He said: "In Diablo 2 the followers were not really late-game valuable. In Diablo 3 they WILL be end game valuable!" and the crowd responded with applause.
D2 Act III merc was way more late-game valuable than any D3 follower. I equipped mine with gear worth 10m and he had about 5k dps...
I don't remember him saying anything like that, but if he did, he's clueless.
D2 mercs were awesome.
you might be clueless too :/
My DPS followers have more than 5k DPS with !@#$ gear I found that wouldn't sell for 100k a piece.
Also, it's 5k DPS + some % of your dps ( crit %, IAS, and so on ), plus the CC's, plus their special attacks ( the enchantress AoE, the scoundrel multishot, and so on ).
JW @ BlizzCon 2011 - about followers: 55 min 30 sec.
My Shelma had 1350 xbow +crit dmg, 4,5 crit chance + 25% crit dmg rings x2, amulet with 8.5 Crit chance + crit dmg. He did not reach 6k dps if I remember cleary. It was about a month ago.
My scoundrel has 5.6 k dps and I don't even use him. I spent 300k to fill up his slots last month.
Stack primary stat before adding crit-- look how weak his base weapon is but dex changes everything. Adding crits with small numbers accomplished very little.
Look for for 4 stat items to put on followers and profit. Followers get 2.5x the stats thus stat points are 2.5x more valuable for them. This also means other stats are less important relative to them.
Still there is no doubt that D2 merc >>>>> d3 follower. I understand followers were meant to be support, but mercs in d2 were fun! D3 reverted back to d2 classic's way of making mercs minor support, which is a step back.

Theres no question about it, followers are just there to distract/eat a few hits before the monsters come after you.
If you guys think they could use some TLC go support this thread: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/6794322893?page=1#0
