I looked and looked for "the ultimate" build, but there really is none with diablo 3.
Having said that, I do believe i have found a playing style that is both enjoyable, balanced and #%!%s face.
Seriously give this a go, im critting for 2.7k @ early 30's with barely any yellows in nightmare mode. Its probabally not an ideal Boss build, but for farming ect, it works wonders.
Left Click - Poison Dart (Spined Dart Rune) - Mana gain is essential for inbetween the spamming of dire bat. Still does decent dmg on single target (And also a good alternative to spider jar, as the sound just pisses me off)
Right Click - Firebat (Dire Firebat) - MASSIVE damage when coupled with Soul Harvest.
1 - Spirit Walk (Honored Guest / Healing Journey if you are high enough ) - This skill is amazing, pure survability with a heal and a low cooldown.
2 - Soulharvest (Swallow your Soul) - THIS SKILL IS AMAZING. Highly intensifies your damage. You will crit big with this baby if you can get 5 souls proced. The rune for this isnt so important.
3 - Hex ( Hedge Magic ) - This one is not so important. The heal really helps you and your allies and the control helps in nightmare and beyond.
4 - Gargantuan (Restless Giant) - This one is more in handy for solo cases, however he is one tanky bastard that scales very well with gear even in group play.
Passives - Spiritual Attunement / Peirce the Veil / Spirit Vessel
Pierce the Veil + Spirit Vessel are immensely useful for the crit + survivability you need to enhance this build.
Seriously give this combo a try if you're stuck, it works well for me.

i'm still on normal but i should be getting to nightmare soon and i always play with a group. do you think i should switch from poison frogs / grasp build to more of dps / survivable build? i dont know how hard the mobs hit in the 30s, but i do see the error in my build (although extremely useful now) is that i have to get in melee range for SH and spam exploding frogs. you think gargantuan is still useful in group play or should i sub it for something else?
This is the build that i've been using to great success up to Act 2 nightmare so far.
give it a try you will love it.
You guys do realize you can use more then one ability from the same category correct? ie ZC + Acid Bomb, etc etc.
Currently this is what im running for Clearing through levels
And this for bosses
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/witch-doctor#acgTUQ!bWV!baZZZZ(Keep in mind Garg with that glyph is GREAT for boss fights)
And this is for when im completely on my own
This is my build, and it's pro:
I'm level 41 using plague of frogs (rain spell) and locust swarm that gives mana for each jump. The damage is pretty good for single targets with rain and AE with locust. I had to drop the 20% damage passive due to mana problems but I'm still hitting hard and it's very efficient. Hex is also a must have for nightmare and above. I also summon and sacrifice dogs for mana on boss fights, but poison dart is a must for bosses so I replace the frogs with that.
Direbats is king. Once you hit 40, get vision quest in there for maximum spammability.
Basically, Ive switched around somewhat too
runnign Big bad voodo with the mana return, and unbreakable graspe now too
Its rocking, so much dmg, and direbat spam when i pop Big bad voodo
