In the Desolate Sands, I happened upon Lyndo. He said "This portal has made many rich, but it killed my brother Garot ..." While he was speaking I clicked a sort of beacon that seemed to activate; a yellowish orb rose from the beacon and remained glowing. After that I looted a chest, and the satchel beside Garot's corpse. I did this all in pretty rapid succession. Lyndo also ran away during this.

I'm assuming some portal was supposed to open when I clicked the beacon. After, leaving the area for a minute and coming back, the beacon no longer had the yellow orb and was un-clickable.

this happened to me too.... i wanted to get rich!

Your story is exactly the same as it happened to me. While Lyndo was speaking I had already clicked the beacon and looted the satchel. Lyndo ran and nothing happened after that (there wasnt a chest for me, random chest probably).

I think I found out why nothing happened. Because the intention for it is that something doesnt always happen.

Its most likely that there are 10 possible outcomes. I base this on the following achievement:

Wheel of Misfortune:
Experience all the posibilities of the Ancient Device in the Desolate Sands

below it is a progress bar that said 1/10 for me after clicking the device.

The portal just spawned a empty urn.... what a troll -_-
