Caltrops useless on Hell?

I'm finding that Caltrops isn't doing much for me. When I use it on an elite pack, it rarely has an effect and on the things it does effect, random white mobs, they die before they reach it. Would it be better to substitute Caltrops for a Bat Companion? It takes me a while to whittle down elite mob health.

Slows are pretty useless against most elites in Hell, which ironically is when you really need them to work.

In some circumstances, torturous ground caltrops can be very useful in hell mode and provide a useful root against very fast modified elites.

If you have discipline to burn you can vault pre-emptively or employ use of evasive fire.

I seldom use evasive fire, but against fast moving champions it's actually quite good if you have some +discipline gear.

Preparation + surge + max discipline gear means no single melee mob can catch you. It's unfortunate that its single target damage is lackluster. If you combine surge with something like impact impale, you can lock down a small group of mobs chasing you for a very long time.
