Is Nats really the way to go?

why not use both?

Obviously because the next hellfire ring I roll will be a trifecta.

dude, i ONLY roll trifecta hellfires.... . . . . . . . .

Monks are just too crit reliant IMO to drop any CC, let alone 7 CC. If you have a SOJ, I'm more then happy to record a video and see the comparison between the two when tanking mp10 ghom...

I guess we just have difference preferences when it comes to gear but there is a reason why every endgamer picks a nats set > soj..

I have a 25% elite/9% FoT ring I just bought for 5M to test this. It's less than ideal, but I didn't want to lay out any significant amount of cash for a better 30%/SW one. My MP 10 ghom test are not too distinguishable with either ring. I just snapshot the SW and then hold down the right mouse button, soI guess it's not a real field test.

You're welcome to use the ring for your own tests if you want. I'd like to know how even a cheap SoJ compares to a solid Nat's ring.

I've also gotten the impression that the bonus damage from elites does not actually multiply your total damage by 130%. While it's still a powerful affix, it's not quite as powerful as one would first think. In contrast the 7% bonus from Nat's set gives more actual DPS than indicated due to the extra Cyclones.

This is actually a major concern, now that you mention it. It's possible that it's additive with Overawe, Foresight, Combo Strike, etc. It does seem to be a little on the light side of the effectiveness I was expecting in my tests, especially given the bonus to FoT. It's possible even the skill bonuses are additive.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeble can shed some light on this. (Vrkhyz?)

Whatever happened to that thread where people timed Azmodan kills and divided his health by their time to figure out true dps?

yeah, nat' sets are totally worth it. Especially if you're on a budget.

4M for 7 crit, 12 movement speed, 200ish dex, 9ias, 80+ resist, possibility of some vit and average damage IS A STEAL

For spending less (3.2m to be exact) money, I got 394 dex, 9ias, 6 crit, 118 all res + 44 fire res, 269 vit, and 22-52 average damage with Ice Climbers + Lacunis + rare ring.

The ONLY stat you listed that I lost, was 1% crit chance.

Mathed!

As far as the potential each set of items, lets take a mathematical look at the two:

1. Lacuni's + Ice Climbers + Rare ring
    A. Lacuni's max rolls:

  • Dex + Vit = 100/100
  • All res = 80
  • Crit Chance = 6%
  • Increased Attack Speed = 9%
  • Movement Speed = 12%
    • B. Ice Climbers' max rolls:

  • Dex + Vit = 300/200
  • All res = 80
  • Bonus Life % = 12
  • Socket = 58 Dex
  • Reduces Cold Damage = 7-10%
    • C. Rare ring

  • Average Damage = 66 (I think)
  • Dex + Vit = 100/100 (if you take this as your 6th roll)
  • All res = 80
  • Increased Attack Speed = 9%
  • Critical Damage = 50%
  • Critical Chance = 6%
    • D. Total stats given:

  • Dex = 500 (558 including socket)
  • Vit = 400
  • Bonus Life % = 12
  • All res = 240
  • Increased Attack Speed = 18%
  • Critical Chance = 12%
  • Critical Damage = 50%
  • Average Damage = 66
  • 1 Socket = 58 Dex or 58 Vit
  • Reduces Cold Damage = 7-10%
  • Movement Speed = 12%
  • ---
    2. Natalya's Reflection + Natalya's Bloody Footprints + Rare bracers
      A. Natalya's Reflection max rolls:

  • Average Damage = 66
  • Dex = 84-89
  • Life Regen = 161-234
  • Increased Attack Speed = 9%
  • Critical Damage = 50%
  • Critical Chance = 6%
  • *2pc Set Bonus = 7% Critical Chance
    • B. Natalya's Bloody Footprints max rolls:

  • Dex + Vit = 300/200
  • All res = 80
  • Armor = +241-265
  • Melee Dmg Reduction = 5-6%
  • *2pc Set Bonus = 7% Critical Chance
    • C. Rare bracers max rolls:

  • Dex + Vit = 200/200
  • All res = 80
  • Critical Chance = 6%
    • D. Total stats given:

  • Dex = 584-589
  • Vit = 400
  • Life Regen = 161-234
  • Armor = +241-265
  • All res = 160
  • Melee Dmg Reduction = 5-6%
  • Average Damage = 66
  • Critical Damage = 50%
  • Critical Chance = 19%
  • Increased Attack Speed = 9%
  • ---

In the end, this gives the advantages to pairing #1 of the following:

  • Bonus Life % = 12
  • All res = 80
  • Increased Attack Speed = 9%
  • 1 Socket = 58 Dex/Vit
  • Reduces Cold Damage = 7-10%
    • And the advantages of pairing #2 to the following:

  • Dex = 26-31 or 84-89 (depending on what gem option #1 uses in socket)
  • Vit = 0 or -58 (depending on what gem option #1 uses in socket)
  • Life Regen = 161-234
  • Armor = +241-265
  • Melee Dmg Reduction = 5-6%
  • Critical Chance = 7%
  • ---

So in the end, it comes down to EHP (option #1) vs. DPS (option #2).

With that said and budget shopping in mind, I think option #1 is the clear winner for bang for your buck prior to spending billions of gold.

With an unlimited budget though, option #2 is the clear winner since you can easily make up the EHP elsewhere without sacrificing the dps advantage option #2 has over #1.
    ---

edit: I think its important to note part of why option #2 is better in the end. From my calculations using many high end Monk's items as a baseline, 7 CC is almost twice as valuable dps wise compared to 9 IAS. Usually it came down to around 1 CC being worth 3.5-4k dps and 1 IAS being worth about 1.7-2.2k dps.
