just curious as to why fiery brimstones have fallen so far in price, particularly after the patch as they were sitting around 50k, and then within less than a day they are at 28k. Are people just deeming that crafting legendaries is useless?
Basically yes. People think that with the flood of new legendary items, most of which will still be trash, there will be far more brimstones than useful crafted items UNTIL they decide to change smithing to make it at least passable.
I cannot think of many regularly useful legendary smithed items anymore. Some of the Sages are still ok, but not all.
The problem is that no matter how cheap materials get, crafting legendary items will always cost 130k+ because of the blacksmith cost. Items are getting cheaper and cheaper on the auction house all the time, and eventually the expected value of a craft will be less than the cost of making it. For most recipes, this has happened already, which means crafting is a losing proposition. So as crafting becomes less and less of a viable way of getting items (or making money), the demand for brimstones keeps dropping. In the meantime, crappy legendary items keep dropping, so the supply is high, and getting higher all the time. The law of supply and demand tells you that the price will drop, and will continue to drop until it reaches approximately vendor price, unless Blizzard does something to make crafting more attractive or brimstones less plentiful.
I think when it comes to crafting they pretty much have to remove or reduce 90% of the gold cost altogether in the sense that the current fixed gold cost create a "floor" crafting cost for items, they should just increase the mat costs and use that as their sole factor in crafting costs as it fluctuates with the market.
Since there is a fixed "floor" crafting costs and the randomness of crafting it just makes it so that crafting is not worth it at it's current costs and as such no one in other then achievement hunters are actually crafting.
My solution would be to:
1) remove the gold cost for all crafting items or reduce by 90%
2) limit the number of random affixes to no more than to 2 or 3 or even just 1 for the best legendary items
3) add more plans, currently the best legendary and set plans are no match for majority of the top tier items
4) added plans should be very rare (IK, Tal's, etc.)
5) add ring/amulet crafting to jeweler
One day they will find a use for them again until then i just hoarde mine
Over 75 brimstones just from crappy legends, and probably another 30-40 back in the day when i salavged alot because crafting armor was worth it and made alot of gold.
Crafting is just about useless now.
