I have a fairly nice graphics card (radeon hd 6950) that can pretty much run D3 maxed out, however, I know that my cpu is bottlenecking the rest of the system. What speed of a quad core cpu would i be looking for so as to not slow down my gpu at all?

What is your CPU right now?

I have an i5 2500k 3.3 gHz CPU and a Radeon HD 6850 and my computer runs everything nice and smooth.

It is a AMD A6-3600 APU quad core 2.1 ghz
I am limited right now by my mother board as to what new processor I should get but I was wondering if I could get an idea of how many ghz i should look for in a quad core cpu that would be pretty good for gaming without being extremely ex!#@%*ive

OP, you are screwed. AMD A-series APU (like one you have) is a dead-end tech. There is nothing else to upgrade to that has noticeable improvement from what you have.

Your only solution is to get a new motherboard and a CPU.

IE) i3-2120 CPU + a H61 motherboard (ie) ASRock H61M/U3S3)

Yeah dude, an outdated motherboard completely hinders your options for upgrading. If you upgrade, make sure your motherboard supports the new stuff (processor / socket type, sata 3.0, max RAM supported, etc.) 99% of hardware is backward / forward compatible, so the old hardware will work on the new connections and vice versa.

^ A great case, but if $ is an issue for you, its little brother, HAF 912, will work just as well for nearly $40 less (after rebates).

I just listed what CPU + Motherboard to get above. Quad-core is not important for D3.

kal I know I am asking this in a d3 forum but I also play games like skyrim which I believe benefit greatly from a quad core. I trust you from the great advice you give to everyone else to find me a suitable quad core cpu :)

Skyrim does not use beyond 2 cores. Blame it on an ancient GameBryo engine.

You will have replaced your PC long before majority of games actually fully make use of a quad-core CPU.

But if you are dead-set on buying a quad-core CPU, look into i5-2300 instead of i3-2120.
