I'm looking to build a budget gaming computer. Diablo 3 is my current concern but I'd like something that will last at least a couple years. I'm trying to stick to ~$500. Any suggestions or issues that you see with it I'd be very greatful to hear about.

I agree strongly with this suggestion. Intel is where it's at right now... much more bang for the buck IMHO. |
Agreed, but you left out an i5 2400. I had an amd phenom II x6 2.8 GHz and now I have an intel i5 2400 3.1 Ghz (4 core) and my pc runs a lot smoother applications are much snappier. not to mention it's a 95 watt processor versus a 130 watts or so. Easier to find CPU coolers, I'm using a thermaltake contac 30 which was 34.99 from newegg at the time. So intel > AMD right now, yes they are more expensive, yes, they are more power effecient, and yes, they are a bigger bang for your buck. I build computers and I recommend intel over AMD hands down. |

Pentium G630 + H61 motherboard.
Same price as his setup, perform way better in games. |

I did have a look at those processors but Warrn is right, I'm trying to stay under $500 with this build and those will easily add another $100. I'm actually leaning towards a slightly lesser graphics card just because i can lop off $45 after the rebate....
XFX HD-677X-ZNLC Radeon HD 6770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card ($90) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150540 and i found a better power supply option as well... Rosewill Green Series RG530-S12 530W Continuous @40°C, 80 PLUS Certified, Single 12V Rail, Active PFC "Compatible with Core i7,i5" Power Supply ($45) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182199 This drop in graphics card shouldn't really affect the performance of diablo right? Will I be able to max out the graphics with the 6770? Thanks for the comments everyone! |

Please swap out your Athlon II and AMD motherboard for a Intel Pentium G630 + H61 motherboard (like ASRock H61M/U3S3).
Otherwise, you have good hardware choices. |

FYI the folks saying the current amds are crap and then linking out i7's aren't giving you the full picture. The hex and oct core amds are fine in comparison to performance and such next to the i7s. Also you can confirm this yourself and actually find some budget help on danshardware. They have a best 2012 budget pc build there. |

Those people apparently have a hard time reading, and producing comparable items. He posted anthlon triple core and they didn't even give him comparable products. |

I'm running a dual core i3-2100 with 8GB ram and a 6850. I feel its a bit overkill for this game. However if you did the G630 with a budget H61 board and 4GB ram (1 stick or 2sticks of 2GB) with at least a 6770 or 7750/7770 you'll be fine. The G630 is super cheap right now, and this game does not seem taxing on more then a dual core.
all kidding aside, if you were going with your setup you initially posted. I think youll be fine. You can always upgrade to a FX4100/FX6100 down the road with most older AM3 boards (with a bios update) |
