I was thinking about starting up again and just playing hardcore, and the idea that if all items just slowly diminished in quality (not as fast as the current rates by any means), wouldn't that help level off the economy?
Items wouldn't be worth hundreds of millions of gold because they would become disposable, bots would have to constantly buy new GF gear, lots of lower level items would become useful again just because they are plentiful, even though they aren't perfect. Those few uber weapons would still have their place in PVP, but they would become treasures rather than just a BIS for the rest of the game and would truly be coveted.
D3 is a game purely about the gear grind.
If items were to simply detoriate into nothingness with no possibility to repair them, it would completely contradict and destroy said gear grind.
It would be like baking a cake, then leaving it in the oven until it is nothing but a charred lump.
A complete waste of time and resources.
Having less items around would mean that the lower quality items (aka vendor trash) would have inherent worth now, as they would have a place in someones set if they didn't have millions to blow on the auction house replacing their godly gear every few weeks. People would be able to sell items that had only 2 of the 3 trifecta stats rather than vendor them, blues and yellows would be seen as something to actually list on the auction house and not only become a gold sink, but the lower amount of items would help the item sink as well.
