See if forcing the game into using windowed mode helps either with playing or at least letting you see the error message.
To do that, you can manually edit the D3Prefs.txt file located in your My Documents\Diablo III folder. Use Wordpad or NotePad, just make sure it's saved as a text file afterwards.
Look for a line like this:

Then try the game again and see what happens.
The other thing that causes that is your firewall. Sometimes when you are in full screen you don't see the pop up asking you to authorize it. Going to WIndowed mode can help, as can enabling the program in your firewall.
For me personally, grey is firewall, black is graphics.
