You know...some people refuse to use AH, like me, the BS an JC is for those people. I'm almost in the same "mind-set" as you when it comes to the AH. I'll sell items on it for gold, and I've gotten a couple items from it for my lvl 55 Wiz that I bought with gold I made in game. I will Not, however, spend "Real Money" on the AH even when it becomes available for us here in the USA to do so. I "might" try to sell some high end items for real money IF I find anything I know would sell for real cash. Unless I find something like that though, unless I find something worth selling for real money, I'll never use the real money part of the AC. I don't mind spending gold I make in game on the AC, but I just can't justify spending my hard earned "Real Cash" on items I can either find through farming or buy with enough gold I can make in game. IF I do manage to sell anything for "Real Cash" or "Blizzard Bucks" I'll probably use that "real money" to buy items from the RMAH. I already spent $60 buying the game and until the expansions start rolling out and I have to buy them (maybe I'll be able to buy them with Blizzard Bucks from the RMAH?) I don't think I'll be spending anymore Real Money. I just can't bring my-self to spend even more real money just to buy a item I can find in game with enough farming/effort.

The reason crafting weapons is a bad idea is because all of the Blacksmith plans are for ilvl 62 items that cannot attain the highest level affixes that are needed to make them desirable.
For example, if you search for the AH for Magic 1H Maces, the top DPS is a Grim Demolisher of Death with 1136 DPS. The top Crag Hammer is a Savage Crag Hammer of Malice 37 pages down with 872 DPS. You would need to craft an almost perfect ilvl 62 to compete with a very average ilvl 63. At least until 1.0.3 hits, the only way to find an ilvl 63 weapon is by farming Inferno A3+. |
Yep, the problem with weapons is that the difference between ilvl 62 and 63 is pretty big, plus you need two specific affixes (+daamge and +%damage) to get a high dps weapon. You rolled 5 weapons. Think about how many rare/magic weapons you come across farming. My guess is its a lot more than 5, which is why you've seen much better weapons.

I have all five classes covered. I began grinding four of them on the day that the game dropped here in the USA. I have played all three of the previous games of Diablo with Diablo I being the one that received the greatest amount of my attention.
My convention for the beginning of DIII was to explore each class' worthiness for supporting the grinding of it to cap. I decided on two classes: a DH and a Wiz. My son, who has about the same background with Diablo is grinding the Wiz. We began leveling each of the artisans as soon as we had acquired the needed mats and gold to accomplish each level. When we came to the point where the mats required were beyond our toon's levels, we bought those items from here because the AH doesn't allow any artisan mats to be purchased through it. Both of us know and accept that this game series has always been about gear first, class second. So, that knowledge convention is where we started and by trolling the threads on the forums plus searching the AH we came to see that our perception was valid. With all of the above statements in mind, we began crafting jewels as that venue was the one that we knew would get us into some decent stats on socketed armor, weapons or jewelry which we either found as drops or by trading/purchasing. Having said all of that, here's our take on the subject of crafting: The convention of viewing what this game offers from the position of logic that we all have to use to live our individual real lives is not acceptable. This game is a third person, dungeons & dragon themed, rpg/muliti-player, in the simplest terms. Therefore, having played D & D from when it first dropped into the world, on many occasions, the thought of not viewing any of the game series from that position was a horrible mistake. D & D in it's root form required the players to visualize all that happened while playing it. The roll of the dice was where the amount of luck that I player was 'imbued' with was either a good thing or a bad thing - such is Life! However, no matter what the roll came to be the fantasy was the responsibility of each player AND the Dungeon Master. REASON FOR THIS POST: the adventuring in any game is supposed to be fun and offer the player(s) the chance to do something that can't be realized in real life. CONCLUSION: we believe that turning our game play experiences into an empirical data collection scenario is a bit too OCD. We are NOT saying that being partially motivated to take that mindset is wrong. What we ARE asking is: where is the fun in being able to predict what one can expect for all or a majority of the stats when crafting? Plus, this is A GAME peeps and even though all of US have to spend time out of our lives to "escape" into it and have fun, it is not about trying to make that into something that it does not accomplish, or better yet, becoming stressed out over how much gold or mats go into any crafting scenario. We understand that there is some flaws in the game as far as what the crafting code is allowing. We are keeping a running log that is a list of what we feel needs the attention of the devs. We will use that list to post a detailed request addressed to the devs at some point in the near future. This post is not a flame-job directed toward anyone. It is just a chance for a 60yr. old man and his 30yr old son to share what we feel is important or germane to the crafting part of this wonderful game. WE agree that there is a lot of room for improvement and we believe that it is our right to make the issues known to not only the devs but also to other players. To quote a line of lyrics from a song by Robin Trower; "....it's only money...and money can't satisfy." Or, how about this one that I heard many times from a Jedi guildmate while in an instance in Star Wars Galaxies, "man, it's only a game. Shutup and die. Ya payed to clone close to here so do it and then come on back." |

I also bought an exalted grand strike wand plan today for about 2 million and crafted a couple, so i ended up spending near 3 million for nothing. I noticed the huge disparity in damage between the AH wands and i found out that the ilvl of the strike wand is only 62, instead of the top tier (ilvl 63), which is too low to reach any high end damage. Blizzard is a complete !@#$ing pile of fail, they made blacksmithing COMPLETELY useless. It doesn't seem like they are buffing the ilvl of these items next patch either. They should issue a gold refund for everyone who wasted money because of their stupid mistakes.

As I do like where this thread is going. I want you guys to try a experiment.
Get some dice. (make it 6 dice) And now roll all of them. How often will you get all of them landing on 6 in one roll? (very rarely). Now imagine a 100sided dice. Obviously no one will be willing to craft since it's so expensive. But maybe if the prices got nerfed abit, more people would be willing to take the risk. Plus its would be like winning the lottery if you did get a nearly-perfectly rolled item. |
As I do like where this thread is going. I want you guys to try a experiment. I don't think you understand my argument, you CAN'T get a high dps weapon. It's NOT possible. You are crafting ilvl 62 weapons. They are not allowed to get that high of a dps. The top tier is ilvl 63 |
As I do like where this thread is going. I want you guys to try a experiment. The item damage itself is capped so even if you rolled 6 "100" sided dice, you would still get crap. |
the hightest craftable weapon is ilvl 62 while the highest drop is ilvl63 (same applies for armor) crafting is always a tier below the best drop and most likely cannt get the "best" affix

As I do like where this thread is going. I want you guys to try a experiment. Please understand the real problem before you try to throw around overused math examples. Crafted weapons have a lower ilvl than the top tier equipment of the game, which means that it is IMPOSSIBLE for weapons crafted by the blacksmith to be as good as anything higher than Act2 inferno. THAT is the problem, not the RNG crap, random is random, but no matter how many times you roll that 6 sided dice, its not going to say '7' and it needs to be able to be a '7' in order for the equipment to have any value once you reach inferno. |

Just did the same with 5 stat Sword. Crafted 4 and 3 had the impressive dps of 2xx, 1 with 5xx!

You know...some people refuse to use AH, like me... What? |
so its not just me then...
its beyond stupid that crafting system! 20k gold to make a gem that sells for 300gold????? 170k to craft a bow that would possibly, only if, in rare case with good rolls sell for 20k and be completely utter **** at the time and place where you got to craft it at the first place! Its a gold sink for the fools! Stay away from it till the make it 0 gold and only material |

spent 6m so far trying crafting a decent ceremonial knife with 6 properties and best I got was a 750DPS but had but no intelligence, oh well.
Crafting is a money sink that doesn't pay and keeps you playing longer. Exactly Blizzards intent.
y would blizzard allow people to just buy recipes and craft the best weapons in the game? people stuck in act 1 and 2 actually have to do work to get better weapons not just buy a recipe and hope for the best to progress to act 3.

I crafted 4 5-slot ceremonial knives. 3 of them I ended up salvaging, the 4th one went for a million on the auction house. It was almost a perfect roll, though, mana regen, life on hit, int, +damage, and a socket. Still, it was less than 800 DPS which means I was lucky to get even 1m for it.
