Does anyone else notice the Blood ritual drawback lacking any ability to bite you in the !@#?

I thought that I would notice the life cost but I can spam my mp down to the bottom and my hp does not drop by any noticeable amount. If I take my templar follower with me then my HP remains max at the end of spamming the firebats spell or hitting both the dog and gargantuan summons back to back. just saying this seems to take some of the strategy element away if this passive ends up being a straight mana reduction.

You might want to edit your title to be "Blood Ritual a bit Unbalanced". It currently sounds more like you're talking about the class issues in general.

I would like to point out that you need a bit of VIT for that to happen but the situation is much worse than you thought after you leave normal. It's actually a mana reduction AND strong passive health regen! However, if it actually reduced survivability, would you use it for a paltry little 15% mana reduction? It'd need a serious buff on the mana end of the equation to be worth giving up survivability and a passive slot for.

Keep in mind it has to compete with +20% max mana and 1% mana regen/second (easily over 85/sec).
