Three abilities per tier for followers would allow far more customization, and I think followers are missing some real role-defining abilities/passives:

I like the idea of allowing the followers to have more options on weapons. Besides that though, my main gripe is that the Templar needs to be able to pull aggro like WD pets because the monsters ignore him 99% of the time.
Skills wise, I can live what they have now. But if I were to change a skill from each follower, I'd replace the Scoundrel's Vanish with the Demon Hunter's Smokescreen - Choking Gas, Templar's Intervene with the Monk's Cyclone Strike - Implosion, and Enchantress's Force Push with the Wizard's Arcane Orb - Celestial Orb. Of course, for balance issues, there would need to be some reduction in damage percentages and cooldowns to prevent the followers from abusing them.
I had been using Enchantress on my Barbarian because of the 15% increased armor -- not the control (charm and hex) -- so I've been using her Focused Push, Erosion, and Focused Mind. When the armor was nerfed down to 5%, I considered switching her, but I missed my Maximus demon too much, so I stuck with her. I had switched to Scoundrel for the 3% crit (since I'm using a whirlwind: blood funnel build), and I gave my scoundrel a Hellrack. He actually put out more DPS than my enchantress as far as numbers go, but ultimately the root from Hellrack and the slow wasn't enough to keep me with him, so I switched back to Enchantress.
And the problem is, I'm bored with both of them, and terribly not interested in the Templar. When I'm not playing with my wife and her monk, then I'm using my followers. And while followers aren't meant to be replacements for players, they should be pretty awesome in their own right. No one says, "Sorry, I can't play with you, my follower is better than you" to a friend, and that's certainly not what anyone wants to see happen. What they do want to say though is, "Oh, you can't play right now? That's okay. I can still have a great companion with my follower."
I think it'd be pretty awesome if followers had levels of their own too (past 60). Put those extra hellfire rings to use! Maybe at certain intervals in follower paragon levels, additional item slots could open.
