Forum moderation, deleting vs locking?

Aside from all the trolling and flaming in General Discussion, every once in a while a topic does come along that somehow holds truth, strikes a nerve or simply champions a nice idea.

While amassing replies and eventually pages, these topics are bound to be trolled, and I realise that it is both the responsibility of moderators to prevent things from running out of hand, as well as a policy for any larger company to be quite restrictive when it comes to forum moderation.

I can't help but wonder, however, how any topic can get deleted after getting more than 15 pages of replies over a perioud of at least half a day. Trolls aside, a lot of people invest their time into writing constructive posts, for no gain other than helping people out, and suggesting ways in which this game can become better, more fun, more balanced or how to extend its longetivity.

Deleting such a lengthy discussion without notice to all the people that posted in it is about the most demotivating thing that can happen on any forum. It completely invalidates the time and effort that the members you should value most put into a discussion, without telling anyone why.

So please, delete or moderate individual posts that are offensive or otherwise against forum policy. Lock topics that ran out of hand, preferably with a message by a moderator stating why. These topics will quickly drop away from the list of active topics, but anything useful will still be available to whomever was interested. Finally, only delete topics as an ultimate measure when all else failed.

Don't take the easy way out. It only shies away those you want to keep in.

some notes:

Summarizing that down, if you are the thread OP and get a temp ban your entire thread whether its 1post or 400 posts is deleted.

If this is true, it's either a serious bug or a terrible forum setting.

One of the topics I'm referring to was this one (though it's now inaccessible):
