After finishing inferno before the patch with the IAS darts build, I immediately sold all my items on the RMAH before they lost their value. So there I was, entering 1.03 with a naked witch doctor and a few hundred USD on my battle.net account. First few days of the 1.03 patch, I was leveling other character classes but then it just got plain boring, and then I realized I missed playing WD. So there I was, scouring the forums for new ideas, comparing AH items via the spreadsheets, in short = a lot of theorycrafting.
First off, I listed what I didn't want in my new project.
-I didn't want a flavor of the month / gimmicky build
-I didn't want a "purist" build. (pure tank / pure glass cannon / pure cc / whatever). Yes, I agree, diablo 3 is not an MMO and each class has their own shortcomings (tanks suffer from long fights, enrage, can't keep good creep aggro / control, can't kill treasure goblins. While pure DPS/kiting classes will always have difficulty with mortar and reflect mobs, not to mention all the wasted "DPS time" while running around)
I wanted a solid, well balanced build that can handle EVERY boss, elite, champion pack that exists in inferno. With relative ease of course. :)
So I put aside my earnings, and began equipping my new witch doctor. I read Mr Muffles, Super and Dinobot's Tanks builds. I watched their youtube videos doing their boss kills, siegebreaker runs, etc looking at their strengths and weaknesses. I watched several other WD streams (btw, haloth's stream is amazing) and even non-WD ones for the extra knowledge in stats and game mechanics.ITEM BUILD

But wait, before you say "Hey, it's just another WD Acid Cloud tank build". The answer is both yes and no.STAT OVERVIEWCurrent basic stats
All Resist: ~600
Physical Resist: ~700
EHP: ~305k (via http://d3itemcompare.com/)
By now, you must be thinking "hey that's all average stats, mine is all much much higher". Yes, to some degree, you are correct. I consider the stats above to be "COMFORTABLE" to able to operate all act and all elites during including elite mobs. So basically, I maintained good (but not extraordinary) basic stats to make room for all the "on hit effects and procs" I have on my items (see below). On hit effects and Procs
+3.9% Chance to Chill on hit
+2.8% Chance to Knockback on hit
+3.6% Chance to Stun on hit
+2.4% Chance to Stun on hit
+2.3% Chance to Freeze on hit
+4.5% Chance to Freeze on hit
---------------------------------------------TOTAL via basic probability:
Chance to CC = 1-(.961*.972*.968*.976*.977*.955) = 17.66%
Chance to interrupt = 1-(.972*.968*.976*.977*.955) = 14.32%
These stats, I believe, is the reason why I can "semi-tank" everything while doing good damage and cc control. From act 1 to act 4, all bosses, all elite combinations with not much stress. All these Procs cancel the attack animation of the mobs, so I don't need to tank that much. I rarely even get hit by elite packs with slow attack animation even though I'm semi-tanking in the middle. The diablo inferno fight is very funny, he can't even cast most of his attacks, and when he does, I gain back the life in 1 sec.
The premise is the same as Super's tank doctor: Acid cloud every 3 secs, spam bears in between. Rinse repeat. Not a rule, but just a guide. But basically, you acid cloud if you need life, spam bears if you don't need em. After much practice, you will be able to discern what elites packs you can burst down with bear, and ones that you have to spam acid cloud with. :)
Again, I'm not here to prove anything. I'm just trying to give back to the community where I got this idea. I think this video can show you guys how enjoyable and fun the playstyle is:
Siegebreaker Farm 07-01-12: http://youtu.be/YJSsZrCNKa4
Siegebreaker Farm 07-11-12: http://youtu.be/OfqgwOmuFxI
Diablo Kill 07-11-12: http://youtu.be/_4PeCMg1PnM
Keep in mind that the video is quite outdated already and my gear was significantly weaker back then. Here is the BARE MINIMUM I would suggest to make this build work:Bare minimum recommended stats:
All Resist: 550
Chance to interrupt: 8%
You can also add me at mawts#1272 if you wanna ask some questions.
Also, props to Super, Muffles, Dinobot, Hesterry and Haloth for sharing their knowledge. I even talked to some of them in game to theorycraft and discuss new strats. And they have been more than helpful. This gear I have is not anywhere near "end gear". I'll continue to update this everytime I get better gear.
PS: This build is very stress free for me that I started a boss killing service at the Trade Forums. :)FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS SECTION
A) I can't spam acid cloud and bears, I always run out of mana. How do you do it without Blood Ritual or spiritual Attunement?
-I use ceremonial knife, head, and mojo with mana regen (my total mana regen is in the low 50's). Also, I didn't add any more attack speed other than the 1.4 in my knife.
This guide below (quoted from another thread) might help you with your computation. :)
[Note: This is just with a base mana regen of 56 without the use of BBV, SA, or other mana-regen skills, and just using VQ for a total amount of 224 mana/sec]
Unlimited casting with locust, 1.14 attack speed
Unlimited casting with acid cloud, 1.30 attack speed
Unlimited casting with bears, 1.6 attack speed
Unlimited casting with bats, 1.83 attack speed
Unlimited casting with toads, 6.58 attack speed
B) Why do you use Zombears / Acid Rain? There are much better alternatives for PROC'ing
While I completely agree that Zombears are horrible proc generators and big stinker/flame dogs are the best ones. Acid rain however, is probably the next best thing along with rain of toads and firepit.
But when I sit and think about all scenarios, Acid Cloud for Proc'ing is in my opinion, the best and most well rounded skill that can cover all scenarios, elite combinations, and bosses. Not to mention that awesome 280% LOH near the middle and extremely large AOE radius. Bears are just used as filler DPS before reapplying acid cloud. :)
Why not big stinker/flame dogs?
-pets die too fast in act 3 onwards
-gets wiped out instantly with AOE like arcane, plague, desecrate, molten, freeze, etc
-ghom AOE, belial AOE, etc. I think you pretty much get the point. :)
Why not firepit?
-Lack of damage, period.
Why not rain of toads?
-Rain of toads is an awesome spell. It proc's well, it stacks, good LOH, decent damage. But there is one problem, the range is very very small. Particularly a problem with fast moving elites, so for me, acid rain has the slight advantage in terms of all around utility (paired with zombears for DPS of course).
C) Why are you spending tens of millions of gold on your amethysts? You could buy godly gear with that money!!
-While that is correct, I think it wouldn't be wise to blow out all your gold for gear until the 1.04 class balance patch. If there is any item in the game that is least likely to be hit by patches, its the gems. Remember, this build will be ever-changing because of tweaks / patches / buffs / nerfs. This thread should serve as a guide for a well-balanced WD at present.
D) What stats do I prioritize when gearing? All resist / armor / HP / procs???
Just like Weapon Damage and Intelligence, the stats above go hand-in-hand with each other. What I do is get them to a "comfortable level" and compare them via how my EHP (Effective HP) looks like.
You can compute your EHP via this tool: <http://d3itemcompare.com/>
What did I mean by "comfortable level"?
These stats get noticeable diminishing returns (which means you get less bang for the buck) starting from:
500 All Resist / 4k Armor and up
1500 Intelligence and up
Ok, been doing a lot of testing in my free time.
Been doing a lot of work with Axius, one of the most badass theorycrafters in the game and the pioneer of Pacifist Barb in D2.
And we have concluded that..
BLIND IS FRIGGIN' GOOD.
It's so good, it might be even better than stun/freeze. Let my identify its properties:
-It causes enemies stop attacking completely
-It cancels attack animation on normals, bosses and elites
-It cancels elite affixes (arcane, mortar, teleport, frozen, jailer, etc)
-It causes the enemy to turn around when proc'ed, then enemy will turn back to you again (which means more cc duration). *add chill and slow/grasp to that, and the turn speed will decrease more, hence becoming more effective*
Now that we have talked about its properties, let me talk about where blind can occur.
amulet perfect roll: 5.1%
main hand perfect roll: 2.5%
off hand perfect roll: 2.5%
First try with blind incorporated into the build was a ZK run. The sheer amount of cc just facerolled act 2 until reaching Zoltan Kulle. From the beginning to the end, he was able to release one fireball for the whole duration of the fight. ONE. He was basically stunlocked the whole time.
Same results for act 3 elites, diablo and siegebreaker. Upon reviewing the videos, it was totally ridiculous. :)
