That would be very interesting to see and having a group out there that can hit 65 DE/hr will help motivate our group with a goal to beat.
From my calculations 65 DE/hr would be clearing MP10 VotA in approximately 3:03 with loading times which is pretty impressive feat.
60 min /((65 DE /0.3891 DE/elite)/8.5 elite/VotA) ~ 3.05 min/VotA
No cheating no third party programs that isn´t even allowed by Blizzard itself so it´s out of the question.
Also, picking up the essences is part of the rules of this challenge even though people are being ranked by theoretical average gains, it´s really about how many you should be able to pick up while playing the game. If you don´t pick up essences, then what´s the point of doing the challenge that is about farming essences?

I play mostly on EU...
However, I find a puzzle ring on your barb and the templar does wonders (gives around 2 to 5 gobs per map). Though I don't see a lot of folks using them.
EDIT: They are really cheap for what they do especially since DE farming is a real pain...

@Impreza: I´m really thankful that we now have a DH attempt. Hopefully more will follow your example. Also thanks for trying to motivate you fellow hunters to test their ability (responded to your topic in the DH forums).
Btw. your theoretical average gain with 109 kills is 31.86 (109 * 0.292307565). But if I count the number of packs in each of your run I get 95 + 9 = 30.40 theoretical (104 * 0.292307565).
@Mythicman: I don´t really have any experience with the ring but I´ll give it a try the next time I do some VotA runs.

Uhh... Just a few hours ago, puzzle ring just tripled in price in EU from when I checked half a day ago. Guess news travels fast, I just assumed everybody else thought about it. Lucky at least I bought both my puzzle rings when I got back to D3 a few weeks ago and found out about these Demonic Essences.
EDIT: and now the lowest buyout has quadrupled from a few hours ago. 19m for a puzzle ring is insane.

I play mostly on EU...
I played around with this back in ~April.
In my testing i would only get 1-2 extra goblins over the 1hour run, so i gave my follower more ias instead, to make them proc freeze more often.
This is maybe something i got to test more.. But i think it mostly depend on your running/killing ratio over this hour.. (if you kill elites fast, there is less chance for your follower to get hit -> spawn goblin:)
My scoundrel have a 15% freeze +76% pierce Buriza, and my enchantress have a 13.5 freeze% +15% ias Azurewrath.
They both share a 5% freeze Star of Azkaranth which i swap around on them both, so i have that part covered.

Hehehe... I guess you might be too powerful that even tornadoes kill elites in lower MPs (1st world problems jk). :D
I did make a few adjustments and for DE runs with puzzle rings that (for me at least) helped:
1. I find at 150 - 200k dps elites die just as fast with smash but the whites can take a bit more tornadoes. As long as elite killing time doesn't get affected, any adjustment is okay.
2. Took out cold soj because whites need to be hitting as fast as they could while I tornado through them for the fury boost (most hits come from these). Same goes with anything that causes slow or root.
3. Took out as much Dex out of myself and my follower as I could. Dodge = bad.
4. Templar works best because he always attacks the thickest of the mobs. Though I had to retrain him and take away that stun thing.
5. It is easy to miss gobs especially those that spawned off the Templar. So I had to take special note of that.
Didn't time myself or anything because I usually play in short bursts anyway but I think these adjustments helped. Though gob appearance greatly varies. I could have 2 popping up at once often, or nothing for a while.

No we are using calculated values here... Even if its in a group.
If we were to count real DE drops after 1 hour, the result would be all down to RNG. I myself have gotten 60 DE drops in 1 hour runs a few times..
You need to count the elite packs + goblins and multiply that number with your monsterpower essence drop coefficient.

Its time for me to upload by best run so far, before i start working on my new Uberboss video... (gonna happen this weekend)
First of i would like to say, that i believe this is close to the absolute maximum for what barb can achieve in the "DE per hour" department, without swapping gear...

1. pack & goblin kills: 140
2. actual essence drops: 50 (waited after all packs, and didn't skip a single one)
3. MP9 Vault of the Assassin
4. buffed damage: ~911k dps

6. theoretical average essence gain per hour: 49.516901511 (140 * 0,35369215365)
Total = 130 elites/packs + 10 goblins.
I would like to note, that if i were allowed to submit only a 30mins run (first half), like the "group 55.18 DE run", i would score:
72*2 = 144 over 1 hour (calculated) --> 144* 0,35369215365 = 50.9316701256 DE per hour
The entire 1 hour run, my enchantress were wearing a puzzle ring, and not a single goblin spawned.. :)

On the 30 min test of us in a party the main reason we stop is in those runs we're still looting weapons/jewelery so we end up with full bags. IDing in the middle of the run would definitely slow us down a lot.
I'm still trying to convince Boozor to do a run where he doesn't loot to see if we can actually do a full 1 hour test.
