Diablo® III

Alienware M17x R1 Micro-stutter

Hello everyone,
From day one I've had the glitchy micro-stuttering problem that countless people have reported on these forums and forums across the internet. The stutter is much worse in combat situations than in town or on the menu screen, but the stutter is clearly noticeable even in these places. It seems like I've tried every quick fix out there. Setting the hardware class to 1, tinkering with every combination of in-game video settings, rolling back my GPU drivers, disabling SLI (I have 2x nvidia gtx 260m's, with core 2 duo processors at 2.8 GHz), disabling hybrid graphics & integrated graphics in my bios, ensured it isn't a router/modem/power sharing issue, and made sure that I wasn't accidentally in stealth mode (lol). I also called in to tech support and filed a ticket, but I was just referred here since the tech couldn't think of anything that I hadn't already tried. I play games such as Battlefield 3 flawlessly, so I'm not sure what to do. I will attach my DxDiag below. I really appreciate any help or new information I find, it's bad enough I waited a decade for this game!

Regards,
A Disappointed Diablo Fan

I really hope so, it sucks to wait a decade for a game that you can't even play on a high-end gaming laptop. I expect these issues time to time with high-performance laptops, but when you can run BF3 flawlessly, a game like this should be a walk in the park.

Just out of curiosity, is your power adapter plugged in when you have this problem? I don't know why... But every Alienware I've dealt with (including my current one) down clocks the video card when not plugged in. Doesn't do it with every game, but it does it with some. There's an nvidia app you can get to control this, that's not part of the nvidia control panel.

Yes, it's always plugged in.

This happened with my RoG Asus as well. Although it may have been the result of it being re-certified and that I bought it for 1800$ off...

Same problems. I cringe everytime I think about joining a full game.

This is like buying a $60 steak dinner and then waiting a month for them to cook it. Why did they advertise this meal if it was going to take a month to dethaw and cook? In that same analogy, if someone offered to either refund you or have you wait a month for it work, what would you choose?

I grill my own steak. Regardless, analogy accepted.

This steak is completely uncooked.

I have had same issues as you but with a much more powerful desktop. I turned off HyperThreading in the BIOS and it solved my issues not only with this game but several other like BF3 as well. Might make a difference for you might not...but worth a try. Also try the NVidia setting of prerendered frames to 0.

The steak is a lie.

Known issue with your laptop and Nvidia drivers. Also because of the Hybred Graphics setup those laptops use there are BIOS settings that need to be tuned so the laptop always uses the card you want instead of dropping down to the internal graphics to save on power.

Dig around the forum I will link and you will find a ton of useful info. Or join and ask for help. This site helped me unbrick my ex's M17xR1 after she failed a BIOS update as well as get the unit to play D3 without stutter. I would try to help more but it gets pretty in depth with a lot of variables. It better for you to just go there and dig in.

Did a little digging and this is what I did to fix the stutter on her laptop.

Ok, guys here's a the file you need to install this driver on the M17x (R1) with the 2xx series nVIDIA cards.
Thanks to crzychinook for testing these on the 260M cards too!

Follow these steps:

First of all uninstall your current nVIDIA display drivers.
Reboot in Safe Mode (repeatedly press the F8 key after the BIOS prompt and choose Safe Mode)
Run your favorite registry cleaner (I personally use CCleaner), backup your registry first just in case and choose to clean your registry to remove any remnants of the old driver (you might need to run it a couple of times until there's nothing to remove).
Reboot one more time.
Download the 301.42 nVIDIA drivers to your Desktop(or wherever you want)
Double click and let them extract the files in the default directory (C:\NVIDIA)
Press Cancel when it starts checking for hardware compatibility
Download my attached archive and extract the file
Cut/copy it and paste in "C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\301.42\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver"
And replace original file
Go back to the "International" folder and run setup.exe
Continue performing normal installation steps, choosing Custom(Advanced)>Next>and check Perform a clean installation>Next and at the windows prompt choose Install...anyway
Reboot when prompted and voila
Don't forget to reenable SLi in nVIDIA Control Panel and reboot your system
Enjoy!

Note for M17x (R1) users:
-Don't forget to turn off PCIe Gen2 in BIOS under Advanced > Graphic Settings.

Please make sure you correctly followed the steps above before asking questions.

I am a member of notebookreviews and they haven't been able to offer any new advice yet. I've tried those new drivers and they made D3 worse if anything, and I've rolled them back to a stable driver version as well. My bios are also in optimal settings. I know this computer quite well as I've had these "types" of issues with other games, but after 10 minutes of trouble-shooting I was able to resolve those issues. This is clearly on Blizzard's end.

Hyperthreading turned off and maximum pre-rendered frames set to 0 to no avail. thanks though, it's rare I hear new suggestions regarding this issue -_-

One of the most notice improvements for me was Hardware 1 in d3prefs and Shadows Medium (so they don't look like complete crap).

This helps the stutter a little, if you don't mind not being able to see any shield auras around players or mobs, and have some mobs randomly disappear from view.

...I mind this.

I've tried changing HardwareClass to 1, and tried all video settings on low already if you read my post, even though I should be able to run 30 Diablo clients simultaneously while on all high settings.
