Diablo® III

FPS Stuttering issues. Now with screenshots!

We have all been experiencing the FPS stuttering and know it can get very annoying. I'm including an album of screenshots to show exactly what events/things cause this to happen.
If you are experiencing the same kind of stuttering during these occasions then reply to the thread and confirm.

My PC can run this and MANY other games just fine at 60 FPS 1920x1080. D3 does run perfectly fine at 60 until these particular things trigger in game. Another note, turning everything low and putting it on the lowest res does ABSOLUTELY nothing to the situation.

Sure, a few FPS may not seem like a lot. But CONSTANTLY? Yes, annoying.

How to use the album:

- go to link

- IMG DESCRIPTIONS ARE ON BOTTOM, BE SURE TO READ.

- hover over image, click next/prev on right and left sides.

When stuttering happens:

- NPC Dialogue

- Loading unexplored areas of the map

- Using skills that weren't used yet since opening of game. Whether it's used by you or another player. This applies to mobs also.

- Monsters that come out of the ground/break from tombs or other places

- The upgrade animation of jeweler and blacksmith

Any others I missed, please reply with how and where you are experiencing them.

Here's mine. This is my hard drive when I play this game all the time:
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh43/guineapigofdoom/Diskusage.jpg

When ever a sound loads or texture or anything, stutter happens. On the right of the picture it looks like the game is giving my hard drive a heart attack. However once the assets are loaded they stay in memory. So if I exit the game the stutter will not appear where it did before. If I reboot the system the stutter is back full force. This game needs to load its assets more efficiently, I am almost certain this is what is causing the stutter.

Sorry for the lousy resolution of the screenshot, not very good with printscreen :(
oh almost forgot

bump plz fix!

Even people with SSDs say this is happening. Blizz, we can't afford NASA grade harddrives just so we can play the game WE bought from you.

One of the main ones i alway notice is in act 1 when you topple over the stack logs for the 1st time, that always casues quite a big stutter for me.

But you've hit the nail on the head of exactly what i get, any and every time something new happens for the 1st time = stutter.

this is similar to my problems, but for me it's not when something new happens but when enemies appear on screen also.

I run two GTX 560 Ti in sli and had a time where I just entered act II and had fps drop to 22 fps.

Logging out and logging back in fixed it.

That thread is about stutterings caused by loading assets not fps drops to 20s

I had the stuttering problem too whenever the game was loading something. The frame rate appeared to drop but the FPS counter would be shooting in to the hundreds. The cinematic videos were also choppy. Set the FPS limiters back to default. Change the full screen option to Windowed Fullscreen. This solved it for me. Other than the occasional hiccup when loading, everything is smooth now.

i have a second monitor set up to monitor cpu load and temps constantly in d3 to be able to watch whats going on and trying out different settings

the game is looping some stuff endlessly and unnecesarily.. you can try tweak to get a stable fps via the max forground fps and vsynch on but that limits my fps ALOT atm and it should be able to run fine with none of these on aswell. (seen 80-130fps alot less fluctuating around w vsynch off and no issues in the beta - and far less heat produced) it is just bugged atm.

i've tested alot of the past few days (30-40hrs of play) and here's some of the numbers:

with vsynch off and no max fps foreground set, i get 30-130 fps fluctuating almost too rapid for the eye to catch, 54% cpu load constantly, verry hot vidcard (compared to other games) temp just keeps climbing, i stopped when it tried go over 81C after 10-15secs.
normal in other games that are far more demanding i never go over 71C on my card.

with vsynch on and max fps set to 67 , 54% cpu load, rapid fluctuating 3x-60 fps, vidcard temp 71C-75C depending on location (still way too hot imo and not using this atm)

vsynch on and max 47 fps set (this is the 'sweetspot' for me) fps ingame now flucts between 31-32-33 verry slowly..compared to any other setting.
cpu load (!!) 0%-5% with small jumps to 11% when loading something after a portal or in town.. or at a between act video 11-25% load.. vidcard temp: 57C-61C
tabbed out of the game vidcard temp 46-49C, set background max fps to 8fps and cpu load is 0-4% (with it off it suddenly takes about 50% cpu load again)

the game's coding has some serious bugs that keep looping stuff unnecesarily on both cpu and gpu , which also produce loads of unneccesary heat.
I should be able to run at 60 fps with no problems w vsynch on, and 80-130 or so with it off, and have about the same load on cpu and heat produced (or maybe a few degrees hotter but no more than 3 is my estimate.)

fiddle with the max foreground fps setting untill you see your cpu load drop a mile (and the fps in game fluctuate alot less fast and only 1-3 fps, then you know you got your sweetspot.

I know its not optimal by far but its a temp workaround that will have your equipment live far longer, and save you some energy aswell (ill add numbers for power drawn by the system at these settings shortly)

my system: win xp pro sp3, intel core2 duo E8400, asus en9800gtx+ dk 512mb vidcard (heatpipes + fan at full speed) 2 case fans blowing at max speed aswell all at factory settings.

31 fps is far from optimal for me but at least its working, no stuttering , no excessive heat and power drawn (=longer life of my components)

mm , will try that now thanks ;)

seems still the same temps at my posted settings and cpu load.

but playing at 64 max fps foreground set now, and vsynch on.
cpu load 0-5%, gpu temp 63-64C idle on a bridge.. i see fps ingame fluctuate between 32 and 60 rapidly but not as rapid as on other settings with the (alot) higher cpu loads and gpu temps.

it feels alot smoother though i must say.. will test some more :) trying to find a setting where ill have 60fps AND low cpu load + temps .. for now i cant find one , this seems the best i can get and still have low cpu + normal gpu temp

edit : mm just reached over 71C again ..bugger, back to 47max fps forground it is.

Would that work to fix the stuttering as well?
