Diablo® III

Rend and Attack Speed

Short version: Does attack speed affect the speed or amount of damage rend does?

Long version: The way I see it, there are 4 possibilities:

The first is just the null hypothesis: AS does nothing with respect to rend. Obviously your attack animation will receive a speed boost, but once rend hits a monster there is no difference.

The second is that AS increases the rate at which rend deals damage, but not the amount of damage it deals. This would correspond to a reduction in the base duration. For example, 10% total IAS would reduce rend's duration to 4.5 seconds but a base 50k weapon hit would still do 350k damage.

The third is that it increases the rate at which rend deals damage, but maintains the 5-second duration listed in the tooltip. This would correspond to an increase in the total amount of damage done by rend. For example, 10% IAS would result in a base 50k weapon hit dealing 385k damage over 5 seconds of rend, rather than 350k.

The fourth is a combination of the last two. Rend deals more damage and has a shorter duration. In this example, 10% IAS and a 50k base weapon hit would give you a rend that lasts for 4.5 seconds and deals 385k damage.

So, rend users... does anybody know what's up with rend and IAS?

Ive been using Rend since 1.04 and have found that Attack Speed does not increase the rate that damage is dealt.. What it does do though is it increases your base damage, and as it affects your base damage it increases your rend damage...

This is because rend has a locked in function where it can only deal 700% damage over 5 seconds, so faster attack speed will not change it from over 5 seconds to over 3 seconds for example...

So in short, attack speed increases added damage to base damage, and thus all skills. But there is no added synergy with rend and attack speed.

Nope, as has no function in rends damage. What it might do, however, is speed up the rend animation. I know there are skills where this is the case, or was at one point, but someone who is sure would have to chime in.

Attack speed does not increase your base damage. It increases the damage number on your character sheet, but that number includes your attack speed as a factor. Rend is based on the amount of damage you do in a single swing, and single-swing damage does not change with attack speed.

That's why this build is nice: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/barbarian#aZXkcS!W!bZY..c
It only profits from the weapon damage all. Btw it's for medium equip you don't need any lifelech or life on hit. Of course lifeleech helps for example from the belt. If you have good lifeleech already, get Merciless Assault on the Charge for even more Rage and damage.
