Diablo® III

Screen Turns Black and alt tabs me out.

How is this not a temp issue and/or game software issue??? My first post in the Blizz forums, and am mostly a reader. I am very irritated on getting this black screen and crash to desktop issue, because when I am in the middle of a fight in Hardcore that is not a good way to die.

I have a two monitor setup. One 27" Samsung 120 LED 3D 1080p monitor to play the game on and a Dell 22" 1680x1050 for statistics such as monitoring gpu, cpu, and temp usage along with music.

I crash to desktop once an hour averagely.

I am running an Nvidia 580gtx at stock clocks and here are my settings for Nvidia Control Panel and in game.

Just to note my FPS is running between 75-1xx hz. I setup 120 for both FPS bars in game, with vsync on and max settings for graphics.

In the control panel. The only things I messed with are the Ambient Occlusion to "Quality" and Vertical Sync to "Adaptive"

My GPU temps run about 80C on load if set to auto fan. If I set fan to 85% I get around 65-70C

The sorry thing is I am running a whopping 99% usage on GPU while Vram is running 512 and below. So in which turns that means when I play the game and when I get CTD issues I see my graphs spike crazy in GPU-Z. To conclude, it must be a driver issue or D3 issue. This does not affect my gameplay for other intensive games such as Skyrim, BF3 and Crysis 2.

If anyone has a solution, please give me feedback. Here are my system specs.

990fx-gd80 MSI motherboard
955BE Phenom II C3 @ 3.4Ghz and 2.8 North bridge Frequency
EVGA GTX 580 at stock clocks
4x4 Corsair Vengeance @ 1600 and timings set to 9-8-8-24-41-1T
120Gg Vertex Plus SSD which the game is installed on
Xbox 360 controller with Xpadder for comfort ;)
etc...

Okay before anybody goes bashing, I have set "EVERYTHING to STOCK" for my hardware and doesn't make a difference.

And by reading all the post, this issue is spontaneous and corruptive. If this may help, what error code does this refer to? 5E144E53-AFC6-4E53-A300-5793A304D4E5.

Hope there will be a fix to this problem soon.

Thanks Blizzard for a good game but also a big headache at that.

Hi there,

i have the same Problem and would like to contribute to the solution, espacially the way to bring the PC to nVidia, but since i´m from Germany the Bay-Area is a little too far away.

I currently run an Alienware Aurora (2 years old) with a Geforce 285 GTX. (Exact DxDiag will follow) I installed the Performance Tools to monitor my GPU Heat Level and run the 301.42 Drivers for my nVidia Card.

The Black Screens occur on my system 98% of the time when i´m playing Act 2 AND there are water effects somewhere on the screen. Things are getting serious when entering the following areas:
- Sewers
- Ancient Waterway
- Oasis with small beaches or water ponds
- Oasis with Dungeons full of water

All other areas of the Game are running smooth, besides the 2% where the game tabs out. I guess thats the case when some gfx related effect is similar to those with the water areas.

I tried many solutions and tips found in this forums, but up to date i have no solution for this. Here is the list of things i tried so far, in numerous combinations.

- Foreground FPS set down to 30
- Background FPS set down to 1
- All details set to Low/Off
- Low FX on
- AA off
- Downclocking every Setting 100/200/300 MHz with the Perfomance Tool of nVidia
- Setting the Fan to 100% with the Perfomance Tool of nVidia
- Playing in Windowed Mode

Overheating is definitely NOT the problem. The game turns black and tabs me out at 56° Celsius in Windowed Mode and ALL Settings to Low/Off. I run around in Caldeum with no Problems, jump in the sewers an just have to wait a Minute when the First Black Screen occurs.

Other Games deliver no Problems. Skyrim with High-Res Textures and all things set to High is running with no Problems, although not very smooth because of the "low" 285 GTX. If there is any other way to provide help, other than bringing the PC physically to the US, let me know.

GTX 560

unplayable and damaging frequency of BSOD means I am not risking playing this game any further. same on 296.1 and 301.42 drivers.

let me know when you are nearer a solution, until then i will play trion games that don't damage my computer, thanks

I have been in an email conversation with blizz tech support for about a week now looking for a solution to this problem, and the most recent guy to respond told me

"If you are getting blue screens, it is definitely some kind of hardware issue. "

I find it hard to believe that all the people having this problem (not just in this thread, but in the dozen others as well) all of a sudden have faulty hardware that only acts broken when it tries to run diablo 3. I dont know that they are considering this to be a problem on their end, so it looks like we are in for a long wait for a fix or are just out of luck altogether. Oh well, it was fun for the two and a half weeks I got to play it.

Running 2x GeForce GTS 250 in SLI mode
Driver version 301.42

Screen flickers black, then eventually comes back to the game. This will repeat 5 or so times in a 30 minute span. Eventually, I will not be able to recover from the black screen and no amount of alt tabbing, jamming the windows button, or screaming at my screen will cause the game to return, or even the desktop to display. I have to do a hard restart to recover, which is never a good option.

Seems this issue is well-known enough, just adding my own experience and awaiting a solution.

Update:
WORKAROUNDS
After you get the needed data, try switching on Vsync and dropping your "Foreground FPS" to 40 in the options menu. It doesn't work for everyone, but it may help some while the engineers work on the issue.

Using this suggested workaround has seemed to work for me. I was only able to play for like 30 mins but I didn't get a single black screen.

I wanted to add a bit of info to this discussion.

I was having this issue on a system running 2 GTS 250's in SLI. The temperatures were staying relatively fine, but I was still getting the crashes.

I lowered the clocks.. but eventually, and occassionally, they would still happen.

This game seems to be picky in how it stresses the GPU, or it's a driver combo, I'm not sure.

So I said screw it and tried something else. I downloaded HW monitor and instead of looking at temperature I looked at voltages.

I did a clean install of the newest drivers (the beta 301.24).

I turned back on SLI (I know it doesn't affect this game, but we play a lot of other things and it's a pain to switch it back and forth). I turned my clocks back to normal. Put the game on default settings High>Medium>High and turned OFF V-sync. I set the maximum framerate to 65.

In the nVidia menu I turned V-sync from application controlled to Adaptive.

And I monitored.

Low and behold... when the fans had to kick up past 75% (when the cards were heating up during heavy action) the voltage would fluctuate from 11.6 to 11.3.

That may not affect all games with a crash, but unstable voltages are a problem.. and the 9800GTX+ and GTS250, along with many "run hot" cards -want- their voltage to run properly.

As they would say on MythBusters. "There's your problem".

Swapped out with a better PSU (A corsair GS 700) and stabalized the voltages.

I only got to test for 40 minutes... but I had no crashes on the settings I listed above.

Tonight I will try to kick the fans to 100%. Monitor temperatures and voltages. I will try and play for at least 4 hours or so.

I'll report back.

A good monitoring tool: Speccy by Piriform....free too.

Google 'speccy', simple and easy.

I would post the direct link but Blizzard may not like it....

Interesting post DuskyLuck.....and a good point. It seems odd that every other game 'we' play is tolerant of these fluctuations. Not a critisism of your findings, just weird that D3 is so intolerent of it?

Fair enough if it is a critisism. I'll be fair, I haven't had long to test, so It may not work once I play for more than a few hours.

This is my wife's rig. I know we've taken it to LAN events and had marathon League of Legends sessions. She regularly plays things like Oblivion, Dungeon Defenders while watching netflix on a second monitor.

I don't think she plays anything -crazy- like Skyrim or Crysis but I know we've run through a variety of games.. and it's not like Diablo III is really that graphically intensive..

So I agree: It would strike me as odd that this would be the first game to be so sensitive to voltage fluctuations.

Furthermore: HWmonitor is not always reliable. And the 12V rails can be subject to differences of +- 5%, and I've seen tell of stable systems near 11.4-11.5 or even 12.3 without too much trouble.

But heck. Like most people in this forum I've thrown everything at it. Messed with settings galore, underclocked, upped fan speeds, ran selective startups. used 1 card, etc, etc.

So we'll see if it helps - maybe it won't. I'm crossing my fingers. But heck, it's one more thing to look at.

Either way, if the power supply was truly dropping as low as 11.3 I don't want it in there anyway. It makes me uncomfortable, especially with a system running SLI.

This problem is bizzare to boot.

I thought about Blizz saying they were trying to reproduce this problem in conjunction with nVidia. I also had thought I had read on the EU forums that they had -failed- to reproduce this problem so far.

I imagine that nVidia would have it in their power to test a variety of cards, drivers, and even processor combinations to try and reproduce a problem. So called "Crash" machines. Every tech support center has them. You try to reproduce issues - hence why you call the crash machines.

The only thing I could see them -not- changing around is a power supply. They probably have something rock solid in there, and it's not changed throughout tests. Heck, they probably get it for free from some manufacturer.

Past that the only common theme I have seen throughout many of these posts about crashes are that the hardware should be MORE than capable of handling it.

It's all 9800gtx/+/250's. 6950's, 295's, 560/550ti 's. The only common thing I see among those cards is that they are fairly power hungry. Though the AMD one shouldn't be so much..

I've also noted people having issues and fixing them by setting processor affinities to a single core, or disabling certain cores.

So here's the thing. It seems like people have success with lowering clock speeds. Disabling cores, generally reducing stress on the system...

What would nVidia/Blizzard -not- test to reproduce this problem?

Why the variation in video cards/driver versions, different patches, different motherboards..

There has to be some common link we are missing.

It's bugging the crap out of me. This was just the most recent thing. I'm running on the theory that for some bizarre coding reason this game somewhat uniquely stresses video cards. sends them some looping code, has memory leaks like mad, something.

Maybe it is that this game produces conditions stressful enough where a fluxuation in voltage will tip it over the edge.

Heck who knows. Just keep trying until one of us figures out a brainstorm or their engineers fix it for us eh?

OS: Win7 64 (I find most users that have this issue is on a 64bit OS. Might mean something)
Vid Card: GTX260
Driver: 301.42

I had the frequent black screen crash that needed reboots prior to this. I didnt know what temp was when it crashes since I cant alt tab or do anything else.

Used Nvidia System Tools and created a profile just for Diablo3 that underclocked the ff:
GPU Proc lowered by 100
GPU Mem lowered by 200
GPU Graphics lowered by 200
Fan at 100%

Aside from that, I have the game at max settings and vsync on.

Idle temp is now 45c and game temp peaking at 60c. Now I am playing for more than 2 hours w/o any issues in Act 2 Hell. I can say that whatever they did in the last update made my vidcard run hotter. Before the update, I didnt have any issues and was able to finish Normal, Nightmare, and first Act of Hell.

I hope this helps and I hope Blizzard can identify what they did in the last update that caused this.

Update: Experienced another crash after about 2 hours of playing. After reboot, I was able to play for another hour. I have created a graphics card underclocking profile that I enable before I play the game so I am sure the card is underclocked when I crashed.

Update: after 1 week of crashing yet still trying to play, the problem worsend to the point that i get the crash even while just browsing in firefox. i will get no issues whatsoever for hours on end while on safemode and while on normal mode without any drivers installed. but once i reinstall any of the drivers from 175 to 301, i crash minutes after.

i bought a new card, gtx 550ti. no changes in softwares. no reinstallation of OS. plugged in the 301 driver. im able to play again.

2 questions: 1. how many of the posters here have their cards totally die out? 2. (im just thinking) is it possible that after the patch, something is causing the cards a lot of stress that it is destroying certain video cards?

i just find it a little surprising that a lot of people (some with just newly built system) got problems after a patch after being able to play weeks with no issues.
