Really? That stinks...
I really miss the necromancer from LOD and that's the reason I rolled WD. So far he is only level 38 (Act II NM), but after hearing that I may go ahead and roll a Wiz now.
I love being able to drop frogs with right click, spam rolling fireballs with left, summon zombie dogs, summon gargantuan, drop acid, and undead grasp for my six skills...
I find that pretty effective, myself.

The other issue is the mana pool/mana cost is much higher relative to anyone else's resource.
Instead of having a "big mana pool with slow regen", the spells cost so much mana that a big mana pool doesn't mean anything.
Which is better and why?
Get to A3 Inferno with your WD and you will get all your answers.
But in short: Wizards can go with dps or with survivability, they have 2 viable choices for beating and farming A3/4. WDs have neither dps nor survivability.
That is, unless you get 'godly' gear worth 100m+ gold - then you can beat everything with any class. But if you had that you wouldn't be asking these questions.
There are very few viable inferno builds for the WD. The primary skills are just awful except for Poison Dart-Splinters. This is like the only build I find working in inferno act 2+
Firebomb can be switched out for something else. I just like it vs shielding/invu and large packs of weak enemies.
edit: Forget about pets. They get one shot early hell. I'll be very disappointed if they don't buff them in 1.04. But then again, this game is kind of a disappointment.

I have a terrible time with my WD as well. Worse survivability than a wizard at the same level and infinitely worse DPS. My partner's wizard already has a weapon with a 100 DPS rating, my WD has something like 60 or 70. Going with a better weapon sacrifices the mana regen I get on my Knife. Making sure I don't use too much mana so that I can still use Spirit Walk is a PITA. I can Acid Rain until my mana runs out in Nightmare and still have living enemies while my partner mows everything down with Kamehameha beams. Until they make pets worth a second look, I'm sticking with my monk.
personally i enjoy WD a lot more
i find it to be more powerful and more fun
My WD can easily farm act 3 inferno but if i trade all his gear to my wiz i just get wrecked (though the wiz still does great in act 2)
I also find that my WD works better in groups because of abilities like BBV and Bad Madicine
here's my spec if anyone's interested
also lol at people saying WDs are pigeon-holed into one spec when there's already been 3 WD specs linked in this thread (or well 2 and the vision quest-bears build that was mentioned)

wd is much better for me , i can solo act 1 - 4 inferno with not much health at all (7 - 10k) and around 80 k dps. much more fun and challenging rather than beam spamming. only problem i saw with is that other skills such as gargantuan is not viable skill unlike the swarm of fetish.
There's lots that's sub par about the witch doctor. But he's got a few key abilities that are excellent, beyond what a wizard has.
A number of abilities for the witch doctor do not have a cast time, so there's no delay before they go off. This is huge, especially when trying to react to inferno elite packs abilities. If you're getting vortexed into the middle of a molten/arcane/fire chains pack, you WILL get hit as a wizard. It's unavoidable. Best you can do is put up diamond skin and hope you can tank the damage long enough to teleport out or whatever. As a witch doctor you can spirit walk mid flight and just walk away safely.
If you're getting beaten on by enemies with knockback, it can be hard to get your defensive spells out as a wizard since they can stun lock you for a bit. Not a problem with WD instant casts.
You can get a free life with a WD that gives you limited invulnerability for a short time if you happen to get caught with a nasty burst of damage. This allows you one get out of jail free card you don't get with the wizard. You must play perfectly with the wizard as mistakes just flat out kill you.
Running away is easier with spirit walk if you need to do that. You move fast, and while it lasts, enemies will attack where you were, not where you are.
Bears are 700% damage per cast and you can spam it with VQ. You don't need much on paper DPS to do a ton of damage with bears. However, you need to be good with your cooldowns and abilities to safely get in tough enemies faces to bear spam them down.
But with that said, mana will heavily limit what abilities you can use, far more than the mage as it regens so slowly and every WD ability uses it. Lots of abilites are on cooldowns, so managing them can be challenging. Many abilities are too expensive to get much use out of on their own, you pretty much need to be running VQ to make use of them.
Pets are also pretty useless after you get into Act 2 inferno.
Wizard probably plays better as your standard caster class, while a WD has better survivability (if you play it right) and higher burst DPS potential. But the WD is quirky and can be difficult and frustrating to use, with many abilities/runes being "fun" but extremely lackluster (like the giant toad and pets).
