[GUIDE] Hand of Ytar Gameplay + Build

I'm back with another guide! If you missed my last guide for a Bola Shot Demon Hunter, you can find it here:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/7592579244

This next guide is the first theme build focusing on the Hand of Ytar rune for Lashing Tail Kick. By stacking spirit regeneration and -LTK items you can adopt a pseudo-ranged playstyle. Very relevant if you're interested in the possible changes available from the PTR. I happen to be using the 4-piece Inna's Bonus for mostly free Sweeping Wind, but you can swap this for Wave of Light if you lack the gear.

Feedback and/or criticism is welcomed and appreciated as always :D

I tried the hand of ytar on PvP and it works amazing especially v.s. DH and WIZ and with the buff on the damage of lashing tail kicks, it almost 1 shots DH and wiz.

Was planning on making a similar build for PvP. Called it the Epic Face Palm or Fist of Heaven (Paladin anyone).

It doesn't work too well, though. Players realize the restrictions of its line of sight really fast and adjust their strategy. I got around it by switching to a faster gear setup: Fist with Sp regen. and a Lidless Wall (comes with -3 LTK Sp cost, +2 Sp regen, AS and possibly dex/CHC/vit/AR/ER). Just trying to land as much hits before they kite out of range. It's fun, but losing becomes boring really quick and then I switch back to my regular PvP build.

An interesting alternative is to swap Sweeping Wind for Dashing Strike. If they start to abuse LoS, leap to them and continue blasting while the slow prevents them from getting too far before you dash again. A solid setup being:

Dashing Strike > SSS > LTK > repeat

Swapping Transcendence for Exalted Soul for the larger spirit pool.

HoY is my chosen pvp build as well! +1

I sincerely doubt it's viable in pve ... but I wouldn't mind trying.

With max -LTK cost gear, HoY has a better dmg% to spirit ratio than Empowered Wave Bells! (in 1.0.7 of course).

-Druin, the happy monk

Edit: who do I credit when I blatantly steal the tag line "Ion Cannon" for this skill btw? That is the most accurate name EVER and I love it!

It's def a lil' slow in PvE, but the PTR changes drastically improve that. I grabbed a LS weapon with the doubled damage and handled MP5 with ease.

I s'pose you could credit me, but I snagged it from my Red Alert days. I'm not really bothered about having credited works. I'm perfectly happy derping my way through D3 ;P

This build is wonky, but I have always been a fan of your vids.

Wonderfully wonky indeed, gotta try this asap. Got some TR gear for spirit regen, might need to look into reduced cost gear, but overall I should be blasting from space in no time :D

It's alsmost a "no generators" build, though I dunno if that is a desireable think per se ...

Is Ion Canon still considered a melee attack? because it seems (from your vid) to refresh and stack SW, which is like totally awesome.

If it's not a melee attack, it's the derpiest ranged attack I've ever seen. . . and yes, it definitely refreshes Sweeping Winds. I'm pretty sure I mention this in the guide, but if I forgot to do so, my bad :S

I don't link my profile because I'm constantly changing gear/builds as I work through upcoming build guides, but I include a static link to my gear here:

http://d3up.com/b/192143

Covers anything you could ever possibly want to know about the items I'm wearing, how they affect the build and the build itself.

Props for effort and videos but your build is far from ideal ;).

Check my profile. I'm pwning MP 5 right now. Going to upgrade belt/wrists then hop and PTR and see if MP 8 or above is cakewalk.

LTK has a ton of potential and I highly recommend not trying the other LTK runes. "Hand of Ytar" has a great proc rate where some of other runes will not proc. Sweeping Wind goes up to 3 stacks just as fast as FoT and I spew Cyclones when playing with the rune though atm Inner Storm is necessary to be able to spam LTK consistently. If I switch to Cyclone rune, there's about 1/3 of a second between LTK attacks with my gear setup. Scorpion Sting is also viable but I'm liking Hand of Ytar better... can see that changing once MP 9/10 is on farm.

EDIT: I've also got an amazing LTK Flying Dragon (-5) with lifesteal if anyone is interested send me a PM - not looking for much.

I think you might have missed a few things in the guide. . .

You have a Daibo with LS (which I don't have):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPbTeFRZz-Y&t=5m38s

I specifically state that when you get Life Steal you can swap Mantra of Healing for Mantra of Conviction which then allows you to swap in Chant of Resonance and/or Exalted Soul.

Your Build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#ZXjgSk!cUb!cbbYYa

The only thing you've done differently is add Air Ally which I specifically don't address because I'm covering it in a separate guide and I don't like the RNG feel of it in this build. With the number of guides I'm going to be releasing, I'm trying to avoid having too many overlapping abilities between guides. I want to have each build focused on a unique concept while you're free to mix and match them as you please.

So thanks for the initial compliment, but I think you should pay more attention to what I actually say in the guide. . . especially considering the preview shows that I'm managing MP 5 as well, it's just slow with my current DPS.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the build and farming successfully with it though :D

Does this weapon work for this build:

http://imgur.com/UIcInzv

DPS: 1134
Dex: 327
LOH: 1,492 (not a mistype)
Crit Dam: 127
Lashing Tail Kick -5

I've had a set of sweet monk drops recently and I'm thinking of levelling up a toon.

I'd use Dishearten, Penitent Flame and Forbidden Palace for a HoY build but that's just me. Use Deadly reach Foresight to hit people outside of the IS. Use Water for more slow, air for spirit regen, or eternal ally because it's fun. Use Beacon of Ytar, guardian's Path and your choice of 1 other passive. Its kind of a keep away/ get away mentality to the build instead of spamming the skill.

Here is the link.

Actually, I have a lifesteal and a 190crit damage Inna's Reach. With reflect damage becoming a "shield", I really think LPSS might be viable. So that then adds even more combinations of gear/skills.

Air Ally is there because there isn't anything better. He off-tanks at times (& light damage) while giving you pretty consistent spirit being you can cast him 99% of the time because of high spirit regeneration. Try it if you haven't... I was surprised how "consistent" the spirit generation is and believe his survivability is buffed in PTR.

My bad if I came off too harsh, just trying to keep the mind open especially with "builds." Nice guides!

BTW, Scorpion Sting is doing pretty well in higher MP from my early testing. Might be switching over from Ytar here soon ;)

That's actually a great item and the attack speed boost will put out some insane burst damage, but you'll want to pick up a generator to use while recovering spirit. Also, with that much LoH, you can dump Transcendence and pick up Chant of Resonance with your choice of Mantras.

I'd use Dishearten, Penitent Flame and Forbidden Palace for a HoY build but that's just me. Use Deadly reach Foresight to hit people outside of the IS. I've been experimenting with Inner Sanctuary to find a comfy fit in a build, so I'll definitely try this out.

No worries, I don't mind "harsh" or "vicious" criticism if it ever comes up so long as it's accurate ;P

Spinning Flame Kick is also fun to use, I'm working it into a future Fire based build :D
