Libertarian paternalism might work for school lunch choices for kids, like putting the salad within reach, but some of the best wizard spec choices for coop require that you not use the template that was set forth. For example, I'll bet a lot of coop dps wizards would love getting a double dps boost with familiar and arcane weapon.

If the developers have given people the choice to 'opt in' or 'opt out' of advanced settings at the start of the game, I think this would still be acceptable. Little kids playing this game can't handle advanced settings and customization, just like they can't make choices for themselves in the cafeteria.

Oh wait, wasn't this game 17+? We are all adults here, we can handle it.

there so many in gen chat that dont know this daily, that and how to identify items seems to be the biggest unknowns somehow

With a gaming mouse, the only thing I use the keyboard for is the shift key. I could change that too, but it felt awkward.

Anyone who watched the ForceStrageyGaming videos religiously before release would have known about this, but thanks of course for letting everyone know :D

If I didn't read about it months ago I would have seen it when going through all the screens in the options menu. I have a good habit of checking all the key-maps and settings when I play a new game.

And this is why you look through all of the options in the settings before you start playing your brand new game...

Then again, I was one of those kids who actually read the instructions of a new game when all of your friends just start complaining about not knowing how to play.

This is counter to Blizzard's current game design philosophy. They want you to jump right into the gameplay, instead of read a manual, or peruse through settings.

So to be consistent in game design, its important to make the default settings as close to what the majority of players would use as possible. Something like damage numbers should be turned on by default. Usually damage numbers take away from the aesthetic and artistic immersion, but in Diablo 3, the damage numbers typography and animation are so nicely done that they are satisfying in of themselves.

sans-Elective mode makes no sense

Many don't know about it. Also, you can't put "any" skill anywhere, I am pretty sure the mouse buttons are limited to certain types of abilities.

That's a good point, touche.
But yeah. I can't stand not looking through settings options.
Same thing with console games, although the past X amount of years instruction booklets have been reduced to 5 page, black-and-white bundles with the credits taking up two of those pages.

It's in the Gameplay options I believe. I saw it earlier when I was looking through seeing what my options were =p

I found it yesterday but wasn't sure what it even did? Does that mean, say im a DH, I can put 4 "hunter" skills in 4 of my slots? Cause I think I tried and it just replaced the Hunter skill already in my slot, but I was able to move them around like slot 2 to 1

Yeah, we complained about it a lot in Beta, but Blizz said they wanted their grandmother to be able to play the game and not have to worry about the complexity of managing abilities.

I use 3 of the 5 abilities from one group on my barb (leap, stomp, and ignore pain). If you didn't know about elective you couldn't do that...

I only knew to look for it because I was making builds on battle.net before the games release.
