Diablo® III

HDD Major-Stuttering Solved (not micro-Stutt)

I feel relieved to see someone at Blizzard FINALLY acknowledge this issue, and also state that the tech team is working on a solution. I literally have spent around $100 uprading RAM and buying external storage devices in order to solve this solution, and nothing has worked thus far. Thank you for responding to this topic, Kaltonis. You answered many prayers today.

Just PLEASE find a way to fix it... I'd like to think I didn't spend all this money for nothing.. :/

How will this fix work exactly?

Don't expect any "exact" details. That is just something companies are not willing to share simply because plans might change overnight in a situation like this.

From what I understood. This upcoming fix (or patch) will "most likely" NOT have the stuttering issue resolved because it requires more time to test thoroughly.

Even if an upcoming patch fixes the stuttering issue regarding HDD response times, I believe you might still get better results with a flash drive. Why? ... because Diablo will not have loading screens, and the game will still constantly read from your HDD. Since flash drives (USB-stick/SD-card/SSD) have faster read response times (milli seconds) than mechanical drives, they will give you better results when constantly reading small amounts of data. Remember, its NOT about transfer rates (MB/s), its about the read response times or access permission time (the waiting time to gain access) measured in milli-seconds (ms).

If blizzard is to completely resolve stuttering issues, they would have to load the entire ACT MPQs related data into RAM, which will increase system requirements (and people wont be happy with that).

I'm sure Blizzard have clever engineers working on this, and they will eventually figure it out.

The reason I ask is because even though the stuter is like 90 percent gone when using it, it still stutters a little bit.

There are definitely multiple causes of stuttering going on. One of the more minor ones is scheduled to be fixed in the next patch, but I'm just unsure enough of which particular stuttering group that it will address that I don't want to promise any particular thread. We'll need to see who is fixed once we release it and react from there.

Someone else also mentioned that the vsync in the game is messed up or something.

I have Vsync enabled on both my work and home computers without issue. If there's a Vsync issue, it must be with specific cards or specific sets of drivers. Regardless, we (and/or AMD and Nvidia) will smooth it out eventually.

Are there any other issues with the game coding that are planned for fixing as well or is this pretty much it?

We support the crap out of our games, and we do so for years and years. We take a lot of pride in it. Any issue that we can either fix or alleviate by making changes on our end, we'll do so. We're not one of those game companies that are on a "three patches and then we move on" type of schedule; as long as stuff needs patching we'll keep patching.

How will this fix work exactly?

Honestly don't know. The engineers are too busy for me to bug them for details that I can't help with anyway. ^_^

And how will it affect people who are already playing the game already just fine?

There should be no affect at all. I personally don't have stuttering issues on either my work or home system, so I won't see any changes. Neither should anyone else who is currently stutter-free.
You rock! I seriously appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions for me (and others here im sure) I look forward to the forthcoming patches! I love this game and the Diablo series so damn much and I played the hell out of D2 back in the day so you can imagine my heartbreak when I started running into the stutering issues. But in any event, i'm more than willing to be patient and wait it out a little further (heck i waited 12 years for the game lol) Thank again K! ^ ^

I don't know anybody that is stutter free, and I have tried it on 4 of my computers as well.
90 Night Elf Druid

Instead of only HDD stuttering how about fixing all stuttering?
I hope it fixes my issue. Cause I love the game, just a pain to enter a new area or whatever. It does smooth out if I stay in an area long enough(everything is loaded I guess), but it would be awesome to have a stutter free game.

No problem! I'll try to maintain a better presence on the forum, time permitting.

I don't know anybody that is stutter free, and I have tried it on 4 of my computers as well.

Meanwhile, I don't know anyone who stutters. None of the machines at my office have the issue, none of my co-workers have it that I know of (although I think a friend of a co-worker might), and the three friends that I normally party with don't have stuttering either. This is why we avoid anecdotal evidence, because I don't think either of our experiences properly matches reality. :)
They were able to reproduce the problem, right? If none of your machines at work do it, some of them have to show signs of it? I find it odd, for me, its at its worst when I start the game after I restart windows. My HD light is on like a Christmas tree.
another question, i just got my sd card yesterday right. well am i suppose to format it or anything?

also when i tried to play today now its saying can't launch because a critical file is missing, so i dunno what happend overnight, but i unistalled and guess when i get back home gonna reinstall on the sdcard LOL but just curious if i need to format the sd card?
also it asks for allocation unit size, 4096bytes up to 64kb, does it matter which i choose? when it first pops open it auto puts on 32kbs, and do i leave quick format checked?

Just updating, i didn't format the sd card since i hadn't heard anything about if it needs it or not, so i reinstall the game to sd card, restarted computer and still got a critical file is missing again, DOH. But i found on the forums that if u have run this program as an adminstrator checked it will cause this error. So i unchecked it and now up and playing again WOOHOO lol

so i dunno if it was running fine yesterday checked and not today or if i sleeply checked it before trying to play this morning. but if u get that error then try checking or unchecking it.
Just adding my experiences:

Stuttering starts at the loading screen and is frequent, sort of like a badly scratched cd. It tends to taper off the longer I play the game.

Build:
i5 2500k
8GB 1300Mhz RAM
2x AMD Radeon HD 6850's in CrossfireX
1TB Caviar Black 7200RPM
320GB Hitachi 7200RPM
Windows 7 Professional 64bit

What I've tested:
Crossfire disabled/enabled
Game installed on same HDD as OS/Separate HDD from OS
Vsync On/Off
Fresh install of Catalyst drivers
GPU and CPU clocks at stock
Catalyst 12.4 Hotfix
12.4 CAP1 and CAP2
And all combinations of the above

Stuttering Occurs in all instances.

yeah i noticed too that it starts off really bad in the beginning and then tapers off as you play more. I dont know if this is cuz the game is loaded more in your ram or what but i dont have this problem with WoW or any other games really.
Kaltonis, have you personally tried to restart your computer? Because if the computers are not restarted the assets are already loaded so no stuttering.

I and a lot of my friends have that terrible stuttering and they all have high-end computers. They can play games like Crysis 2 and BF3 on max details without any single problem but not D3. How is that even possible if D3 has no stuttering problem in it? Is Diablo 3 which is supposed to run on "wide range of systems" more demanding game than Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3? And as you can see, there are hundreds of stuttering related to HDD threads in both US and EU forums. They can`t be all wrong right?

I`m really shocked how "none" of your coworkers have stuttering. I just can`t begin to understand that.

Install the game normally to your HDD, and then follow every step in the original post.

People forget that this thread is about trying the solution and seeing if it works for you.

Its not about complaining about the problem without trying anything.

Anyways ... I give up.

Good luck to all, and happy demon slaying.

Did you read my earliest post in this thread? If not, please do so, you'll find that your question is already answered. As a bonus, it's also the answer you're wanting to hear. :)

I was simply mentioning that I've not seen any of these stuttering issues in person outside of the stuttering you get in the first few seconds of most PC games as data is loaded into RAM. I was assuming we weren't really counting that. Outside of those first few seconds when I enter the game, my Witch Doctor has reached level 35 stutter free.
Kaltonis, actually it`s not just "for few seconds" but for like 20-30 minutes at least. After like 30 minutes, I think every asset is loaded so no stuttering UNTIL I decide to use another skill. Then at this time, it stutters "for a few seconds" but not just new skills, when I enter a dungeon or someting, "for a few seconds stuttering" again, when I see a new monster again stuttering for a few seconds, use a weapon with a different elemental damage? Few more seconds of stuttering...

All in all, this is not fun, that makes the game literally unplayable.

And no, I see no stuttering in modern games I`m playing not even "for a few seconds" (I have 8 GB system Ram). I see this problem only in Diablo 3 and no other modern games.

Thank you for your answer I just don`t want to ruin my experience when playing my favorite game of all time so I just stopped playing until the fix.

so i upgraded my i3 laptop to 8gb ram and I transferred all the diablo files on a 16gb usb 3.0 flash drive and now the game is running flawless
I hope we won`t have to buy 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive and do the transferring files/linking using cmd just to play that game. I hope there will be a fix from Blizzard.
Kaltonis, my stutters happen randomly. It will be perfectly fine and then BAM! I can only move in slow motion. It will last for about 5-10 mins. And then just like that, Im playing fine again for maybe 5-10 mins. It is so frustrating because I played JUST FINE on Beta with same comp (different internet connect since I moved, but I can play other games just fine like League)...I was so excited last night being the first night I was able to buy the game. So I came home to put it on my computer and it sat there ALL night in the pre client download crap. Wouldnt even break past 40%. So when I woke up this morning, I uninstalled the BETA version and turned off my computer. When I rebooted it shot right through that pre client crap. And I now have a stuttering problem.

I feel slightly robbed...or **!!d. Either or is still bad

I just want to cry because HOW LONG I HAVE WAITED...and this is what I get? Maybe this upcoming patch MIGHT fix my problem...if not this one then the NEXT ONE!?

Jesus, now I remember why I love RIOT more than Blizzard.
