch the game.

Did you manually download and patch it to 1.13c ? (Or whatever the latest patch is)

Check your Video card drivers are up to date and reinstall DirectX.

Also, run the video card test (forget exact EXE name in D2 directory) and run it in Direct-Draw mode not Direct-3D.

ETA: x64 Windows 7 Pro on a T7500 workstation and no problems with D2 so I know it works.

adding the -w to the target line worked
