The whole "good with computers" thing

I've come to the conclusion that people only think I'm brilliant with computers because they are just completely oblivious to them. I know it's a random thing to bring up in the forums but I just spent 6 hours fixing my moms computer after she got a virus and I'm hearing it again. I've helped so many people "fix" their computers, network, hardware, etc and about 80% of the time, its a 10 minutes and I didn't have the foggiest idea what to do until I typed "How to fix this problem" Into google. If I already know how to "fix" the problem it's usually because I've run into the same problem and googled it thus, learned. The only real difference is I keep rkill on a flash drive in my pocket because i've used it so many damn times.

So, that being said, I really wish there was a way to let the entire world know to never underestimate google. Before you ask me, try asking google, not that I mind helping people It's just that in MY opinion, more often then not it's not a matter of having the answers just knowing where to find them.

So agreed. I am an IT guy at a casino. I have many many years of experience with PC's in all different aspects. I have learned a lot but just like every other "computer guy" I run into issues that I am unable to solve off the top of my head. There are just too many potential situations out there to know them all. Anyways, when I get to that point I whip out google, which I have dubbed mans best friend. This gives me the answers I need part of the time.

My point is, don't lower yourself because you use google. I guarantee you most all people that fix computers have or will use it at some point or another. Also, using google is a skill within itself. A lot of people have no clue where to even begin when typing what they are trying to find in google.

So, cheers! And keep it up.

That's my problem. Currently trying to find out how to run my king's quest games through DOSbox and it's all such a jumble! I'm a smart cookie, but unfamiliar with PC's. You don't know how many times I pray a bus full of nerds will break down outside my house so I can just show them my problem instead of trying to google every tiny detail.

I do love me some google, but sometimes it would be nice to have a handy friend like you guys.
Remember that and be proud it comes easy to you.

The fact that you think you know about computers because you fixed a problem by googling it is very sad.
People like you are the decline with America.
You don't know anything, you just read something on google.
Go to school.

Obviously you didnt grasp the tone of the OP... try reading with a little comprehension next time and a little less nerdrage. I was the one who said they "knew" about computers. I know nothing about how these magic boxes work so if you are going to bash anyone for having to google things to feel smart, bash me. (feel free to "educate" me by fixing my comp troubles too while you're at it, I wont mind)

Hey dummy, I covered that.
Stop thinking you can unlock the secrets of the world by getting a response on a forum.

Go to school, if you haven't heard this advice before you don't have good people in your life.

Pay no attention to this guy, he's jealous cause he's a complete idiot that knows nothing. Doesn't take even half a brain to read the OPs post and see that he's saying he doesn't know much about computers, only what he's fixed.

For the OP, my hat off to you, I've been in IT for years and most others I have worked with do t even know how to use google. Being a good PC tech isn't so much about knowing computers in and out, it's having good common sense and knowing how to find the answers. I'd hire you in a second, he'll feel free to replace my current coworker, she took 2 hours to figure out how to boot windows into safe mode...and she's been in IT for 14 years..../faceplam

so very true, Years of playing online games finally got me in the habit of using Google for everything - At work when I suggest Google it, or Youtube it, to people, they get this sparkle of Oh yea! Duh! in their eyes.
