Just started using this hammer (and just got to level 60). It's tons of fun.
Can anyone look at my profile and give advice on build or gear? I've started A1 and although I don't have any problems on MP2, my health bar moves wildly up and down like the equalizer on my stereo. I'm worried that once I progress, those downswings will turn into deaths.
I only play to progress (no farming), so I don't usually have more than 500K gold to my name if that helps with the advice.
I appreciate any help you can give me.
You'll have to do some farming in order to improve your gear. Keep improving STR, crit, crit dmg, and resistances. Eventually if your dps is high enough you can drop wrath for another skill (unless you want wrath to break CC's).
Has anyone dropped any ubers yet with the hammer? I've one shotted ghom/rakanoth 6 times on MP5 already (with only 1 organ drop ><). No need for details on this fight, just kill em and move away from the gas when you can.
Finally met ZK/siege breaker for the first time last night. Died 6 times but did eventually get the kill (and the organ as well). Lots of dogging and chasing in that fight. Key is to keep up rend while chasing ZK. Dodge ZKs slow bubbles and run from his big AOE. Dont rend in the bubble or you have to wait for the animation to end before moving! Drop ZK first then siege is easy. Between the rends, tornados, and lightning from the hammer you'll be doing continuous dmg on both of them throughout the fight. Bash ZK as much as possible for fury. Thought it was a tough fight on MP5.
Have yet to go against Mahgda/skelly king.
In a party of 4 @ MP5 (old) we dropped ZK/Siege (dodged and ran a lot as well). Ghom/Rak was easy. Mah/King was by far the toughest - we all died 5 times.
Schaefers's was great at zapping the ubers but my overall HotA build was lacking fury gen vs them. When I'd do it again, I'd respec my skills to use Bash as my fury builder. In the meantime, fast farming at MP5 (old) is doable with the occasional death.
I looove Schaefers's. :)
How have you found things going lately with the switch from IP and Leap to OP and GS?
Aren't you missing the damage mitigation from IP? or is Crushing Advance enough to protect you? I've found in packs of Elites, when I get in the middle of a big group, I need IP to stay alive.
I just started using GS last night so I'm still not sure about the skill quite yet. So far I do like it as the stun can setup multiple tornados around the group and the slow rune keeps them in the tornados for bit. It also helps with setting up rend for healing. In a pinch I could GS when low on fury for the inherent fury generation and to safely bash the stunned monsters.
The other thing GS provides is a timely interrupt. This alone might be the reason why I might keep this skill, but we'll see.
Regarding OP vs leap, I do like OP much better. Pre 1.0.5, leap was better as i could jusy leap blindly to gain the defense bonus. Now with the new 1.0.5 leap you have to land and hit as many targets to maximize its effect and I found that it got me into more trouble than not (mainly missing my intended destination or landing right in the middle of the pack). OP is nice as you can just hit the button and get instant dmg mitigation. Plus with enough tornado crits, the cooldown goes down fast.
As for why I got rid of IP...I don't like long cooldowns and I found I rarely used the skill. It was just my "oh crap" button. Found it was better to just replace it with a skill I would use all the time.
As for my overall dmg mitigation, it's perfectly fine right now. Since the last bug fix patch, I can run mp7 with no problems. I run MP 6 for faster speed though. I'll have to try mp8 just to see how it goes.

Yep definitely. I'll add you when I get a chance.
I survive better using the Schaeffer's hammer in inferno better than with my Skorn even though doing so reduces my dps by 40k.
Yup that's right. What crazy is you sometimes could be in the middle of a huge pack and get frozen/stunned and still get out alive as you suck the life out of all the monsters in range of the shield. Sometimes....
Believe the CD would be better. Suggest you get one higher than 100% though (as close to 200% as you can afford).
You asked me a question when I was AFK. Between the 50% proc/144 CD vs the 38%proc/185% cd hammers , I'd get the one with higher CD since its close to 40% proc and the CD would benefit the other offensive skills. Any lower proc chance and I would choose the other hammer.
Yeah, I'm starting to notice a crap load of Schaefer's going for sale, so I'm starting to think this build (SUPER viable) is getting more notice. I was playing with a friend in MP5 last night, no problems other than just the time it took to kill guys, which is happening to everyone I'm sure.
With all these new hammers coming out though, I'm seeing some HIGH crit dmg (as high as 200%) with some proc's going up to your 50%. Bought one for 43k last night, 50/144. Prices are getting reasonable.
I believe there are more hammers on the AH due to:
1) the patch buffed legendary rates
2) paper doll stats drop in comparison to skorn so they insta sell once one drops.
3) no one can figure out exactly how much the damage of the proc does.
Speaking of proc dmg, have you tested how much your max crit does with the proc? I think I've figured out the dmg but I wanted to check. Also check what your min crit is if you can.

5k dps?? If you read the rest of the thread you'd know that there are other factors that increase the proc dmg. My crits now top out at 280k per tick at 2 ticks per second.

@Xanderprime I have noticed about the same ticks for the shield procs. I saw some 300k procs also. But seems normal is 70-250k for me. Have been farming at MP6 and find it easy mode. Even though MP8 is not to bad either with current gear. I think if i switch back to IK belt and ic's would be much better to run through MP8.
I find every day hit the auction house and can find cheap schaffers. Just looking for higher cd, higher proc rate, and higher DPS. Currently between flipping hammers got about 1mil in current one. LOL
I think I might have figured out how exactly how the proc is calculated. See if these figures match what you see:
Proc DMG per tick (2 ticks per sec for 5 seconds):
MIN Regular White Dmg 16754
MAX Regular White Dmg 50263
MIN Regular Crit Dmg 71708
MAX Regular Crit Dmg 215124
MAX Regular Crit Dmg vs Demons 245241
MAX Regular Crit Dmg vs Elites 221578
MAX Regular Crit Dmg vs Elite Demons 252599
I'm not 100% if that's what I'm getting, but I'd say my top crits are about 200k or so, a bit more on elites because of Tyraels' Might.
That being said XP, I noticed you were using Vile Ward now. Compared to my shoulders, can you tell me where the benefit is coming from?
My calc above was for Gasfish.
Yours is as follows:
MIN Regular White Dmg (50%) 14989
MAX Regular White Dmg (150%) 44966
MIN Regular Crit Dmg (50%) 55757
MAX Regular Crit Dmg (150%) 167272
MAX Regular Crit Dmg vs Demons (150%) 190690
MAX Regular Crit Dmg vs Elites (150%) 172290
MAX Regular Crit Dmg vs Elite Demons (150%) 196411
I only bought my shoulders for the basic stats and the health globe bonus (I like this stat). You can find any shoulders with those stats, mine just happens to be a vile ward.
Barbs do not need to go for vile wards normally as other classes buy to go over 200 in their primary stats. Shoulders can naturally go to 300 str
Since you want to be in the middle of things with this hammer, which do you think provides better defensive ability: IP/Ignorance is Bliss (heal your way out of trouble), IP/Contempt for Weakness (reflect damage), WC/Hardened Wrath (mitigate damage) or WC/Impunity (mitigate elemental damage)? The 50% reflect of IP/CFW seems very tempting but it's only 5s and it looks like it might not provide any defensive help at all, but rather just reflect the damage that you would have ignored anyway. WC seems like a smaller bonus but lasts for much longer.
