[Tips] Followers in Inferno: a complete guide

(Sticky)

Sadly, when i wander the forum i see topics where players goes "followers are useless", "my templar does hardly damage", "i don't play with followers"… Those statements are incorrect, therefore those players give away advantages that could have help them in the first place such as AS or crit bonuses… So i've decided to translate my EU topic on followers here.

First of all, do not complain about how much your followers dps is weak regarding yours. They are not weak, they are very powerful. It's just that your character is tremendously strong : that's just the difference between Nephalem and regular humans.
If your followers dies too often, that just mean he's poorly stuffed and there's many way to improve a followers survivability. The Templar and the enchantress for example can easily become immortal even in Inferno PM10.
To equip a followers search in that order : main stat, vita, AS, @res. CC and ChD are very optional. With PM it is more suitable to choose socket on equipment when possible, that gives flexibility to improve damage or LoH, vita or main stat (note : vita is the main stat of the templar).
For their skill, remember that some of them depends on the weapon DPS, so seek high DPS when possible. Some skills don't have cooldown so an only fast skills template is often a good idea.
I have tested all templates described here, prices goes from "very cheap" to "what the hell?". Some item are optional and only serve to max out a specific effect.

Set bonus do not applies to followers.
Follower's buff goes away when he dies, that goes only for passive buffs, equipment bonus stays active (note : a followers never "dies", just goes KO).
MF/GF/%xp/+ptsxp buffs applies to you with a 1/5 ration, they don't fade away even if your followers goes KO.
Follower will appreciate legendaries you thought were crap for you.

Gems and followers

There's a golden rule in inferno : the followers DPS leads to prior LoH on life steal, so Amethyst is always a wise choice on a follower weapon. Sockets give a nice way to set dps/vitality of a follower according PM, the more you go in high PM, the more amethyst comes handy.
The templar loves amethyst, it is useless to use emeralds or ruby with him.
That's a different story for the scoundrel and the enchantress : if LoH is enough on their equipment, around 1000 - 1200, then dps can be obtained with emerald or ruby. That choice depends on skills. Some of them do damage according to the weapon dps so ruby comes here nicely. On the other hand, if your follower gets in ChC, above 10 crit, then the emerald can be used.

Followers and Puzzle Ring : an AH paradox

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/puzzle-ring
Like many items in AH, the most expensive rolls for a Puzzle Ring are dexterity rolls. That is quite funny because best Puzzle Rings for followers are int rolls. I've seen many players use Puzzle Ring dex roll on their scoundrel, with is quite funny. Since dexterity give dodge, they use the Goblin ring on the followers who has the less chance to get often hit... Strength gives armor, intelligence gives @res, wich has to be the first choice to improve a follower survivability! So i guess now you see my point : best Puzzle Ring for a follower is the cheapest on AH.

So... Wich follower must i choose ?

It's a common belief among D3players that a follower would be the most suited for a specific class. Not really a wrong thinking but it's quite inacurate.
There's three way to consider a follower choice :
- bonuses point of view : depend on your build to compensate a lack of characteristic (then your choice is as+armor, chc or extra damage, resource regeneration and heal). Or the parangon farming need : MF/GF/XP.
- skill point of view : passive combination, cc in order to complete your gameplay.
- field point of view : enchantress for corridors and enclosed spaces, scoundrel for opened fields, and templar for bosses/single target fights.
In my opinion, the best way to use follower at your avantage is to use all 3 of them according to the situation.

Thanks for reading. I still have some template in my sleeve, but they still need some improvement.
Some of the templates described here can be seen on my followers :

Very, very good guide. I'm still working on my followers, I gear most of them for survivability first and then try to improve them somewhat as you've outlined. This is a very useful guide, thanks for making it.

Good guide. I got my templar for MF and Scoundrel for crowd control. Even 30k dps is negligible on MP10 so I much rather equip him with survivability.

I disagree : 30k is nearly 10% of your dps, on PM10 it can make your fights 10% shorter ! But that would cost a lot, 20k on scoundrel is more reasonable. But since you play barb, i strongly suggest that you try the immortal build of the enchantress in Inferno PM10, you may be very surprised by its efficiency.

I disagree. My Scoundrel does very little dmg but keeping thrash/elites frozen is much more beneficial to me then 20k dps.

For the enchantress, I'm trying to make a "Dominatrix." (Controller w/Freeze and damage spells--a charmer and dealer of PAIN :D )

Skills: Forceful Push, Erosion, Powered Armor, Mass Control

Token: at least 200 INT with high VIT, CD%, some resists, and LOH

Weapon: a decent Freeze Tormentor (to add Charm AND Freeze chance to all of her attacks)

Ammy: Star of Azkaranth (Freeze)...aim for at least 8.5% total (between the weap and
ammy)...but 10.2% is max.

Rings: INT+VIT, CC (10-12%), CD (more is better), LOH/Life regen, extra damage/all resists are good too :)

*This build can hit fairly hard with strong damage and has good chance to crowd control with every attack. Forceful Push and Erosion are also able to "mass charm" or freeze groups at a time, so they become damage AND crowd control attacks. Mass Control is a great way for the little lady to render elites helpless for another 10 secs/min even if they aren't frozen or charmed.

Mine has all of the above gear except for a Freeze ammy (couldn't afford one so I got a high % Chill one instead). She still does a great job for me :)

I like using my Templar with:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/follower#0100
Weapon:
Wizard Spike:
Damage doesn't matter get 35% Ice Orb, 11% IAS

Offhand:
Lidless Wall:
Dext/Vitality and 5+% IAS

Ammy:
Whatever one you can get
Dext/Vit, LoH, LPS, 5+% IAS

Ring 1:
Hellfire Ring:
Dext/Vit, 5+% IAS

Ring 2:
Band of Hollow Whispers/Bul-Katho's:
5+% IAS

Basically I'm going for high Dodge %, 2.0+ ApS, 1000+ LoH, 1000+ LpS and Proc Items. Wizardspike's frozen orb does decent AoE and slowing, Hellfire's fireball works similar. Band of hollow whispers does decent damage vs single targets but BK's can provide a little bit of constant AoE and life regen through the drain effect. Lidless wall adds nice IAS and the shield keeps him alive providing him a chance to replenish life while taking no damage briefly.

The damage can be out classed by other Followers but I like the Templar's passives

For the damage bonus vs elites on your follower, do they apply to your main character? like mf and gf?

No, they do not apply. Same for bonuses against human/beast/demons etc...

You should use all 3 of them. (At least 2, your nice DH lacks just a little armor, to me an enchantress build would be more appropriate). But if you want hate bonus to spam rapid fire longer in high PM, Templar it is.

Without hesitation, the best Temlpar build is :
Speed of Knight (Max AS 55%, APS 2,21)
Follower token with vita and 900 LoH
Azurewrath http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/azurewrath with 21% AS
Blackthornes Duncraig Cross http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/blackthornes-duncraig-cross with 9% AS and 500 LoH
Band of hollow whispers http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/band-of-hollow-whispers with 9% AS
rare ring with 9% AS and 400 LoH (2 of them if cannot afford a BoHW with AS)
Lidless wall with 7% AS) http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/lidless-wall
Aiming for 2,21 APS and 2k LoH, this template is amazing : the best i've seen so far. The most efficient use of the templar against bosses and other single target situation : Ubers, and suprisingly, gobs.

(Note that in PM10, the Lidless wall won't do the trick, you need to switch for a Stormshield with max block chance and max vita). Band of hollow whispers http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/band-of-hollow-whispers with 9% AS is required.)
(Mine is 2,15 aps 14,3% freeze, 47% block, 20% dex, 200@res, 62k pv, 2k loh. Extra damage from ring and necklace are great and he never dies. He's the only way for me to kill gobs in PM10).

Most of barbarian use enchantress for her AS/armor buff. You can use either a Maximus or an Immortal in higher PM, but every other template are great. (Check my new template on my Monk's Enchantress (no updated yet in the thread)). Note that in order to be efficient in PM10, a viable Maximus build will be very expensive in regard of a standard immortal build. (I got lucky and i feel sorry for the player who sold me my Maximus for 15M ^^ !)

Yes, I want that hate regen, I'm doing fine on mp10 and i can face tank with out much problem, only some nasty packs then I have to resort to kiting :)

I bought an Azurewrath sword yesterday and I put an ammy I got with 5% stun. tell me what's your opinion on my Templar, I dont have LOH currently, but i'll look out for deals later on. Oh, thanks for writing this guide OP :)

@AshTag,

thanks for coming here and posting this great guide.

I just finished building my Scoundrel. He rarely dies and Freezes my surroundings at a good rate.

I put as a general Scoundrel build...is that he needs over 2k Loh, 4 slots of AR, over 45k Hp, and +-1k Life Regen.

I used The Star of Azkaranth but the extra Freeze % didn't help him stay a live in heavy dmg areas. And if he's dying often then it's no use no matter how much Freeze percentage he has.

So focused on getting a solid Buriza-do kyanon and the rest was survivability. I didn't worry about adding any dmg stats. All i focused was on his survivability and AS.

total cost on Scoundrel gear, 140m.

thanks again bunches for all this good info ;)

Your templar is quite nice, but if your objective is to farm PM10, change your ammy! Star of Azkaranth is quite nice for cc, but in PM10 it's a little weak. The best for a follower in PM10 is a Blackthorn ammy : by default it has LoH, %life and AS. AS will help for the Buriza proc. If you want to add cc, there's a funny fact : chance to blind can roll on every ammy! So seek for one with as, lot, %life, vita/@res and blind chance. (Blackthorn's can roll blind chance too but it's quite expensive!)
