Diablo® III

Unstable FPS, Desperate cry for help [SOLVED]

I am trying everything in my power to get this game to run smoothly.
Blizzard Tech Support hasn't answered me in three days since I have shot every one of their suggestions down. I have has this problem since the launch of this game.

The problem I am having is that I have a very unstable FPS and Major FPS drop in combat.
For example just idling in town the ingame FPS counter (Ctrl+R) reports that my FPS is fluctuating violently between 10fps - 50 fps. When I am in combat the fps drops to around 10-15 fps. I never have a stable 60 fps no matter what.

It seems when I am in combat the game is in slow motion but once all the enemies are dead and everything settles down the game speeds up. I also experience FPS drops when doing physic related activities in-game, such as destroying a wall or smashing a table.

My Computer exceeds the recommended specs for this game, my DxDiag will be posted below.

I am at my wits end here, Ive tried alot of things to get this game to work.

I'll try to sum up everything that i have tried to fix this.
Reinstall Diablo III
Updated Graphics card drivers and tried older drivers
Updated DirectX
Tried Gamebooster
Turned off trilinear buffering via d3prefs
Switch Hardware class to 1 in d3prefs
Turn on/off ingame vsync
Turn on/off Nvidia control panel vsync
Changed prerendered frames in Nvidia control panel settings to 1
Turned of Ambient Occlusion
Set the games graphics to low (no difference between high/low)
Changed the in-game sound settings to lowest
Set physics to low, low clutter, low fx
Tried changing the resolution
Tried full-screen/windowed/full-screen windowed\
Messed with FPS limit and Background FPS settings
Made sure CPU min power was set to 100%
Made sure my power plan was set correctly
Tried changing the Diablo 3 process affinity: 1 core, 2 cores, 1&3, random combinations
Tried changing the CPU priority to real time
Set Physx to be handled by the CPU/GPU
Installed the game on a non o/s drive
Installed the game on a SD card and thumbdrive
Tried just copying the MPQs to a different drive and linking them
Tried running in administrator mode/ Windows XP service pack 3 compatibility mode
Turning off Aero, Turning off Desktop composition
Tried forcing triple buffering and vsync via D3DOverrider
Ran my computer in selective start up mode to prevent any programs from causing this issue
Tried asking Blizzard tech support for help.

It's all serve sided lag.

I really doubt that, Even if I had latency issue, there would be no reason why my fps would fluctuate so violently just standing in one spot in town.

Well Diablo still in beta, so until they fix that. I have SSD so i just assume it's all server sided to make myself feel better.

Diablo III has been released. Its past May 15.

My friend who lives right under my room (Im on the 3rd floor, hes on the 2nd) has no problems with this game. We share the same ISP.

Same situation. I have a very well maintained custom computer. The game was running fine for a week. Then yesterday the FPS refuses to go above 20fps consistently. My roommate also plays and is having no issues.

Hey there Neurotic,

Just wanted to chime in and let ya know my symptoms are exactly the same as you. Tried all those 'fixes' as well to no avail. I am also on hold with support for two days now after a few troubleshooting replies back from them that I reported had no effect on my performance. Last I heard they asked for internal temps and I gave em them, no overheating issues at all. They even stated outright that I have a system more than capable to run the game.
I also experience erratic FPS ranging from 1 to 50 but seeing 50's more often than anything else as it jumps all over the place and that's standing still outside of town. In town hubs I never exceed 30-40 and as soon as I move they drop by 10-15. Also as soon an any enemy/physics effect/spell effects (regardless of whether or not they are 'new' or a 'fresh asset load') my fps drop to 5-15 and stay there until everything is dead or animation finishes running.
I've trudged through to Act III but simply can not play through the Siege of Bastion's Keep as the number of effects and enemies are just to great to reach any kind of smooth gameplay allowing reactions. I wipe, and then I revive to clear out what's left of the group to find a new group and wipe, revive, clear out what's left, new group, wipe... rinse repeat. This is unplayable imo and have reserved myself to wait to play until a patch fixes it.

Sorry to hear of your problem but kind of happy to see that my symptoms are not alone as everyone else seems to find some kind of workaround that works for them.

Edit: I also have had this issue since launch.

This is seriously ticking me off I have spent everyday trying to fix the game to the point to where I can play.

I was so stoked about this game. I even bought the collectors edition and the Steel Series mouse.

I check my support ticket constantly hoping they would provide me the answers I need.

I have searched extensively on these forums for a solution, have not even seen one response from a Blizzard Representative addressing this glaring issue.

Maybe if I titled this thread "Requesting a refund"/"Ive been hacked, give me my gear back"/
"Im stupid, how do I use an Aunthenticator"
Than maybe a Blizzard Rep would even look at this thread
This is how Blizzard rewards their dedicated fans, complete silence.

Looks like I'll be playing Path of Exile and Torchlight II.

I also feel like blizzard is ignoring the important issues and is only catering to the retards out(seeing as they're only replying to people that are acting like complete idiots) there. I am also a HUGE bliz fan, I own everyone of their biggest games and have always loved bliz for their response time to their fans for how large they are and their over all willingness to always talk about issues and tell us how they will be fixed but this game seems to be the one time they have stopped listening to their most dedicated of fans.

The pure amount of disappointment I feel from Blizzard with this game........... I'm about to call it quits with blizzard, if they are acting like this now, I can see them acting like this in the future. I'm getting ready to uninstall, sc2, WoW, and D3 and just say goodbye to a long time friend(blizzard) so I wont have to deal with this behavior in the future.

Have you tried deleting or renaming your D3Prefs.txt file and letting D3 recreate the file?

Sure I'll try this. So just rename it and then run D3 and it should auto download that file?

Or do I have to re-download D3?

I agree it feels like Blizzard is just ignoring the glaring issues and only helping those who have the most simplest problems that even I could answer. Maybe they should just let the users handle those and work on the things that really matter. I suggest bumping up the threads on this issue in hopes that we bury the retarded questions like how to add an authenticator to your account, there's already a FAQ/Page/Etc dedicated to this junk.

I have re-installed the game a couple times and made sure that I even deleted the D3pref and its folder as well as making sure my registry and computer has been wiped clean of Diablo III before re-installing. So yes.

Thanks for trying to help though.

I have the same problem!

Issue 1

I get that slow-mo effect all the time in game. Especially when there's battles going on. To me it looks like slow-mo but to my friends, it looks like I'm stutter-stepping.

It's ESPECIALLY bad when I'm in the sewers. The water on the ground for some reason takes a massive toll on my computer. Worst part is there's no way to tone down the water.

BLIZZARD PLZ LET US TURN WATER OFF OR SOMETHING BECAUSE IT HAS IT'S WAY WITH MY COMPUTER IN THE MOST UNFRIENDLY WAY POSSIBLE!

For instance when I was in act 2 with my friends, as we're running through the sewers, my champ is running in slow motion and my friends are teleporting a little further away from me every couple of seconds. I ask them how they're so fast and they say "it's not me. it's you." Turns out my champ is just stopping every fraction of a second and I'm literally not even running like I should be.

This happens every single time I'm in the sewers so the only thing I can conclude is that the water is at fault. And thus I must have my friends carry me through that area because no matter how much I want to be helpful.. I can't do anything. I can't even run from monsters because in inferno they're 20% faster by default apparently and I'm 20% slower while in the sewers.

Issue 2

Another thing that really bugs me is that there's noticeably a delay between when I activate skills and when they actually take effect. The most notable example is with Ray of Frost or Disintegrate.

-I tap the right click
-My champ raises his arm
-My champ lowers his arm
-Beam appears
-Beam disappears
^ in that order every time no matter what.

Issue 3

And lastly, I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but for some reason I see monsters running at me and I slow them right (usually with blizzard). I'm standing there attacking them counting down the seconds as they get closer and closer. I'm thinking to myself: "when they get within 5 feet of my champ, it's time to move so they don't touch me." BUT for some reason whenever they get to that 5 feet marker, they just teleport the rest of the way. Even if it's just a trash mob.

I don't know what it is but it's like the mobs are actually a little closer than my computer is showing me. And when the server says that they reach me, on my screen they've just hit the 5 foot marker. Then they just teleport the rest of the way because why not. This sort of lag makes it 100x harder to kite. I am relatively built. I have decent gear and I feel like if I could play the game without this delay I would actually be able to beat inferno.

But instead I have to try to preemptively dodge and kite (about .5-1 whole second in advance) or else the monster will just teleport to me and hit me before I can react. This paired with the fact that there's always a whole second delay between command and action makes it nearly impossible..

For all those people out there complaining about inferno being too hard:

TRY PLAYING INFERNO WITH A 1 SECOND DELAY TO EVERYTHING AND WHERE EVERY MONSTER IN THE GAME TELEPORTS TO YOU. OH AND WE CAN'T FORGET THE FACT THAT ACT 2 IS 100% UNBEATABLE DUE TO THE FACT THERE'S WATER ON THE GROUND IN THE SEWERS.

Try running Throttlestop. I have the same CPU in my laptop and it seems to have alleviated the slowdown that game physics causes me.

Watch your temps, make sure your fan settings are not on quiet mode, use at your own risk, etc.

Oh the other thing I did (at the same time, bad troubleshooter, bad) was change sound channels to 16. I will have to play around with it later and see if one or the other or both was in fact responsible for the improvement.

They are silent because they can not fix it. The problem is with the game engine, it is not optimized enough for modern hardware, if you look closely at the trailers to the game you can see fps drops even on Blizzard's own machines. The way the game syncs up with the server and maybe even their physics engine is sub par.

Heres what Technical support told me after leaving me on hold for 3 days.
Rakulaven:
Greetings John,

I want to apologize for the delay in response time as we have received a large increase in contacts due to the launch of Diablo 3 and other promotions. We (Blizzard and Nvidia) are looking into this issue, and we'd like to get some heat numbers from you so that the engineers will have a clearer picture of how things are breaking down. To check where your heat levels are at when the blackscreen occurs, please follow the below instructions. Once you have the number, please reply to this thread with the following info:

Operating System -
Video Card Model -
Driver Version -
Max Video Card Temperature -

Thanks!

Heat Monitoring Instructions

1. Download and install any Hardware monitoring program such as CPUID’s Hardware Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
2. Startup up the Hardware Monitoring program.
3. Expand the section you want to see (Video card in this case).
4. Start Diablo III in Windowed mode, and move the windows so you can see the Video card temperature while Diablo III is the active window.
5. While playing Diablo III pay close attention to the temperature of the video card.
6. Write down the max video card temperature.

Alternative: If your computer only blackscreens in Fullscreen mode, just start up the monitoring program before you begin playing, and after the blackscreen occurs alt-tab back to the monitoring program and check the maximum video card heat level.

**Note** Each video card has a different temperature threshold, and where one video card may black screen at 80c, another may black screen at 100c.

WORKAROUNDS
After you get the needed data, try switching on Vsync and dropping your "Foreground FPS" to 40 in the options menu. It doesn't work for everyone, but it may help some while the engineers work on the issue.

**Note: The system will mark this as resolved automatically, however please respond back to this ticket if you are still encountering the same issue so that we can further troubleshoot this for you! =]

This is what they finally told me. Its like they are not even reading what problem I have. I am not having a black screen issue. He also requested temps and a workaround but then promptly closed the ticket preventing me from responding. I couldnt open the ticket again so I made a new one, Heres my response.

I opened up a new ticket.
Neurotic:
My Previous Ticket was US26898556. The Customer Service Representative asked for information and suggested a workaround then closed and resolved the ticket without letting me reply. He also assumed that I was having a black screen problem.

I am not having a black screen issue.

I know it isnt a cooling problem, I run a gaming grade cooler on under my laptop at all times.
I ran my computer with diagnostic software while playing Diablo 3
Min temp was 31c Max temp was 35

What I did notice is that even though I set my CPU priority for realtime/higher Max cpu usage was at %25 max and only 2 gb of memory was used at max while playing.

I have tried as he suggested to run max foreground fps at 40 FPS and turn vsync on, this has not solved the issue.

I have made a post in the Support forums listing everything that I have tried to get this game to work.

I am going to attempt your work around but if you could explain to me like I'm 5, what you did with throttlestop. I just dont want to screw something up here. I got Throttlestop, CPU-Z and, GPU-Z standing by.

Thank you for your help.

Well, I'm no expert when it comes to these sorts of things either, so if you want a really good answer as to what exactly Throttlestop does vs what your computer does by default, you'll have to look around or hope that some real expert comes in this thread, but 'what i did' is extremely simple.

Download ThrottleStop 4.00 http://www.techinferno.com/downloads/?did=9
install
check 'set multiplier' at 26
hit turn on

4.1 is out now apparently, I don't know anything about the changes.

I had it on my computer from some other game I was trying to optimize (Crysis maybe, which runs smoother than D3), but I don't remember there being any other step to set it up. There are a lot of options and profiles you can set, and you can use it to underclock your cpu to save power, as well as let it run at higher speeds under more conditions (which is what I want it for).

If your 31C temp is your CPU temperature, I really doubt your computer is throttling your CPU because of temp (and I want to know what laptop cooler you're using, mine gets way hotter than that, but not hotter than I'm comfortable with). And although I would watch the CPU temperature display on Throttlestop, I wouldn't worry about overheating unless it got above 80C (fairly hot, not near melty hot though. I'm comfortable with occasionally hitting 80C). Maybe that's just the mobo temperature sensor though? I don't know what's causing it for my computer. My computer never runs that cool and I play other games just fine, but I definitely noticed that certain physics events killed my framerate, so I thought it might by improved by more horsepower.

But I don't really know why the will of a templar is straining a core i7 by knocking down some bits of wood anyways...

I love you, this program almost completely solves the problem. Thank you.
I can run everything on high. The frame-rate does fluctuates erratically around 60ish fps but never drops below 45 in combat. Max temp for my cores and GPU is reached 77C though while playing, but averaged around 73c at max.

My laptop
My laptop cooler is a Cooler Master Ergo Stand. Its a great cooler and keeps my laptop monitor eye level too.

Heres what I have set
Trottlestop
Set multiplier: 26

Nvida control panel
Max prerendered frames: 1
Multi-display/mixed-GPU aceleration: Single display performance
Power Management mode: Perfer Max performance
Triple Buffering On
Vertical Sync: On

D3prefs
Hardware class: 1
Trilinearfiltering disabled

Ingame:
Ticked foreground fps to 70
Disabled vysync
Everything set to high elsewhere

Still testing this though. If there is any redundant setting I have made someone please tell me.

i was having this issue too. When Blizzard got around to reading my ticket they told me the MY problem was that i had Avast running. They said Avast specifically had slowed the game down for people in beta testing. So since i have 3 other anti virus programs i just uninstalled Avast and not the game runs fine for me.

The only problem i have now is that i get disconnected from the servers ever 2 minutes
