I find for me its more like how you like to play....Since i play mostly with 1-2 other of my friends i built my WD to suit to work in and to benefit a group play of a Mage and Hunter. I generally use the pets as meat shields and keep mobs distracted and the others in the party do the mass DPS.
It all so comes down to the type of spells you enjoy using and gear to suit your type of play. I am not saying you should make a build like me...but over time i came to have this configuration that complements my style of play.
You will find that the WD is a good all around player...tho i find myself lacking in DPS at times....i do manage fine at inferno power lvl 8
I suggest both of you read the New to Level 60 Section of the Index to Witch Doctor Builds and Guides
And Rainsie - I suggest you start learning how to play solo Witch Doctor before you get to Inferno and get your butt handed to you. Become a better player and let your friends run behind you.
