[Guide] The Cookie Cutter. (1.0.7)

"Doubt is pain too lonely, to know that Faith is his twin brother."

TL;DR
================================================
This thread originally was a burial for the old cookie cutter and a reformation to the monk standard build. For those that are unsure about your build options in 1.0.7 to yield maximal results; what to do in order to adapt with the changes, while retaining your need for efficiency, dps, and preserving the old tradition.

The build is contained in the black section after the intro below,
and the video guide, is coming soon.
This is Not a thread to discuss your new experimental builds,
this is the thread to discuss the old and new cookie cutter.

R.I.P to the old Cookie Cutter.
and I hereby restore this thread from inactive status (aka bump)
for the new wave of monks coming in.

The main CC is Ashes to Ashes, the mysterious CC is Dust to Dust,
their power are equal, and although many will play the first one,
you will see the magic of the second when you begin to use it.

The rest of the info below are old since the arrival of 1.0.7,
you may read it for sentimental values.

Old Introduction

Once upon a Spring in Ivgorod,
The world of Monks was changed forever,
when the god of thunder, son of Ytar, angered by the dishonorable monks who abused their gear through the power of Faith Imprint;
abandoned mankind and returned to Nirvahalla,
the Hall of the 1001 gods.

Thus, the old way of the ancients is now forsaken,
and the covenant of ageless wind..
has been broken.

And so we mourn the loss of Faith in the Light snapshot,
in a moment of silence for our fallen brothers,
and giving thanks to the gods and spirits,
as we herald the arrival of the post-apocalyptic patch 1.0.7.

That which brings new changes to the Monk,
most noticeable, are wave of light and sweeping wind.

---------------

With the downfall of Sweeping Wind,
the snapshot technique that we named "Ashes in the Wind" (FiTL + SW)
is now history. (hence its name), rendering the old standard build,
(that which we called "Cyclone Suicide"), obsolete.

And with the great empowerment to Wave of Light's damage, it calls for an official reformation of the standard spec - the build that you know as, The Cookie Cutter.

(in other words, WoL got buffed, snapshot got gimped. So this is how it's gonna be.)

====================================================

`
`
`
`
Now I know many of you still find it hard to let go of Faith in the Light,
as you are hardwired to cast it right before SW. And so to accommodate both purists and idealists, honoring the different gear-range and developments of monks, and to pay homage to the fountain of Build Variety..
The Cookie Cutter is now bisected into 2 versions. ;D

Both specs will utilize Wave of Light - Empowered Wave,
while one uses Serenity, the other has Faith in the Light.
One is armed with Overawe, while the other, wields Backlash.

Behold. ;)

================================================

When you hover the mouse up and down between those 2 links,
you will notice that everything is the same,
except the middle of the 2 builds, looks different. >:D

These 2 builds is like the twins, Ying and Yang, Light and Darkness, Cain and Abel,
Build and... Variety. They go hand in hand,
yet will never get along in your mind, while soloing. >;)

However, they will get along perfectly,
when you party with another monk using the opposite spec! >;p

`

OVERVIEW
it is the same exact build that you all know and loved/hated, with a few changes.
But first, let's give a tribute to the old cookie cutter...

Now onto the Analysis of the newly risen dead.

(put the skills in the exact order as shown here,
please don't be a noob that puts sweeping wind on rightclick.) >:(

Ashes to Ashes

LEFTCLICK : Thunderclap : teleport, double hit, small AOE.
RIGHTCLICK : Empowered Wave : AOE burst damage, knockback, dps breaker.
==================================================================
Button 1 : Mantra of Conviction - Overawe. : 24-48% dps increase to monsters.
Button 2 : Serenity - Ascension : 4 second invulnerability.
Button 3 : Breath of Heaven - Blazing Wrath : increase damage by 15%.
Button 4 : Sweeping Wind - Cyclone : deal 20% damage per stack, critical hits generate some tornados, dealing 26% damage per zap, has increased rate of generation due to Thunderclap's double-hit, etc etc.
==================================================================

Primary Passive Formation

One With Everything
Seize the Initiative
Exalted Soul

- Why Exalted Soul :
because you will be using bells and also spamming Overawe,
so you need an extra 100 spirit pool, and a lil extra regen in order to do that,
or else you can only spam 1 mantra and cast 2 bells before ur O.O.S.
with Exalted Soul, you can cast Overawe, and then drop 5 bells before ur O.O.S >:D

- Why Seize the Initiative :
because this is the cookie cutter.
- Why OWE :
because this is the cookie cutter.

non-OWE traitors' choices :
- The Guardian's Path - A little bit more dodge for the dual wielders will help here. (also more spirit for the 2handers.)
Fleet Footed : good for greedy hustle-rs who want to
get to the next gold pile faster! >:P
Combination Strike : for dps hungry monks who insist on using it with only 1 spirit generator. >:( as if Overawe and bells aren't enough.

(replace OWE with one of those 3 if you don't use OWE)

Dust to Dust

(put the skills in the exact order as shown here,
please don't be anubis that puts sweeping wind on rightclick!!) >:(

LEFTCLICK : Thunderclap
RIGHTCLICK : Empowered Wave
==================================================================
Button 1 : Mantra of Evasion - Backlash. : 15%-30% dodge, dodges proc a fire nova.
Button 2 : Blinding Flash - Faith in the Light.
Button 3 : Breath of Heaven - Blazing Wrath : increase damage by 15%.
Button 4 : Sweeping Wind - Cyclone.

==================================================================
Primary Passive Formation

One With Everything
Seize the Initiative
Resolve

Why Resolve : damage reduction, especially when you don't use Serenity.
Why OWE : because this is the cookie cutter.
Why STI : because this is the cookie cutter.

Optional Passives (in place of OWE for the treacherous, etc.)
- Transcendence : For those that spent Life Per Spirit Use. (:P)
it goes good with the bells.
- Sixth Sense : For those that like to dodge,
a lil extra to go with MoE, for your shielders. (same concept as TGP above)
Pacifism : for those that like to tank,
with this you don't have to move from ice at all,
if you can't dodge it with backlash, when frozen you will literally take no dmg, good for the scaredy cats who can't dodge ice by themselves, even with mantra of evasion! >:D

`
`
--------------------------------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Troll passives (do not use with this spec)
- Beacon of Ytar : almost kinda good for 2 seconds off of Faith in the Light.
for those that need it Bad. >:(
- Guiding Light : legit for party babysitters, and/or altruistic heroes. >;D
- Chant of Resonance : for those that need it Bad, kinda good for the 2 spirit regen..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

`
`
`

And so,
the ancient cookie cutter now is now R.I.P,
Faith in the Light snapshot is righteously buried.
And the legacy of the new cookie cutter continues!

I now return again to the shadows and watch from beyond.
Go find ASCII flowers and put it in this thread! >:)

Interesting. Thanks for posting this -- I've stopped using the traditional cookie cutter about 20-25 paragon levels ago, although used some variant of it for a while. I was thinking of doing something similar to this to start and work other changes to it.

Just a quick question for you, however. I have always paired up TGP with MoE/Backlash as it has always provided great synergy for DW monks -- to have MoE/Backlash without it for DW monks would almost seem like blasphemy! Any particular reason you left that passive off your alternative passives list for your "Dust to Dust" build, yet had it part of your "Ashes to Ashes" build that makes no mention of MoE/Backlash? In fact, I'd even suggest TGP in place of Resolve. Anyway, just wanted to get some thoughts.

Edit: Can't get the flowers to show up properly. ugh. erased.

I look forward to seeing these builds in action, probably by Nameless :p

I'm more of a traditionalist so until theres hard mathematical proof that these WoL builds meet or exceed "old faithful" lol, I'll probably stick with it. Although ideally I would like to use EW while keeping TC, I'll be doing some testing too.

I hafta say though Raahl...its incredibly shocking seeing someone so "enlightened" as yourself, still suggesting people use TC on LMB. I am dissapoint.

Looks interesting, I'll try it out. Messed around with a similar build on the PTR, did fine. Of course, I will run MP 10 so some tweaking maybe necessary. But, it looks good.

The first build is pretty much going to be the new standard. You really don't need exalted soul I have found though, and can swap it out for another passive if you choose.

It comes close to 1.0.6 cookie in dps for me in single target dps. It did not pass it though.

It can beat it out in runs though. Just make sure you're only belling on larger groups and spamming overawe on smaller groups. If you manage your spirit well it is a fun and effective build.

Has anyone toyed around with a build that cuts sw cyclone for bleeding palm? The 50% of a monsters max health explosion seems like it could almost beat out the nados in dps especially if your good at chaining it. It's actually one of my to test things when servers go live I know a few top monk streamers that swear by the skill.

I think the utility is quite different. The big splash for EP happens at the monsters' death, and you still need a means of working down the monster's health in a somewhat efficient manner (otherwise you may end up dying before the monster does). Personally, I think EP is great for group play (using TFIW rune), but SW/Cyclone will likely do better in terms of inflicting consistently high damage over time. I don't think you can ever substitute EP for SW, but it can certainly be played alongside it.

Good post Count, I like the builds and, while I don't want to use them, I think they will probably fit pretty well as the new cookie-cutter specs.

I definitely do wonder if Bells added to the cookie-cutter will actually increase its overall DPS though.

You don't make THAT much more spir/sec with maxed paperdoll DPS gear than you spend with Overawe spam and I am pretty skeptical (because of IAS gear) that Bells could possibly be worth more DPS per 1 point of spirit than Overawe.

We shall see! :D

Was trying out some bells ytd... Good use to hit the mobs. But find it abit hard to get spirit up fast to constantly spam bells (i was using the stun rune) n overawe even with exalted soul. But nevertheless will still try it out n empower wave is a lesser spirit spender.

Omg its 3hrs more till i can unleash my bald holy warrior...

Thanks for taking the time to post this, I got a kick out of it.

It was helpful for me to read through as I'm just coming back to D3 after a long time off and coming back right when this patch is coming out too... completely coincidental I might add! (server is down now as we speak!)

Two main reasons:
1.
Taking infused with light means you can't take Blazing Wrath.
15% damage 100% of the time is a LOT of bonus damage.

2.
When you use Infused with Light, you are making the assumption that you will be doing a lot of auto-attacking. However, when you cast Bell, you can't auto attack. This leads to an awkward situation where you fill your spirit globe to 100% full in several attacks while Infused is up then have to waste the rest of the duration by casting bells.

Because of 1. and 2., it is rarely the case that the extra spirit from IWL can create more damage over time than the 15% damage from Blazing Wrath.

I use the essence burn rune when i do mp0 runs with my frens sometimes when i dont feel like tempest rushing. Its kinda cool when one dies n inflict to the othes n all go kaboom in chain reactions.

N my fren will be like "u monk is a greedy killer, when u dont zip around leaving us with gold to pick up, u will be a time bomb virus" lol.

With the palm skill getting buffed, will try out different runes as well.

Non-OWE monks who want to use the first build should take out Blazing Wrath, put in Foresight, and put Combination Strike in place of OWE. Why use BW and Combi-Strike for 23% when you can use Foresight and Combi-Strike for 34%? Not for the heal, IMO. (Burn an affix on a good globe/potion bonus instead.) Not for the lack of a buff icon, either.

My two cents.
