Diablo® III

Unbelievable Latency Spikes Since 1.05 Patch

Update: To be clear, this thread is about network latency and not video or inpug lag.

I haven't been able to play again until today, but things are still completely unplayable during peak times. I've deleted the cache, reinstalled the client, set secondary login to automatic, flushed DNS, disabled my motherboard's traffic priority software, changed video settings (max frames, vsync, windowed, low settings, etc), run as administrator and checked firewall settings but nothing helps. When I get these spikes, latency will typically show between 800 and 1600 ms when things catch up. It's not as bad tonight, as in I only get 15-20 second lag spikes about once per minute instead of for every action I try to take. Please see post 3 for my dxdiag and preferences.

Original post:

Whenever I try to do anything, whether it's town portal, leave game, equip gear, etc, there's 15+ seconds of lag before it happens. The game is completely unplayable for me. I've tried resetting my router, deleting the Blizzard cache and restarting the client but nothing seems to help. My connectivity seems fine with other applications.

Things have been bad before, as in a few seconds of sporadic lag spikes, but never anything like this. Any ideas? I've really been looking forward to this patch and this is really frustrating.

tanis0,

Can you post some information about your computer? You can find this information in the Direct X Diagnostic Tool:

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista, type dxdiag in the search field)
Hit Enter or OK

Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste it ALL here.

Could you also post your D3Prefs.txt file? It's located in the My Documents\Diablo III folder.

I also get this lag, but i is more like 1-2 seconds for me.

To be clear, I'm talking about network lag and not video lag.

I'm also having lag, my latency is more than 1000ms since I patched the game today. There's no other activities going on, on internet other than casual browsing.

I'm having lag too. If I cast a spell it takes like 10 secs. before it does anything, same for town portal, etc.

I wanted to see your prefs file mainly as it was reset with the patch. Any changes you had made to it previously would have been set back to default settings.

Are you seeing a high latency reading or do things just take longer to happen now?

I'd still suggest lowering some of the settings in-game like shadow quality for instance. I'd also remove the fps limiters and enable vsync.

I've seen latency anywhere between ~130 and 1000 something. I've seen the indicator bar go from full green to half red. Regardless of the indicated latency, the issues seem the same.

A lot of times when I join the game, my character takes a long time to appear though the background appears right away and FPS is fine. To get to that point though, it often fails to create the game and I get all sorts of errors. I didn't keep track of the specifics as much as I should have, but I got several from failure to create game, failure to join game, something about public games (which is odd since I've never played in a public game), etc. I'm unable to reproduce this part now though.

Things are somewhat better now though I've made no additional changes. Sometimes things happen immediately now, though there is still often significant lag. For example, if I move an item back and forth between slots in my inventory, sometimes it will move immediately and sometimes it will take 30+ seconds before it moves. That's an improvement on before when nothing ever happened in less than about 15 seconds, but it's still completely unplayable.

I've lowered all of the video settings to the minimum, removed the fps limiters and set vsync to enabled. This has brought my FPS from a constant 50 to a constant 60, but otherwise seems to have made no difference.

EDIT: It does appear that latency is jumping to high levels whenever I'm getting a lag spike now (though it was impossible to tell earlier because it was so bad) and things seem to be continuing to improve. If it weren't for the fact that I know this isn't affecting everyone, I'd swear the lag was server-side.

Same here. Started with 1600-1800ms in-game latency. Dropped to 450-550ms in about half an hour. Still unplayable.

I can attach diags / settings but they are the same as they were about a month ago when I last logged and was able to play with <100ms latency (I know that the patch reset the game options to their default state and I changed them back to whatever they were before).

Other games are running OK that makes me believe that this issue is caused by the patch and / or the current state of the BNet service.

It looks like the problem has completed gone away for now as of about 10 minutes ago. Nothing has changed on my end and I suspect it will be just as bad again during prime-time tomorrow but I guess we'll see.

I am also having lag, I feel as if it is input lag tho, While trying to move it feels nice and smooth for a little while then all of a sudden the clicking no longer works and my guy just keeps going until he stops for a second.

I get 15 secs of smooth play time then 2-5 seconds of lag, then it all catches up with itself in super fast motion. It's been fine until patch so almost certain the problem is not my end.

Same here I get up to 2000 latency... My internet connection seems fine since I can browse just fine... This didn't happen before patch 1.05

I am having the same problem. 2k + msec spikes almost consistently. Started happening with this patch.

Same here, I've played over 30 hours on Hardcore pre 1.05 with absolutely no problems. Ever since 1.05, I get 5-10 sec server lag spikes and have watched 4 Hardcore chars die due to lag. Hardcore is unplayable because I never know when I'm going to be disconnected from the game and find a dead char staring back at me. I have no connectivity issues with any other application or game and downloads are fine. It's only Diablo 3, and only since 1.05. I've been through the forums and deleted caches, reset routers and modems, removed routers, system restored, run malwarebytes, disabled antivirus etc with no difference. I like this game, but can only put up with so much...
