Banning Linux Users For Using Linux...Really?

lol at all the botters getting banned and claiming it was WINE.

You're more likely to believe a random person that you don't know and can't judge their honesty than you are to believe Blizzard who actually has no reason to lie to you? If Bashiok is mistaken that's one thing, as he was mistaken with the world first Inferno clear and he admitted that he was mistaken a couple hours later, apologized for the confusion, and congratulated the people who got the first clear. So far he hasn't outright lied about anything though. Being mistaken and lying are two different things.

You're expecting the impossible from Blizzard though. They can't give you proof without violating someone's privacy. They can't say "Well in this specific instance we banned X user for Y, not because of Linux."

They have a pretty good reason to lie about it, Look at the commotion it has caused tonight, and now i've seen a couple gaming news sources pick it up, sourcing this thread. I'm not saying they are but atleast saying that a WINE user was banned for using this exploit, or this hack, or this bot would be nice. I never said he lied, all i said is i'm more inclined to believe these users that claim they have been banned for nothing more then using WINE (a third party program) which is a believable circumstance. I'm not asking for a specific instance, just more of "we banned a wine user for Y. Not because of linux." Once again, I'm not on either side of the fence, i'd only like some sort of proof, anything in blizzards favor will satisfy me, but i will not blindly bash the people making these claims, or defend blizzard like some people in here. I have always believed Linux should be fully supported by developers, and if there has been a wrong doing here it should be corrected. If it was justified there are ways to show evidence without sacrificing privacy.

There have been several reports in this thread of people using WINE and not being banned. This doesn't completely disprove the people that are banned but the evidence is starting to stack against them.

Its very hard to anonymize these people because there doesn't seem to be that many of them.

This has been discussed in previous posts. General consensus - run dual boot, play games on the windows partition. Doing that is waaaay less aggravation than trying to wait for Linux support (and i mean fix the warden false positive), or trying to prove you did not commit any foul play.

This. It should be common knowledge to anyone who knows what the word "Terminal" means when talking about Linux, that the OS is great for almost everything except gaming. I've currently got my HDD partitioned 3-ways to run Win 7 as my main system (I do a lot of gaming), Fedora for work, and Mint 13x for giggles. Takes only a moment to swap my OS, and I can access all of my files across any of the active OS'.

Also, saying that it's easier to cheat using Windows? I hope you're trolling and not that ignorant. It's only "easier" to cheat with Windows because people build them to work with Windows so they're accessible. If you know anything substantial about Linux (which the OP doesn't seem to), then you know it's the other way around for a decent Linux user.

You idiots wouldn't believe blizzard if they claimed the sky was blue and they provided a picture of the blue sky. You'd claim it was photoshopped.
Stop cheating. Stop whining when you get caught cheating. That'll be all, thanks.

This is interesting, but I gotta ask, what is WINE/ Linux, and what are their purposes?
Well Linux is not supported, only Mac OSX and Windows is. And everyone knows, that Blizzard is against third-party tools. Just use dualboot and run your game through Windows.

These people need to do some troubleshooting and figure out what else was running that looked like a cheat program. It's not supported also means they shouldn't have to troubleshoot the issue for you. Find out what they had in common running besides the OS and WINE. I bet a little work will figure it out.

Linux is an open source free operating system,

WINE is a way for you to run windows applications through linux.

It's called a botting program.

Linux is the second most popular operating system. It's free. WINE is a windows emulator that lets you run windows programs under Linux.
I'm really not surprised.

Here's my experience with blizzard custommer service :

I make Starcraft VODs on youtube and i need a licence from Blizzard to monetize my content.

So i look on the internet and find an e-mail adress to contact. I do contact them and have no answer from them...
After a few days, I pick up my phone and call Blizzard's headquarter in France...

I get to the reception to a woman that tells me that i have to send an e-mail to the adress i found previously. I told her i already sent the emails and she tells me that i have to wait for an answer... "How long can it take is my question" and she answers "it might take a week or they might just never answer... 0_à"

Being a serious matter (making money out of copyrighted material), i take it seriously and, well, with Husky, HD, Psy, Day9, Pom&Thud... blizzard has to know exactly what it's all about and have a process to go through by now...

So i call back the headquarters because i still haven't got an answer... The woman on the phone tells me the exact same thing she did the previous day...

Out of curiosity, i ask her can you give me the legal department on the phone or the so called "community" departement that i have to send an e-mail to so i can explain them immediatly what it is all about and we can make things move. She tells me "They have no phone, only email adress, the only phone in blizzard headquarter is the reception".

I'm like Seriously... WTF ? A multimillion dollar company has no phone 0_à

Well, a month later and i still have no answer to my problem, i send 2 mails a day since 30 days...

So yeah, to come back to the linux problem, they sold their game that works on their machine, they don't care about the rest... oh yeah, they care about one thing... selling you Heart of the Swarm of course...

It's only free if your time is worth nothing.

No, WINE stands for Wine Is Not An Emulator.

It's NOT an emulator, it simply uses a WIN API to run Windows code on a native Linux system.

but it's still OS from company they feel like is more appropriate for THEIR game, you take it or leave it.

and it's like beating dead horse with stick... and they already made it clear that, " we don't give aaaaa "

No, it's not "THEIR " game, not unconditionally. They chose to enter into a contract with the people who bought it. That contract has terms. They cannot change these terms single-handedly. If the terms say "account can be banned for cheating" and nothing about "account can be banned for playing using an OS not mentioned on the box", they just breached a contract.

Stop being sheep willing give up everything if someone demads it sternly enough.

However, Blizzard being an american companyI assume the contract says that blizzard can ban you whenever they want, with or without any reason. And US courts being the way they are, such a provilsion would likely be upheld.

Umm.. You are running the game in an emulator. It is possible to use that mechanism to cheat. Linux is not supported by the game, so basically you are someone who uses unsupported third party software which can be used to cheat. There isn't anything mysterious about the ban.

It isn't really any more of an emulator than win32 is on Windows. Sure, its an open source win32 API so it might be easier to modify. But as far as making cheats goes, the same methods can be used on Windows and are usually easier on Windows.

In this case, your comment shows your ignorance. Its fine to be ignorant of a technical subject such as this, but please don't talk like you have a clue.

well i dont see any proof from blizzard so far, except bashioks typed words.

typed words != proof

no statement á la:

Certain users were banned for using bot XY/hack AB/exploit YZ.

The people on the wine forum are NOT EVEN told in their support tickets what EXACTLY they have done wrong.

i quote: "Unauthorized third party software was found to be being used on your account."

they could at least have the decency to tell them WHAT 3rd party software they are accused to have used or what the 3rd party software was doing in the background.

But no. nothing like that...

you, my friend, dont seem to have read more then 1 page on this thread
