Ever since Saturday (June 23), I have been getting network lag and lag spikes. This only happens in Diablo III. Every other online game I played (like CS 1.6, TF2, BF2, etc) had no lag. I did speedtests and all were fine (ping was low, no packet loss; also I used speetest, pingtest, dslreports, and verizon's official speed test for all the tests). So, only Diablo III seems to lag for me (the internet in general is fine outside of D3).
When the game lags, there is about a 1-5 second delay when I press an ability, and when it actually happens or takes effect (I see my character do the attack animation, but the actual effect doesn't occur until 1-5 seconds later). Also, sometimes I get lag spikes where I can move my character but everything is frozen. The monsters don't move, my follower doesn't move, etc. I can still move my character. If I try to do anything (like use any attacks), my character does the animation for it but the effect doesn't occur. If I try to pick up any items, my character moves to the item but doesn't actually pick up the item (it still shows being on the ground). Usually, after about 5 seconds of that type of lag (where I can move my character but everything else is frozen), everything catches up or "rubber bands". So that's how lag looks for me, if it helps. Bread *Windows Vista (64 bit) *Just Windows Firewall (I have it set to allow Diablo III and all Blizzard related stuff). It's mostly set to the default settings. *D-Link DFE-530TX+ PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (Rev. F) The driver version is the latest (which is 3.69 for Vista 64 bit) according to the official d-link site (the driver date is 5/16/2007 but I couldn't find any new drivers on the official site or on windows update for Vista 64, the latest seems to be 3.69). *Router: Model Name: ActionTec MI424-WR Hardware Version: D *Modem - It seems for Verizon FIOS, there isn't a modem (at least a typical modem) but there is a Optical Network Terminal (which is located outside) that seems to connect directly to the router inside (the ONT is the default one installed and Coax cable is used for the connection). *Verizon FIOS *Wired (the computer is connected by an ethernet cable directly to the router) *California, USA *Traceroute (note, after 10, it just kept requesting time out. According to the support article, it's supposed to do that right? Anyway, I set it to 11 hops because of that [after 10 hops, they all timed out the same]): (I did trace routes multiple times to these IPs, I picked one with a noticeable high MS to show.) (Here's trace route to the IP given in the support article "12.129.209.68") I found when using netstat, other IPs are connected to that are not listed in the support article. (I find I usually am connected to "12.130.244.193" whenever I log onto Diablo III ). This IP is connected whenever I log onto Diablo III battle.net (US server) (this IPs seem to be the battle.net server itself for D3): Whenever in a game, a new IP is added (I'm not sure exactly but I guess this is the IP of the game or game instance? Whenever I join/create a game, I am connected to a new IP and the IP is always different every new game): The IP is always different but points to the same hosts generally: I posted this in another thread: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5911942093?page=7#133 Basically, some games I get no lag at all. Sometimes I get a laggy game (and it stays lagging for 30 mins), then I exit the game and immediately start a new game. That new game does not lag at all (I tried staying in it for 45 mins to check if it will eventually lag, and it didn't). I exited that game, and immediately started a new game. That new game lagged immediately (and again, I tried testing it by staying in the game for 30 mins to see if it would stay laggy, and it did). It seems (though it is a small sample size + it may just only be me) that some games lag while others do not. If I end up in a game that does lag, it stays laggy. If I end up in a game that is not laggy, it stays not laggy and smooth overall. (Also, all tests were done in games I created with no other players; so technically single player tests.) I found that (at least for me), whenever I connect Diablo III US battle.net, I am connected to this IP "12.130.244.193". I checked using the "netstat" command in command prompt. When I create a new game, I get a second IP that also starts with 12.130.###.###. This IP only appears when I am in actual game of Diablo III (not while I am in a lobby or viewing the AH, for example). That second IP is always different. Here are a few examples of IPs I am connected (checked via netstat) to when I created a game: 12.130.247.129 12.130.245.171 12.130.246.134 Edit - I guess for those of you lagging too (network lag like I described above), does it sometime happens only in certain games and not others? It takes me about 10 games played to get a game where I don't lag sometimes. I'm not sure if it's just me that experiences these weird inconsistencies (a lot of games lag but sometimes I occasionally get a game that doesn't lag at all) but if you do, please post. Edit 2 - These are findings from another poster that may help determine the problem: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5837015026 Anyway, I'll try doing a few more tests to see if any of the above can be reproduced. Overall, it seems there's an IP (a second IP that is always random) whenever a game is created or joined. Is that the IP of the game instance, and (if so) is it the main source of information transfer between client and server (for gameplay in Diablo III that is)? Edit 3 - Okay, it seems the destination doesn't matter. I got two games where 1 lagged "a bit" but the other lagged a lot and both had the same destination (both were "mdf001c7613r0003-gig-12-1.lax1.attens.net [12.129.193.254]"). I tried checking the routes in between and they were mostly the same. Edit 4 - Okay, I did one game where it kind of lag (but it was noticeable), felt like 200ms with spikes of 1000 ms occasionally. Then I did two games where it definitely lag, felt like 200 ms throughout with spikes of 2000+ ms frequently. Then I had a game where I did not lag at all. Felt like 50 ms throughout. Again, these games were played within the same time frame (once I exited a game, I immediately started a new game to check if it lagged or not). So I can confirm that there still seems to be some weird "some games lag while others game do not lag" thing going on. I am doing trace routes and keeping track of all the IPs of games that do lag and games that do not lag. Edit 5 - Right after I left the non-laggy game, I immediately created a new game. This game was really laggy. So, another confirmation that it seems some games are laggy while others aren't (for some reason). So it doesn't seem to be due to the time frame (like peak hours or not) but rather the games (which connect you to certain IPs).

Okay, I tested the game several times all within relatively an hour.
I did a log. I got 8 games that lagged (200 milisecond delays, + spikes of up to 3-5 seconds or more frequently) and I got 6 games of non-laggy games (where it felt like 50-100 ms or under throughout the entire game). I got 1 game where it felt like 100 ms and had a few spikes of 300 ms or higher (so it was middle lag). I had mostly 2-3 laggy games in a row, then 1 non-laggy game. On one occasion, I had 3-4 games of non-laggy games in a row. I tested from around 4:10 PM to 5:26 PM (so, just over an hour). What I did for all of the games is play, notice if there is any lag, then go through the area (core of crater) and go to town. In town, I do a few attacks to check if lag is still there (or in non-laggy games, if game is still non-laggy). Then, I press exit to bring up the menu and pause the game. I go to command prompt, do a netstat, check the IP of the game, do a trace route on that IP. After doing that, I go back to the game, unpause it, and check to see if stayed laggy or non-laggy. I do attacks and spells for about 1 minute or more to see if the lag is there. Once it's done, I alt tab back again and note if the game had any inconsistent results (none had inconsistent results - If I got into a laggy game, it stayed laggy and vice versa). Then, I go back to the game and test for about 20 more seconds to see if there is lag or not. I immediately exit the game and start a new one and check to see if that game lags. So that's how I did the testing. I even did a log in case it might help (note, for the first few entries, I didn't take note of laggy games. I did netstats and trace routes of them but I didn't write them in the log [since I already did the traceroute and kept the txt files for them already]). For the first few entries, I had 2-3 laggy games in a row before encountering a non-laggy game. Here is my log I wrote (it started from 1 and ended at 15, any entry omitted [which again, the first few entries, were laggy games]: (Also, this is a very informal log but it describes what I did for the testing ; also the formatting is inconsistent but the next time I do a test and a log, I'll make sure to keep the formatting consistent) For all games, I play the game, check if there is lag or no lag, then after clearing I can post all the trace routes I did for all the IPs (of the game instances?) if that helps too. I will try to compare the routes for all the IPs to see if there is anything interesting. Anyone else encounter games where some games don't lag but others do lag? Edit - Again, the lag only has affected Diablo III for me. No other games lag (+ speed tests were fine, no packet loss, etc). It just started Saturday for me.

Thanks for all of the detailed information. Here's a few suggestions: 1. Make sure that Vista is running on the most current service pack version. It should be service pack 2. 2. I checked the Dlink site and they actually have a driver for your network card that is from 2010. You should try to update to that one. Here's the link: http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DFE-530TX%2b&tab=3 Once there just click on drivers, and it should be the first available download that shows up. 3. Make sure that the router is running on the most current firmware version. Here's a link where that can be found: http://www.actiontec.com/support/ Once there, check under the Wireless routers, DSL Modems & Gateways drop down menu for MI424-WR. You'll need to know the revision version in order to get to the correct download. I also noticed a MI424-WR on their site that says for Verizon Fios, so that's most likely the one you have. If the router was provided by Verizon, you might want to contact them for assistance with the update. 4. Make sure that the ports that Diablo III uses are open in the router firewall. Here's a link that will help with that: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Actiontec/MI-424-WR/Diablo_III.htm 5. The three tracerts that you posted look fine. Except in the first one, there appears to be some data loss on line 5. This server appears to be a peering partner server that Verizon uses. It's not in our network, so you would have to contact Verizon to have it looked into. I didn't notice any issues in the second tracert, but the third one shows some more data loss in lines 3 and 4. Both of which are still in the Verizon network. This would also be something for Verizon to look into. |

Hi Dankorii,
Just wondering, is all that info going to the developers to look at? I went through a couple tickets with customer support, checked out the knowledge base articles, and things seem like they're configured okay on my end. But... Ever since Saturday (June 23), I have been getting network lag and lag spikes. This only happens in Diablo III. Every other online game I played (like CS 1.6, TF2, BF2, etc) had no lag. ...this has been my experience too. Any friends I've played with have complained about lag and rubber banding. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that you're trying to help and that lag could very well be caused on the customer's end. It's just that it's a pretty widespread complaint and it seems like many people are saying it's specific to D3. I'm wondering if it's being looked into and if there's a rough ETA for a fix. Thanks. |
|
@Dankorii - Thanks for the reply :). I'll look into it and see if Verizon can help or identify the problem.
@Bryan - Have you been getting lag since Saturday too? Where are you from and what ISP do you use? Also, do you have cases where some games lag and some other games do not lag? (For me, there have been more laggy games than non-laggy games. Though after several attempts [leaving and creating games], I do end up in a non-laggy game sometimes.)

@Bryan - Have you been getting lag since Saturday too? Where are you from and what ISP do you use? Also, do you have cases where some games lag and some other games do not lag? It isn't just you, there are about fifteen different posts about lag/rubberbanding/getting kicked from the server/unable to update/unable to dl/unable to use shortcuts since the recent patch and a little before that even. Hopefully they are workin' on it, or at least investigating the issues. |
|
|
Dank - Do I need to open the just the outgoing ports or do I also need to do the same for incoming ports?
I have the same router but it uses port triggering and I can select the setting for outgoing and incoming port traffic. |

Yea...I get it can take a while to troubleshoot these issues, just looking for some communication on it. Seems like no one is allowed to talk about lag or connectivity issues on Blizzard's end. I'd be content with a "we recognize the issue and are working on it." Bread: Canada/Shaw. I do get some games that lag horribly and some that are not so bad. All it takes sometimes is to leave the existing game and immediately resume another. Generally I can't get around the rubberbanding issues though. |
|
|
Well I did everything suggested and it didn't help at all. Me and another fella I met in general chat have been corresponding since we have the same issue in this thread. We have been literally trying any and everything. There would be no way in Hell I could attempt to play a hardcore character with this rubberbanding going on. I get anywhere from 30-60 latency and usually about 120-140fps. I know this is not on my end.
I guess I can try and contact Verizon as well. |

I'm wondering if it's being looked into and if there's a rough ETA for a fix. Yes, the rubberbanding and latency issues are being looked into. I don't want for you guys to think that we are completely ruling out the possibility that the issue could potentially be on our end. However, I want you guys to keep in mind that we have to make sure that everything on the customer's end is up to date and working as intended before we can even start looking at our end. To be honest, I've been lucky and haven't really experienced any latency issues while playing Diablo III. I did see a little bit of rubberbanding, but it was something that I barely even noticed and didn't really affect my game play. Now, just because myself and a lot of my co-workers are not experiencing the issue doesn't mean that there isn't an issue, but we do have to rule out any factors on the customers' end that could be contributing to the issue. ________________________________________________ Support Information Administrator If you can't find a solution to your issue, feel free to contact a Support Representative directly for further assistance. Do I need to open the just the outgoing ports or do I also need to do the same for incoming ports? I would say do both. Doing so would pretty much ensure that none of those ports will be restricted by the router's firewall when data is being sent back and forth. ________________________________________________ Support Information Administrator If you can't find a solution to your issue, feel free to contact a Support Representative directly for further assistance. D3 has been working fine for me until Tues afternoon. While I was playing my roomate accidentlu unplugged our modem and router. Ever since then I have been laggin non stop, my latency never going under 100ms and spiking upwards of 1500ms. I am fine until I start fighting and especially against elite packs is when I get the most lag. Without fail I engage an elite pack and I get 1500-2000ms and end up dieing. It is has made playing impossible. I am at my wits end, I have made sure all ports are opened set my computer as the DMZ for the router have checked my hardware to make sure drivers are up to date, have loaded the newest firmware for the router. I have even done speed tests online and have gotten 20m/s. MY problem only seems to be with Blizzard products (have similar issues in WOW but not as bad as in D3). I have no idea what else to do but stop playing : (

Using a program such as 3D Traceroute may help us figure out the cause of the connection issue as it will take a trace route over time, rather than only for a single moment. Any spike in latency that occurs, should be displayed in the graph. You’ll want to keep 3D Traceroute running while you play and/or until you experience a latency issue in-game. You can then go back and check the 3D graph to see where any spikes might have occurred. 3D Traceroute can be downloaded here. Here’s what you need to do once 3D Traceroute has been downloaded and launched: 1. Enter the following information in the “Target” field located in the top left hand corner: 12.129.209.68 2. Click on the green “Trace” button located to the right of the “Target” filed to start the trace. ***You may want to watch 3D Traceroute for a few minutes to get an idea of what it actually does.*** 3D Traceroute tips: There are a few different views you may find useful, a "3D graph" and the "as List". The "as List" view will have a minimum, maximum, and average latency time for each hop as a numerical representation of the graph. It will also display the total data loss per hop, which is useful in locating a potential connection problem. The graph angle can be adjusted, but it should pretty much be left at default unless we request otherwise. Any spikes are just that, lag spikes, and any gaps represent data loss or timed out requests for data. A couple small spikes may be normal, but we should not see any gaps on a good connection. To save the Trace information: 1. Click on “Tools” located in the upper right hand corner and click on “Save Trace”. 2. Select “JPEG” under the picture tab, and then click on “Save”. 3. Next, click on the “Data” tab 4. Ensure that “Text” is selected, and click on “Save”. ***Save the files somewhere that is easy for you to find them, such as the Desktop or My Documents. Then save the pictures on a site like http://photobucket.com/ and provide the link so I can take a look.*** ________________________________________________ Support Information Administrator If you can't find a solution to your issue, feel free to contact a Support Representative directly for further assistance. Dankori,
That tool is just plain cool. Nice! I'm going to run this on my box and see what's up. So far I've been relying on scripts I wrote and a modified version of ping.c designed to output to XML instead of plaintext. Thank you for being open to look at traceroutes, and for pointing me (us) to such a cool tool. |
