Ok, let me begin this by saying that while I am not an “elite” player. So when you look at my profile don’t expect to see Act 4 Inferno or an awesome set of gear… I’m working on it. Please don’t post complaints that I don’t know what I am talking about based only on that. That being said, I have been working on gem crafting for about three weeks. I work at making things as efficient as possible but I am still spending 2 to 3 hours at a time sitting at Shen’s workshop each time I set them up. At first I wished that there was an instant craft button or something to that affect but I realized the flaw in that quickly in that it would ruin the market for gems. So I tried to think of a way to craft efficiently but that would not take away from the gameplay and still made sense.
I came up with this, mimic Minecraft. In Minecraft you can build a furnace to melt ore and create things. The system that this furnace uses is what the artisans in Diablo 3 need. You put in the materials that you need, ore and coal in the case of Minecraft or Gems, tomes and gold in Diablo 3’s case, you can walk away and play the game and come back to collect the final product. The system that Diablo 3 uses doesn’t make sense, at least not to me. Think about this, if you went to a carpenter and asked for a custom desk, would you stay and watch him or her make it? No, you would give him the plan and the money to do it and go about your day. So why do I sit and have to craft each thing individually? If I trust Shen and Haedrig to follow me in my adventures across Sanctuary then why wouldn’t I trust them to do the jobs that they are there for? Common sense says the artisans need to go (Which would be a travesty, Shen is hilarious and I have a suspicion that he is going to play a huge part in the next installment of the story) or that there needs to be a time delay system in place. Say I want to craft 100 radiant square gems radiant gems. With this system I would give Shen 3,600 radiant gems, 2,700 tomes of jewel crafting, 1,500 tomes of secrets and 14,243,000 gold and walk away. After the time that Blizzard would set for that amount, you come back from your gameplay and equip them or put them on the auction house, then go back to your game. This feels like it would be closer to the philosophy that Blizzard has taken on for this game then the way things stand now. Before I started this post I just completed the craft job that mentioned above. It took 3100 separate crafts, each craft taking approximately 3 seconds, taking 2.5 hours. Now I would be playing the game either way but I would rather play the game during this time than sit there and catch up on a podcast or TV show and laugh at the Templar complain about just standing around. Even if Blizzard made it so you had to craft each type separately (I.E. 3600 radiant gems to 1800 square gems then 1800 square gems to 900 flawless squares and so on) that would still make much more sense than what is currently in place. Hopefully Blizzard at least looks at this suggestion and takes it on. Let me know what you guys think. |

It's a good idea but what happens if you log out before the time has elapsed? Does the crafting continue or stop? Where do the mats go in the meantime - to your stash? What if your stash is full? You would need a system like the AH whereby items are stored and you would have to retrieve them outside gameplay.

An option to give the players to input a certain amount of gems they can craft would be fantastic since they already placed the amount you can possibly make enclosed in a [] when you craft em gems. It would certainly save time.
Square Ruby [30]. player inputs 25 on some field to yield 25 square rubies in one go. bump bump! I haven't been crafting much of my old gems because of this problem. It gets really tedious. |

I think the easiest way to solve those issue would be to have a small temporary chest in the crafter's menu. To avoid people taking advantage of the free storage space is to tie it to the artisan level or only allow the required materials to be stored there. Granted your option of using the ah or an adaptation of it could work as well. |

The crafting is a massive time and gold sink for the rich the ignorant and the obsessive compulsive imo. I would rather farm an act for the same time then sell the items and add it to the gold I would be spending otherwise to buy what I wanted to craft originally.

I think this fix would at least remove the time sink aspect of it. The gold sink is really in the eye of the beholder. To some, like me, it is worth it to craft gems. Though I would have to agree with you that the black smith gamble system makes less sense than to just buy off the ah but i also know a few people who don't want to use the ah at all and only want to craft and farm their items. |
