Diablo® III

Path of Exile : Skill tree

the graphics is below average ... gameplay is a little tricky - I often manage to misclick and such. Storywise I can't say anything so far - usuall "land on an island and try to figure out whats going on". Atmosphere is ok tough... it's dark and depressing.

But .... lol... the part that convinced me I was gonna play it IS THE PASSIVE SKILLTREE. Finally - no more clones. In D3 EVERY SINGE CLASS CHARACTER is the same... every single DH is like any other DH. Every Barb is like any other barb. Only gear makes them differen... *yawn*

I love sitting in front of the skilltree studying how I will progress. I can't have everything ... I have to make CHOICES.... I know... kids nowadays don't want that - they want everything.

Oh! Skill trees are too hard for me to understand!
It's like trying to chew gum and walk at the same time!
Who wants choices anyway? I need someone to tell me how to build my character... and find my loot... and win the game for me.

I intend on playing both D3 and POE on a casual basis.

POE skill trees have been changed last week so new people won't screw up so easy, no real hard decisions until you are around lvl 10.

I have seen so many games with real good graphics that require a lot of people to run out and buy a new $400 graphic card but where the game play was real bad that I am completely over what the graphics look like. Its all about the game play.

POE has a mini game where if you sell the right combination of loot to a NPC you get some neat rewards, its their version of crafting.

Instead of crafting it allows you to use different orbs which drop from mobs to modify any other piece of armor or weapon. For example you can use an Orb of Chance to randomly modify a grey item to a higher quality. It could even turn out to be a unique. The grey items are worth picking up because of this if they have good stats.

Anyway D3 graphics and combat system is smoother then POE but the POE game design is light years ahead of D3.

I dunno about you but I tried the game and its awesome. I'm sorry if given the freedom to play however you want is too hard for you.
Did you even read what I said? Freedom and difficulty aren't synonymous, much less freedom and quality. It's not too hard of a system, it's a bad system.

Yeah, there's a reason skill trees like that have been disappearing from games. It isn't because they're somehow "too difficult" or "too complex" or "too free" for today's gamers. It's because that type of skill tree is boring and meaningless. People want to level up and get an awesome new ability to try out, not a completely unnoticeable passive increase.

I watched for a while last night, long enough to get better impressions other than I still think the combat is clunky and unfinished. Now I think that combat is more than a little boring and uninspired.

Put that aside and it struck me how much of a throwback the game is to the mid-nineties. It looks 8 years old, the skill tree is overly complicated and nit-picky and full of passives, and to me anyway, it's just a nostalgia trip for those who really liked D2 without really adding much that's really new. It's obviously a labor of love and I salute it for that. But it seems to me that while people will play it obviously (I will since it's free) it's likely to always be the #2 or #3 game that you reach for when you're looking for something to play.

Don't believe for a minute that it won't need to make money if for no other reason to support worldwide servers and what not but I'm not all that sure that I see it surviving as a really long-term proposition.

Mostly it made me want to play D2. And that can't be a good thing for PoE.

Yeah that character tree is just dreadful. The combat is just terrible too. Uphill battle to fix those since they are core parts of the game. I'm hoping TL2 finds the right blend of the combat from D3 and the features from PoE because neither of these games are really worth playing long.

Path of Exile is a respectable game, I played it in beta for a few hours. The thing is, it is a new age Diablo 2 and really offers nothing new in terms of gameplay. I enjoyed the nostalgia of a D2 type of game, but in the end the character movement was the worst I've ever handled and the skill tree (as big as it was) was not in depth, half the skills are the same thing...ie: increase melee by 6%. I love the FFX sphere grid, in fact it was my favorite way of speccing in any game ever but let's not kid ourselves PoEx will not supercede this game. This game will evolve into a beautiful butterfly just give it two patches...

Only idiots have issues with poe skill tree, ppl who dont know to play any game !
Are you a caster ? then intellect, take some defensive nodes and some offensive nodes
Are u a melee? then take strenght and def + offensive
And teh same for the other 2 characters that use dex.
What is that complicated, u mean, hovering over bonuses and deciding what play style u want and where u want to allocate points is hard for you? Sorry, then you really suck lol....

I didn't say it was hard or took a lot of work to build your skills. The truth is it is poorly designed, they could streamline it incredibly easily and it would just be better. It also has too many passive skills and is all around boring. More isn't always better. Whoever designed it obviously lacked any focused idea of what they were doing, probably why it has gone through a couple massive overhauls already.

The skill tree is a lot simpler than it looks. You just need to plan your build beforehand. Choose your specialisation/s, find them on the tree, and work towards it. You'll often find clusters of the same kind of skills such as maces, elemental damage, and critical strikes, which will show you where to chart your path. Key skills look larger and have fancier graphics to make them stand out. Each class also has a starting area with skills relevant to their main build. But of course, the option is there to splash into other parts of the tree and create your own hybrid.

I'm going to try out a dual wand-wielding Marauder, just for the sake of it.

That was the way to go ! Oh My God, when I saw that tremendous spiderweb !!!!

I saw some people calling it 'Skilldrasil' like Yggdrasil.. It is quite astounding.

Graphics are serveral steps above D3's, which aren't that good either.

It's not like either are using DX11 with tess or anything crazy, they're both decent looking games and easy to run. The lighting in PoE owns anything D3's cartoon style can muster, and while crawling in the dark, it just steps on D3.

im sorry but unlike Bizzard, GGG dont hold your hand through the entire game. You acctually have to use your brain, use the tree on the site come up with a good build ect.

To be honest, I didn't like that skill tree. Waaaaay too complicated. When I first saw it, I was just like "This is probably the worst UI design ever...", I seriously did not know where to start.

People complain about D3 being wayyyyyyy too simple. So I guess D3 is the game for you and POE is the game for me.
