The honey badger (Mellivora capensis), also known as the ratel, is a species of mustelid native to Africa, Southwest Asia, and the Indian Subcontinent. Despite its name, the honey badger does not closely resemble other badger species, instead it bears more anatomical similarities to weasels. It is classed as Least Concern by the IUCN owing to its extensive range and general environmental adaptations. It is primarily a carnivorous species, and has few natural predators because of its thick skin and ferocious defensive abilities.

The honey badger is the only member of the genus Mellivora. Although it was initially assigned to the badger group in the 1860s, it is now generally accepted to bear very few similarities to the subfamily Melinae, instead being much closer to the marten family. Differences between Mellivora and Melinae include different dentition formulae. Though not related to the wolverine, which is a large-sized deviant of the marten family, the honey badger can be considered an analogous form of weasel (polecat). The species first appeared during the middle Pliocene in Asia. Its closest relation was the extinct genus Eomellivora, which is known from the upper Miocene, and evolved into several different species throughout the whole Pliocene in both the Old and New World.

Although mostly solitary, honey badgers may hunt together in pairs during the May breeding season. Little is known of the honey badger's breeding habits. Its gestation period is thought to last six months, usually resulting in two cubs, which are born blind. They vocalise through plaintive whines. Their lifespans in the wild are unknown, though captive individuals have been known to live for approximately 24 years.

Honey badgers live alone in self-dug holes. They are skilled diggers, being able to dig tunnels into hard ground in 10 minutes. These burrows usually only have one passage and a nesting chamber and are usually not large, being only 1–3 m in length. They do not place bedding into the nesting chamber. Although they usually dig their own burrows, they may take over disused aardvark and warthog holes or termite mounds.

Honey badgers are intelligent animals and are one of a few species known to be capable of using tools. In the 1997 documentary series Land of the Tiger, a honey badger in India was filmed making use of a tool; the animal rolled a log and stood on it to reach a kingfisher fledgling stuck up in the roots coming from the ceiling in an underground cave.

Honey badgers are notoriously fearless and tough animals, having been known to savagely attack their enemies when escape is impossible. Bee stings, porcupine quills, and animal bites rarely penetrate their skin. If horses, cattle, or Cape buffalos intrude upon a ratel's burrow, it will attack them. They are tireless in combat and can wear out much larger animals in physical confrontations. The aversion of most predators toward hunting honey badgers has led to the theory that the countershaded coats of cheetah kittens evolved in imitation of the honey badger's colouration to ward off predators.

The voice of the honey badger is a hoarse "khrya-ya-ya-ya" sound. When mating, males emit loud grunting sounds. Cubs vocalise through plaintive whines. When attacked by dogs, honey badgers scream like bear cubs.

Honey badgers often become serious poultry predators. Because of their strength and persistence, they are difficult to deter. They are known to rip thick planks from hen-houses or burrow underneath stone foundations. Surplus killing is common during these events, with one incident resulting in the death of 17 Muscovy ducks and 36 pullets.

Because of the toughness and looseness of their skin, honey badgers are very difficult to kill with dogs. Their skin is hard to penetrate, and its looseness allows them to twist and turn on their attackers when held. The only safe grip on a honey badger is on the back of the neck. The skin is also tough enough to resist several machete blows. The only sure way of killing them quickly is through a blow to the skull with a club or a shot to the head with a gun, as their skin is almost impervious to arrows and spears.

The "killer badger" is a creature found in a number of modern urban myths from Basra (Al Basrah) province, Iraq, where it was said to have attacked both people and livestock. It has since been identified as the honey badger, inflated by rumor.

In many parts of North India, honey badgers are reported to have been living in the close vicinity of human dwellings, leading to many instances of attacks on poultry, small livestock animals and sometimes even children. They retaliate fiercely when attacked, and are reviled in North India.

I would like to point out a little reality to everybody, both complainers and and defenders alike. What's going on currently is in all actuality crap. Marketing for months has been directed at pre-order sales and downloads, buying the product and having it ready to play at launch. but come on, you knew it wasn't gonna happen, i knew it wasn't gonna happen, and blizz certainly knew it was gonna happen. But as it goes with a consumer society, we bought it anyways. We all bought our digital copies and our in store pre-orders. we all lined up and waited to get this game in ours hands, waited for the launch to commence. and i'm certain we all knew this would happen. Saying that blizz is working on fixing the problem and is doing everything they can, is crap. dont kid yourselves. a problem like this you can see coming from a long way off. but all the complaining about the fail launch isn't getting the game back up faster. hard facts, but its true. blaming blizz isn't going to get us anywhere either, cause when push comes to shove, we all still bought the game. we bought and paid for the game and all the crap and problems it comes with. i guess what i'm getting at is, "it is what it is". So we'll wait, not like there's a choice, and !@#$% and complain. then we'll play the game when blizz lets us, and there will be praises a plenty for a good game. and in the future when another game comes out with hype as equal to this, we'll do it all over again.
Why don't people just make a character on the Euro server to pass the time? Beats sitting in a forum crying about how they cant play the game.

Why can't I change my potrait to my CE ones?
Just ate dinner came back and was saddled with error 3003 upon login attempt. How very anti-climatic.
Blizzard: Please keep the servers offline until I finish my popcorn.
I can still load and play D1 today, 16 years after it was released. Bet I won't be able to do that with D3 16 years from now
blizzard is failing extremely bad with all the other launches that they have had they should have been prepared and don't comment back to this saying its not worth buying servers they can rent out servers specifically for a launch that way they don't have to deal with them longterm. They said they would be done at 1130 this morning and now its been pushed back all the way until 330. This has to be one of the worst launch day failures thats ever occurred.
