The boss drops in Diablo 2

This thread's purpose is to either prove or disprove the fact that in Diablo 2, top-end items dropped consistently. So, I've made a MF Sorceress with extremely good Magic Find gear. Her MF is 483%. This MF is above average, but is not the highest possible.

I'll be killing Andariel, Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal. The reason I am not killing Duriel, is because of the tediousness of finding him, and because he was not farmed by a lot of people.

My gear:

My stats:
http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff491/adam4eva/Diablo/MyMF.png

Here are pictures of the drops on each kill. I will separate the drops into three categories. These categories include "hardly worth anything," "kinda worth something," and "worth a lot." If an item has no value, it will not be listed.

The Conclusion:

Diablo 2 bosses did indeed drop a lot of rares, unique, and set items. The difference, was that the extremely good and high priced items, drop extremely rarely even with my MF. Your memory of you getting better items far more often, is just an allusion. The items you received were just more varied in text color.

In Diablo 2, top-end items dropped consistently - False

Anecdotal evidence with a poor sample size; nothing more. Your definition of "good" is subjective and questionable.

I never said that I was done. The chance of me deleting something on accident in the process, was rather high. I didn't want to take that chance.

What I consider good, is something that is useful to a particular spec. Meaning it gives some decent bonuses to their damage and/or defenses.

http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff491/adam4eva/Diablo/Baditem.png
That is an item I would consider bad. It brings very little to the table to be considered useful.

http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff491/adam4eva/Diablo/Hardlyworthanythingitem.png
Is an item that I would label "hardly worth anything." It provides 1 to all Barbarian skills, while having some minor life on hit.

Their idea of faster is construed. It simply seems faster because you can farm all 4 major bosses you mentioned in one game. There is no lead up to them, no need for 5 Nephalem valor and the game was rather easy so you could actually use mf gear and deal massive damage. Not to mention half of these diablo 2 fanboys used map hack before blizzard really cracked down on it; therefore cutting out the time used searching for the next dungeon entrance and enhancing speed.

Thank you for this post it seems someone actually put original thought into a post and decided to try and back up their idea with actual statistical data( albeit could be a larger sample size plus I would show the amount of time it takes to do a run, what act are you farming and so on) hopefully more people on these forums can actually attempt at a contribution to diablo 3 forums other than the multitude of crying and complaining that we normally see.

Yep. The boss drops in diablo 2 are far more efficient than anything you can do in diablo 3. Regardless of there value.

I started a hardcore Diablo 2 barb about 2 weeks ago. I did Andy runs on normal to level and gear up a bit. Ended up with a few set items, some good legendaries that I'm using, and a bunch of great rares.

Can't say the same for Diablo 3.

Almost have my third level 60. I have found two low level legendaries, two crafting plans (low level), and ZERO set pieces.

By now in D2, I would have found substantially more set and unique pieces to either use or trade.

could this be said about what you QQ'ers feel about d3 drops?

what people forget to mentions is that their Diablo 2 experience is based on 10 years of game play. How can you even attempt to compare 10 years to only 2+ months?

You don't consider chance guards good? Sure, it doesn't sell for buckets, but its something you'll use and its interesting.

Heck, you saw uniques, period.

Compare to D3...

I saw a skullder's ire there too, which would also get used. Its not about market value to me, its about whether I would use it or not. Or create a toon to use it.

And I just looked at 4 random pictures! Much better loot than D3 already, just from that sample size!

Edit: Also, only 483% mf? Skimping a bit there, aren't you? 1000% mf or it doesn't count.

It was only a 25% MF. Which is the lowest it goes, hardly worth anything.

The Conclusion:

Diablo 2 bosses did indeed drop more rares, unique, and set items than any monster in Diablo 3. The difference, was that the extremely good and high priced items, drop just as rarely as they currently do in Diablo 3. Your memory of you getting better items far more often, is just an allusion. The items you received were just more varied in text color.

The difference is that extremely good and high priced items were not necessary to successfully complete the game. You have to adjust your definition of what an extremely good item is for Diablo 2 just for the simple fact that you could beat hell difficulty using items found in normal and nightmare difficulty. So in all actuality, the items you found in Diablo 2 were useful to more people with higher availability.

Now I understand that min/max is a fun meta game, and Diablo 2 definitely catered to this crowd, however, it was not a necessary aspect of its gameplay. Diablo 3 requires you to min/max to even think about making progress in the endgame, and I think this is where a lot of people are getting upset.

Ah, i just looked at the picture of the drop on the ground with gold chain gloves, it wasn't even id'ed yet. Would've still used it until i got a better one, probably =P

You are comparing a 12 year old economy to a 2 month old economy, that's the problem. If D2 were 2 months old you'd be stupid rich doing those. D3 doesn't matter if you're end game right now, you can be poor as hell.

It would have taken too long to put pics up of each and every item that I got. >.>

comparing runs in diablo 2 that take all of 2 minutes to drops in diablo 3 that take 30-60 minutes to complete lol

I wasn't comparing boss drops specifically. I was just showing evidence that drops in D2, weren't as amazing as people believed.

I could MF for an hour in full D2 games and I'd be guaranteed at least SOMETHING that could sell.

You can do that in Diablo 3. They may not be top tier items, but you can sell the items you find.

I needed some inventory space. D:

I guess I could socket my helm, wep, and chest with an Ist rune... But to keep the drops consistent, I won't change anything until after I'm done gathering info.
